Getting Real With +Shadra Bruce, Owner of +MomsGetReal
From choosing products that aren?t tested on animals to finding healthy foods that don?t contain poisons, to making social-political decisions to avoid stores like Walmart as much as possible, it can be very tough to find products worthy of having in my house.
While I?m more than happy to use homemade beauty products when I can, I have discovered a few commercial products worth trying:
BWC Lotion. BWC stands for Beauty without Cruelty. The lotion is made without any animal products and the company does not perform any animal testing. It?s also fragrance free. What I love about the lotion is that it works quickly, leave no greasy residue, and comes in a small two-ounce bottle I can keep in my purse (perfect for uber cold New York winters that dry my skin).
If you need an all-over body lotion to help repair your skin but you don?t want to worry about unhealthy chemicals found in many of the treatments, consider Andalou Naturals. Their lotions infuse aromatherapy with plant stem cell technology for a spa-like treatment that nurtures your skin and your soul. It comes in my favorite relaxation aroma combo: lavender and thyme. Try it on your hands, elbows, knees and feet?wonderful!
For whiter, brighter teeth, I?ve discovered a fabulous whitening gum from Vitacare. This gum is minty fresh, all natural, and infused with xylitol, Vitamins A, C, D, and E as well as calcium and magnesium. My favorite flavor is the cool mint freshness + key lime. I wasn?t sure I would like it, but the tartness of the lime was a real complement to the mint. When you can?t brush between meals, this is a great option.
If you have special dietary needs, whether vegan, gluten-free, or you?re just trying to make healthier choices, Earnest Eats has an entire line of healthy products that are vegan and gluten-free, made with natural ingredients (no high fructose corn syrup or trans fats). To look at the Earnest Eats foods, like the Whole Food Bar Dark Choco Espresso bar I tried, you might worry about texture, flavor, or consistency?but it was actually really, really, delicious ? as soft and moist as a brownie, but guilt-free.
Finally, if you are looking for a start to your morning that will give you the energy you need to get through the day without your stomach growling for more food right away, you have to try TeeChia high performance superseeds cereal. They offer two flavors: blueberry date or almond cinnamon. This cereal contains chia, flax, quinoa, amaranth, ramon and pumpkin seeds and is gluten-free. The texture is surprisingly smooth for the amount of fiber in the cereal, and the flavor is perfect ? just enough fruit to add some sweet while not overpowering the rich nutty flavor of the seeds. This is the kind of cereal that sticks with you through the day so you don?t eat that tempting donut at the office.
Healthy foods and conscious products are out there ? you just have to get away from the box stores to find the good stuff. Luckily, all of these items are available at Vitacost.com, where you can get free shipping on all orders over $49. They are one of my favorite places to shop!
