Farish Jenkins, Fossils Expert, Dies at 72

Farish Jenkins, a paleontologist who discovered fossils of animals evolving into something new ? most notably a 375-million-year-old fossilized fish with skull, neck, ribs and part of the fins that resembled the earliest mammals ? died on Nov. 11 in Boston. He was 72.

The cause was complications of pneumonia, said his daughter-in-law, Susan Jenkins. She said he had multiple myeloma, a cancer of plasma cells.

Darwin said proof of his evolutionary theories would be found in fossils, and Dr. Jenkins used them to show life-forms changing into other forms, so-called missing links. His fish, for example, had body parts that were clearly morphing into those of land animals. Similarly, he built on existing knowledge that a group of reptiles were ancestors of mammals with fossil evidence to show how this happened: the reptilian jaw morphed into part of a mammalian inner ear.

He worked in the laboratory as well as on field digs from Arizona to Africa to the Arctic. As part of his vast exploration of how animals walk, trot, gallop and otherwise get about, he studied X-ray movies of starlings in flight. He learned that a bird?s wishbone functions as a spring.

?This is well known to everybody in the world,? he said after his finding appeared in the journal Science. ?It?s only scientists who discover the obvious.?

Dry wit was only part of his personality. He delighted his Harvard students with his ?Moby-Dick? lecture, in which he impersonated Captain Ahab stomping around on a peg leg to demonstrate human locomotion. He used sharpened colored chalk to draw intricate anatomical illustrations. When digging for fossils near the North Pole, he wore his trademark Czechoslovak rabbit-fur hat, and carried a flask of vodka for warmth and a rifle for warding off polar bears. Back home, he favored suits with vests, tiepins and a pocket watch.

?He cut a seriously dashing figure,? said Neil Shubin, a University of Chicago paleontologist who worked closely with Dr. Jenkins.

Dr. Jenkins?s most heralded find was the fossil fish that he and two other paleontologists, Dr. Shubin and Edward B. Daeschler of the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia, announced in 2006 in the journal Nature. It was the product of extreme paleontology: the team made four trips over six years to a site on Ellesmere Island, 887 miles from the North Pole, subsisting mainly on chocolate bars. Fiendish weather limited excavation to only one month a year, July. Even though the nature and age of the exposed rocks seemed propitious for finding fossils, they had almost given up when they made their big find.

The trove of fossils they unearthed enabled them to recreate a crocodile-like animal. What it showed was an organism, guided by genes, rearranging itself.

With fish characteristics like scales and fins still evident, new features like a neck appeared: it would have allowed a ground-rooted creature to swivel its head to snare prey. The skull?s shape had features that resembled fish, and others that resembled later land animals. Most intriguing, the fins had an elbow joint and the beginnings of wrists that would have allowed the animal to lift itself out of shallow water. It had both gills and lungs.

?This really is what our ancestors looked like when they began to leave the water,? the zoologist Jennifer A. Clack of the University of Cambridge and the biologist Per Erik Ahlberg of the University of Uppsala in Sweden wrote in an accompanying editorial in Nature.

H. Richard Lane of the National Science Foundation said, ?Human comprehension of the history of life on Earth is taking a major leap forward.?

Dr. Jenkins located remains of many of Earth?s oldest creatures. Among them was a tiny shrewlike animal he found in Arizona?s Painted Desert in 1981. It represented a newly discovered family of warm-blooded creatures. Around the same time, he found a turtle and frog that were then among the oldest ever identified.

He gladly left human evolution for others. ?It?s not a field for gentlemen,? he said. ?Those anthropologists are savage.?

The eldest of three sons of a marketing executive, Farish Alston Jenkins Jr. was born in Manhattan on May 19, 1940. He graduated from Princeton with a major in geology and earned a master?s degree and a Ph.D. from Yale, where he was the first graduate student allowed to take anatomy courses in the medical school. He taught at Columbia before moving to Harvard in 1971.

Dr. Jenkins is survived by his wife, the former Eleanor Bristol Tracy; his son, Henry Edgar Jenkins III; his daughter, Katherine Temperance Jenkins Leeds; his brother, Henry Edgar Jenkins II; and two granddaughters.

In 2010, scientists found fossil footprints in a quarry in Poland 25 million years older than Dr. Jenkins?s find. Creationists said these proved that the ancient fish Dr. Jenkins had found could not have been a missing link, since creatures into which they supposedly evolved were already long extant. Dr. Shubin responded that the prints had no fingers or toes, and in any case were inconclusive without a skeleton. He and Dr. Jenkins planned another Arctic trip to find even older bones.

Dr. Jenkins, who Dr. Shubin said loved expeditions more than anything but was debilitated by cancer, did not make the trip. He had told friends that he, as a paleontologist, felt at peace with his mortality, The Economist magazine reported. ?I?m familiar with extinction,? he said.

Casper Police Chief Chris Walsh answers questions during a news conference, Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012, detailing Friday's killings at Casper College and Hawthorne Avenue. Walsh said Saturday that 25-year-old Christopher Krumm, of Vernon, Conn., first stabbed 42-year-old Heidi Arnold about two miles southwest of Casper College on Friday morning. Krumm then went to the college and shot his father, 56-year-old computer science instructor James Krumm, in the head with the bow-and-arrow in front of a group of students before stabbing himself with a large knife. Walsh says the younger Krumm smuggled the weapon into the classroom under a blanket. (AP Photo/The Casper Star-Tribune, Alan Rogers) MANDATORY CREDIT; TRIB.COM

(AP) ? Gravely wounded by an arrow fired into his head, a Wyoming college instructor still managed to wrestle with his 25-year-old son who carried out the attack and give his students time to flee the classroom, say police who hailed the actions as heroic.

More grisly details of the horrific murder-suicide in Wyoming came to light Saturday, a day after the younger man killed his father's live-in girlfriend and then barged into his father's computer science class and shot him in the head with a high-powered bow and arrow.

As James Krumm, 56, then fought with son Christopher Krumm of Vernon, Conn., during Friday's attack, the handful of students in the Casper College classroom escaped.

Christopher Krumm had just stabbed to death 42-year-old Heidi Arnold at the home she shared with James Krumm two miles away.

When police arrived at the classroom, they found Christopher Krumm bleeding from self-inflicted knife wounds and taking his last breaths.

James Krumm was dead, Casper Police Chief Chris Walsh said.

"I can tell you the courage that was demonstrated by Mr. Krumm was absolutely without equal," he said, adding that the instructor's actions could offer some measure of comfort to those affected by the killings.

Authorities believe "around six" students were in the classroom when Christopher Krumm entered, Casper police spokesman Justin Smith said. No students were hurt.

Walsh said police still were trying to figure out what motivated Christopher Krumm to attack his father and Arnold, a math instructor at the college. Arnold died of multiple stab wounds.

After shooting his father with the arrow, Christopher Krumm stabbed himself, then fatally stabbed his father in the chest in a struggle in the classroom, Walsh said.

Police began getting reports about the attack on Arnold soon after they responded by the dozen to the campus attack. Authorities locked down the campus for two hours while they scoured the grounds for any other attackers. They were reassured that Christopher Krumm acted alone.

He had smuggled the compound bow ? a type much more powerful and effective for hunting than a simple, wooden bow ? onto campus beneath a blanket, Walsh said.

He said Christopher Krumm also had two knives with him, and the knife used was "very large."

Arnold's body was found in the gutter of her street, and evidence suggested much of the attack occurred outside the home, Walsh said.

Neighbor Heather Meier said she came home from work Friday afternoon after picking up her 7-year-old daughter from school, and the two saw Arnold's body still lying in the street.

"As soon as we got home, we just shut the curtains," she said Saturday. "You know, tried to just watch some TV, have some snacks, mind our own business."

Across the street from her home, crime tape cordoned off Krumm and Arnold's faded blue and yellow house and part of the street. Meier, who has lived in the neighborhood for two years, said she met Arnold and James Krumm only once a few months ago and described them as quiet and very private.

Casper College instructor Kevin McDermott said Arnold and James Krumm were well-liked on campus.

"I knew these people pretty well, so it's hurting me. ... It's breaking my heart," said McDermott, who teachers algebra and computer networking at the school. "They were really good, kind-hearted people. People like Jim and Heidi are what make Casper College such a great college."

McDermott described James Krumm as a "real kind and gentle-mannered guy" who was well-respected by his students.

"Computer science majors took most of their classes from Jim. He was their adviser, and he had a big impact on them," he said.

McDermott added Arnold was a great teacher who "taught the tough stuff" and maintained a sunny disposition ? "a person who always had a smile on her face."

Chris Unruh, a student in one of Arnold's pre-calculus classes this fall, said she was a kind instructor who was excited about recently getting two dogs.

"She cared about her students," said Unruh, 18. "She wanted all of them to succeed."

Investigators said Christopher Krumm had recently driven to Casper from Connecticut and had been staying at a local hotel. He had no significant history of encounters with police.

Authorities were uncertain what went awry in his relationship with his father.

"It's difficult to say. I don't think it was very close," Walsh said.

In Vernon, Conn., police Sgt. Timothy O'Connor said officers executed a search warrant at Christopher Krumm's last known address Friday to help authorities in Casper. He didn't know what investigators were looking for or may have found at the home.

"Whatever was recovered will be turned over to Wyoming because it is an active investigation," O'Connor said.

Christopher Krumm's previous addresses include one in the western Massachusetts city of Springfield and others in the Colorado cities of Golden, Fort Collins and Lakewood.

Casper, population 56,000, is about 250 miles northwest of Denver and Wyoming's second-largest city after the state capital, Cheyenne. Wyomingites refer to Casper as the "Oil City" because it is a hub of the state's oil industry.

Casper College is one of seven colleges in Wyoming's community college system. The campus was mostly quiet Saturday morning. Fathers and sons shot hoops in the school gym. A small group of drama students rehearsed a play in the school theater just across the street from the attack.

The building where the attack happened remained cordoned off by police tape that whipped in a brisk wind. A security guard let students back in, one at a time, to retrieve belongings they'd left behind.

Andra Charter, a 20-year-old sophomore, emerged with a coffee mug. She recalled hearing screams outside her biology class before getting word about what had happened.

"As we were walking out, there was a girl screaming, 'There's somebody stabbing Mr. Krumm!'" Charter said.

James Krumm was head of the college's computer science department. He was born north of London and also spent part of his childhood in Germany, according to the college website.

He held degrees from Casper College, a bachelor's degree and MBA from the University of Wyoming and a master's in computer science from Colorado State University.

Arnold held a master's degree in mathematics from the University of Oregon and a bachelor's degree in math from University of California Davis.

The college planned a candlelight vigil and memorial service Tuesday.

7 Ways to Rebuild Your Credit after Bankruptcy - Doable Finance

Fri Nov 30, 2012, 2:00 am |

One of the primary concerns many people have when considering bankruptcy is how they will rebuild their credit once they file. Many are concerned that it will be years before they can apply for credit again or before they can buy a new car or a house.

However, many people find that their credit actually improves soon after filing for bankruptcy as a result of clearing out high levels of unsecured debts like credit cards and lowering their debt-to-income ratio.

Even if your credit takes a hit after bankruptcy, there are a number of ways you can rebuild your credit and get back on the road to financial recovery.

Here are 7 ways you can rebuild your credit after bankruptcy:

  1. Create a Realistic Budget

Learning to live within your means is an important part of restoring financial health and building up credit. Start by creating a realistic monthly budget with all of your expected expenses and all of your expected income.

Don?t just estimate in creating your expenses. Go back and look at what you have done in the past so you can see all of the different types of expenses you have. Figure out how much income you have left over each month and don?t spend more than that.

If you can manage to stick with your budget, you?ll be able to pay all your bills, maybe save a little money for an emergency, and avoid running up debts through credit cards and loans.

  2. Pay All Bills on Time

Payment history has a significant impact on your credit score. If you miss payments or make late payments, that will bring down your score. In fact, many people who file for bankruptcy were struggling with these negative marks before they filed because their debt became unmanageable and they were unable to pay their bills.

Paying all of your bills on time each month will have a significant impact on your credit score, helping you to raise it steadily over time.

  3. Open a Savings Account

Putting aside whatever savings you can will benefit you in two ways. First, it will ensure that you have an emergency fund established so that you do not have to rely on credit if you lose your job or have to make a major repair on your car. Second, any savings you have will show creditors that you are taking responsible steps with your finances and will serve as security for a line of credit.

Even if you only save a little each week or each month, putting aside what you can into your savings will help your finances and your credit.

  4. Apply for a Gas or Store Credit Card

After you file bankruptcy, the chances of getting approved for a major credit card are usually not good. However, smaller retail cards like those for gas stations or department stores are usually more accessible as they have lower limits.

If you are able to be approved for one of these cards, you can use it to make small charges then pay back your balance each month to establish a new credit history. Just be sure to keep your balance low and to stay in your budget to ensure that your debts remain manageable.

It is not a good idea, however, to try and get a gas card for each gas station or a store card for every store to which you go. Pick one store and/or one gas station to start with and work on managing those accounts. If you apply for too many individual store cards, this will ultimately hurt your credit.

  5. Apply for a Secured Credit Card

Many credit cards are unsecured, meaning that there is no collateral to seize if you default. In other words, if you don?t pay your bills, your creditors usually have no recourse to claim property or other assets to pay what you owe. This is why you need a good credit score to show your trustworthiness to pay your debts on these cards.

After bankruptcy, it may be difficult to obtain a traditional unsecured card from a major bank. However, you may be able to get a secured card. A secured credit card is issued for an amount that matches the amount of a deposit you have made with the bank. For example, if you have $500 in savings, you may be eligible for a $500 credit limit on a secured card. Then, if you default, your savings can be taken to pay the debt.

A secured credit card is often seen as a low-risk option for banks, and they can help you to rebuild your credit by establishing a new payment history.

  6. Avoid Running Up Debts

Using some credit is a good way to re-establish payment history and credit. However, you should be careful to avoid running up a lot of debt. You may find yourself on a slippery slope that leads to more and more reliance on credit to pay bills or buy the things you need, which can lead to unmanageable debt.

Also, running up high debts will increase your debt-to-income ratio, which will hurt your credit score and make it difficult for you to get approved for new credit such as a car or home loan.

  7. Monitor Credit Reports

Mistakes happen. However, when they happen on your credit report, they can damage your score and make it hard for you to get the credit you need. Make sure that mistakes aren?t hurting you by monitoring your credit reports regularly. If you spot mistakes, report them immediately to the credit bureaus to have them corrected or removed.

You can get a free copy of your credit report each year. However, there are also many low-cost credit-monitoring services that can allow you to access your report at any time and even notify you when any changes are made to your report.

Rebuilding your credit after bankruptcy may seem like a daunting task, but following these steps will help you get back on the road to recovery. Be sure to meet with a qualified financial advisor for tailored feedback for your personal circumstances.

Powerball prize-sharing joke hits 1M shares on Facebook

3 hrs.

A joke?Facebook post by a man claiming to have a winning Powerball lottery ticket has been shared 1 million times just in the 24 hours since it was posted.

Nolan Daniels?posted an image of himself on the social network?holding a Powerball ticket?Thursday evening. He claimed it was a winning ticket and that if his friends shared the photo, he would give a million dollars to one of them at random. As the post was made public (and remains so as of this writing), it went viral, spreading from Facebook to blogs and various websites.

Even a cursory examination of the photo shows it to be the crudest of manipulations, with the telltale signs of simple copying and pasting to make the numbers appear to be a winning permutation. And those familiar with the rules may also have noticed that the numbers are not printed in numerical order, as they would be on a real ticket.

Despite the ruse being?glaringly obvious, the photo???and some folks'?hopes for a cut of the dough???has spread like wildfire. NBC News has contacted Daniels for comment, and will update this post if we hear back from him.

India growth stuck at 3-year low as reforms stall

MUMBAI, India (AP) ? India's economic growth slid to 5.3 percent in the September quarter, stuck at its lowest levels in three years as New Delhi struggles to enact reforms to kick start Asia's third-largest economy.

The number released Friday by the government was in line with expectations that the second quarter of the fiscal year was lackluster. A weakening economy complicates New Delhi's effort to create jobs for its exploding youth population and balance the budget, while paying for costly social programs in advance of national elections scheduled for 2014.

India is struggling with high inflation and high interest rates, coupled with a wide fiscal deficit, weak currency, and uncertain policy environment, which have hit both consumption and investment.

"The country is marred by the investment slowdown," said Madhavi Arora, an economist at Kotak Mahindra Bank. "The investment story has not improved in the last two and a half years. It is worsening each and every quarter."

She said she expects growth for the fiscal year ending March to be 5.6 percent. That would be the country's worst annual performance since 2003, according to FactSet.

New Delhi has been at pains to attract foreign capital and avoid a ratings downgrade, announcing ambitious reforms that are now foundering in Parliament. The ruling Congress Party's headline effort to ease restrictions on foreign investment and allow companies like Wal-Mart to open supermarkets here sparked fierce resistance from opposition politicians, who shut down Parliament over the issue, casting further doubt on the government's ability to execute policy reforms.

While New Delhi's initiative on reform has boosted the stock market, economists are divided over how much the policy overhaul will help the real economy in the near term. Even if New Delhi manages to push through liberalization measures it's not clear whether foreign investors will take advantage of greater access to industries such as aviation, retail and insurance given India's other looming uncertainties.

"All these so-called reforms are more of a euphoria driven thing rather than an actual impact on the economy," Arora said.

India's economy grew 5.5 percent during the June quarter, after expanding by 5.3 percent in the March quarter. This is the slowest pace since the global recession, which dragged India's economic growth down to 3.5 percent for the January to March quarter of 2009.
