Total Student Loan Debt Reaches the Frightening $1 Trillion Mark ...

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau announced this week that the amount Americans owe on student loans is far higher than previously thought, and U.S. officials warned that high levels of debt could lead to more home foreclosures for struggling homeowners.

The total amount of student debt apparently passed the $1 trillion mark late in 2011, according to a report from the Wall Street Journal.

This estimate of student loan debt, provided by the newly minted Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, offered a figure that was 16 percent higher than the estimate given by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York Last Year.

Student Loan Debt Reaches Staggering Heights

The Wall Street Journal recently provided several interesting pieces of information about what some are calling a looming student loan debt crisis:

• Survey method. In finding that total student loan debt had reached $1 trillion, the bureau surveyed a broad range of private lenders, which it claims offers better information than simply relying on consumer credit reports.
• Reasons for rising debt. Officials from the bureau said that student loan debt is rising for a number of different reasons, including an increase in the number of Americans going to college in the shadow of a weak labor market. But the most important reason for the high level of debt may be rising tuition costs, which have been increasing dramatically in the wake of state funding cuts for education.
• Is college worth it? Many economists say that college continues to be a good investment because of the large gap in pay between college graduates and people who did not attend college. In response to rising levels of debt, some experts suggest that students look for cheaper, in-state schools and seek scholarship aid.

Sources indicate that, as more people take out massive loans for education, they may delay making home purchases, which could further weaken the housing market and place considerable strain on the fragile economy.

Student Loan Debt in Bankruptcy

In order to discharge student loan debt in bankruptcy, filers must prove that they would suffer undue hardship if forced to repay their debts. Such hardship is difficult to prove in bankruptcy court, but not impossible.

(KTVI) ? More than half of all cancer is preventable, and according to Washington University public health researchers at the Siteman Cancer Center, society has the knowledge to act on that information today.

Dr. Sarah Gehlert spoke with us about the obstacles standing in the way of preventing the disease.

WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY STUDY:

Lifestyle choices people make and society can influence in a number of ways ? from tobacco use to diet and exercise ? play a significant role in causing cancer. Specifically, the researchers cite data demonstrating that smoking alone is responsible for a third of all cancer cases in the United States. Excess body weight and obesity account for another 20 percent.

But beyond individual habits, they argue that the structure of society itself ? from medical research funding to building design and food subsidies ? influences the extent of the cancer burden and can be changed to reduce it.

The obstacles they see to implementing broad cancer prevention strategies are:

?Skepticism that cancer can be prevented. Smoking rates in different states demonstrate that 75 percent of lung cancer in the United States could be prevented with elimination of cigarette smoking.

?The short-term focus of cancer research. Benefits of prevention may be underestimated because they take decades to show up, and research funding often spans five years or less.

?Intervening too late in life to prevent cancer. Strategies like vaccination against cancer-causing viruses, such as the human papilloma virus that causes cervical cancer, work best when begun early, in this case before young people begin sexual activity.

?Research focuses on treatment, not prevention. Treatments focus only on a single organ after diagnosis but behavioral changes reduce cancer and death rates from many chronic diseases.

?Debate among scientists. They say health experts have a moral responsibility to highlight cancer risk factors even without knowing the biological mechanism by which they cause cancer.

?Societal factors that affect health. Tobacco policy and government subsidies don`t do enough to discourage unhealthy behavior, and in some cases they make the unhealthy options more accessible, especially in low-income communities.

?Lack of collaboration across disciplines. Scientists and health experts must work together to learn what causes cancer, communicate that to the public and work with community leaders to implement policies that help people lead healthier lives, they say.

?The complexity of implementing broad changes. With so many players involved, from health-care providers to government regulators to individuals, it will be difficult to implement broad change over the long term.

Two years ago, I loudly supported the idea that sudden-death overtime places too much emphasis on the coin flip.

And so the adjustment of the postseason overtime rule was a welcome change, even though I still think that, in a playoff game, the team that kicks off should have a chance to match a touchdown scored by the team that has the first possession.

That said, I?m not sure that the elimination of sudden death is the best way to deal with overtime in a regular-season game.

It will make the regular-season games longer, by extending any game in which the team that receives the opening kickoff scores a field goal on the first drive.? Longer games aren?t necessarily an issue in the postseason, since the gap between the starting times is a full 3.5 hours.? In the regular season, it means that some early games will stretch too far into the 4:15 p.m. ET contests and, even worse, that some late-afternoon games will infringe on too much of NBC?s Football Night in America.

Also, longer regular-season games result in more opportunities for player injuries.

Also, there will be more ties, which can wreak havoc on the standings and the playoff possibilities.

Then there?s the fact that last season?s adjustment in the kickoff point, from the 30 to the 35, makes it less likely that the team that wins the coin toss will return the kick to the 40, string together a couple first downs, and win the game on a 50-yard field goal.

Economists see higher taxes as way to cut - Financial News

NEW YORK (AP) ? Economists say a combination of higher taxes and lower spending is the best path to reduce the federal budget deficit.

A survey on national policies conducted by the National Association for Business Economists released Monday also forecast that short-term interest rates will remain at current levels for at least 12 more months.

The economists say the Federal Reserve should not buy more bonds to stimulate the economy as it has in the last few years, although the policy has been effective. With the economic recovery strengthening, the economists say the Fed doesn't need to buy more bonds this year.

The Fed began buying Treasury bonds during the recession that followed the 2008 financial crisis to try to lower long-term interest rates and jump-start the economy.

Multiple-adult families and committed intimate networks have the potential of providing dependent children with additional nurturing adults who can meet their material, intellectual, and emotional needs. While parents may end up focusing less attention on their children, children may gain new aunts, uncles, and adopted parents.

More adults sharing parenting can mean less stress and less burnout without losing any of the rewards. In a larger group of men and women, it's more likely that one or two adults will be willing and able to stay home and care for the family or that each could be available one or two days a week. If one parent dies or becomes disabled, other family members can fill the gap. It's possible for children to have more role models, more playmates, and more love in a group environment. Of course, these advantages can be found in any community setting, but people sometimes avoid intimacy with other adults in a conscious or unconscious effort to safeguard a monogamous commitment.

While there no guarantees that polyamorous families, monogamous nuclear families, step families, extended families, or any other kind of family will create stable and nurturing environments where children can develop in an atmosphere of love and security, there are reasons to think that polyamory may be at least as good as the other options for raising healthy children. LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Erika Van Pelt didn't cut it on "American Idol."

The 26-year-old disc jockey from South Kingstown, R.I., who dramatically chopped off her hair before Wednesday's evening of Billy Joel tunes, was eliminated from the Fox singing contest. Van Pelt didn't persuade the show's judges to rescue her from dismissal Thursday with a last-chance rendition of Whitney Houston's "I Believe In You and Me."

"Ultimately, Ryan, no, sorry," judge Randy Jackson told "Idol" host Ryan Seacrest when asked if she would be saved.

Van Pelt, who pleased the panel Wednesday with her shorter, darker hairstyle and sultry interpretation of "New York State of Mind," was revealed to be among the bottom three vote-getters alongside 17-year-old vocal acrobat Deandre Brackensick of San Jose, Calif., and goofy 22-year-old nonprofit organizer Heejun Han of New York.

"Idol" mentor Jimmy Iovine lashed out at 21-year-old pawn shop worker Phillip Phillips of Leesburg, Ga., for not following the advice of the show's advisers for his performance. Iovine also admonished Han for his over-the-top take on "My Life."

"I'm not trying to be a star," Han said in response to the criticism. "I'm just trying to be who I am."

The nine remaining finalists will return to the stage to perform for viewer votes next Wednesday.
