UPSTART TABLET VENDOR Microsoft has slashed the price of the Surface RT by 30 percent, with the tablet now priced from ?279 instead of ?399.
Probably to make way for a refreshed Surface RT device tipped to be on its way soon, the 32GB Surface RT now costs ?120 less than Apple's 16GB iPad with Retina display, with double the storage, and just ?10 more than an iPad Mini.
The larger 64GB model has also seen ?120 slashed off its retail price and is now priced at ?359 instead of ?479.
However, adding a black Touch Cover costs an extra ?80, so customers thinking of buying the Surface RT for professional use might not see the sale as much of a bargain.
While the Surface RT is a significantly cheaper, the Surface Pro model remains priced at ?719 and ?799 for the 64GB and 128GB models, respectively.
The reduced 32GB and 64GB Microsoft Surface RT tablets can be bought at retailers Currys, PC World, and John Lewis.
A presentation slide shown at the firm's Worldwide Partner Conference in Texas last week revealed that the Redmond firm is planning to launch refreshed Surface RT and Surface Pro devices within the next year.
Entitled "FY2014 Biggest Innovation Year Ever!", the slide outlined the firm's plans for the rest of 2013 and into 2014, including an "Update to Surface RT" and an "Update to Surface Pro" along with other plans such as new Windows 8.1 devices and a focus on Xbox One, Kinect and Skype.
The drop in price points for the Surface RT hints that Microsoft is looking to make some room for refreshed models in the latter half of the year.
Rumoured to be called the Surface RT 2, Microsoft's upcoming tablet update supposedly will also support LTE 4G connectivity as Microsoft looks to add mobile internet capability to its not so popular tablet lineup. ?
