3 Mind Tricks to Ease Your Anxiety | Men's Health News

Big Parade in Madrid

Does this make you anxious?

Relax to prevent wrinkles. A new study in PLoS ONE suggests that the more stressed you are, the faster you age.

Researchers at Brigham and Women?s Hospital in Massachusetts studied questionnaire data from more than 5,200 people. They found that those who get seriously stressed by heights, small spaces, crowds, and certain social situations had shorter telomeres?the caps on the end of chromosomes that protect DNA from damage and shorten over time?than stress-free folks. Turns out, there?s about a six-year difference.

Past research has linked longer telomeres with lower risks of heart disease, cancer, and early death. The good news: How you handle a stress can ease anxiety, says David Spound, M.Ed., a stress reduction teacher at the University of Massachusetts Medical School?s Center for Mindfulness. Here are three common stressful situations and how to calm the heck down in each one. (Need another reason to relax? Learn How Stress Sabotages Your Workout.)

A Job Interview
It doesn?t matter how qualified you may be?nerves still tend to show up in the form of sweaty palms and what-ifs in interviews. Spound?s trick? Tell yourself beforehand that it?s okay to be anxious: ?Remind yourself why you?re there, that you have something to offer, that you don?t know how it?s going to turn out, but that you?ll do your best.? Rather than criticizing yourself for being nervous, choosing to address your fear and acknowledge your skills should help ease your anxiety, he says.

A Mountain of Work
The issue here is time, not you being a poor worker. Your move: Devise a better schedule to manage your workload. Coming in an hour early or staying two hours late (even just for a day or two) could be the fix, Spound says. Once you?ve finished your work, try to shorten one of your workdays next week to make up for it.

Big Crowds
A large crowd at a concert or sports game can instantly induce stressful thoughts. But the thing is, that?s natural. Choose your companions wisely: someone who can reassure you??look at me? or ?it?s okay??that there?s nothing to worry about, says Jason Moser, Ph.D, an assistant psychology professor at Michigan State University. Second, face it head-on by focusing on people?s faces and clothes, colors, and sounds. ?Be mindful of the world around you in the present moment. When anxious thoughts and feelings arise, acknowledge them, and then shift your focus back to what?s happening around you,? Moser says. Jada Pinkett Smith Tweets Bikini Pic, Words of Encouragement

Jada Pinkett Smith has no problem showing some serious skin when it comes to important causes.

The actress got naked last month in the name of human trafficking awareness, and now she's showing off her bikini body for the sake of the over-40 crowd.

Jada Pinkett Smith Bikini Body

Smith Tweeted a photo of herself in the water over the weekend, along with the caption: "To my Forty and over crew! Don't believe the hype…we DO get better with age!"

Of course, it helps when you are rich and can afford a personal trainer and a personal chef and can take the time in between movies or TV shows to work out like crazy. But still.

Jada has been battling divorce rumors in the press for months now, but there are no actual signs that she and Will Smith will be splitting any time soon.

Wikipad gaming tablet specs revealed, Tegra 3 and Jelly Bean

Android Central

What we see here is the Wikipad, a gaming centered Android tablet that first made an appearance at CES in Las Vegas. In an interview with the guys over at Venturebeat, the hardware specs of the device were revealed in full. And it reads pretty nicely.

Powering the Wikipad is a 1.4GHz Tegra 3, RAM is set at 1GB and onboard storage sits at 16GB. The storage could still be increased however prior to any actual launch of the device. Which version of Android will we see, Gingerbread? Ice Cream Sandwich? No. At launch the Wikipad will be running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Cameras, they're included too and there is an 8MP shooter on the back, and a 2MP on the front.

The key to the gaming credentials lie within that pretty spectacular looking gamepad dock peripheral. Many might be expecting to have to shell out some of their hard earned green for it, but happily that isn't the case. The gamepad will be included in the box with every Wikipad purchased. It doesn't hide away any of the tablet's ports or speakers either, so it can pretty much live in this state round the clock if desired.

Talk of a gaming focused device wouldn't be complete with talk of the screen. There isn't anything groundbreaking, but what there is should do the job well enough. The 10.1 inch display is an IPS panel running at 1280x800. For future models, glasses-free 3D may be considered -- although personally, we kind of hope it isn't.

But what about battery life, a potential stumbling block for a device such as this. Apparently the battery is good enough to power 6 hours of continuous gaming, and 8 hours of video playback. Again, not groundbreaking but adequate for most prospective buyers.

No specific pricing or release dates were discussed, although the intention is to ship the Wikipad before the end of the year. That leaves plenty of time to get it on to your Christmas lists.

Is Tehran?s Mayor Iran?s Next Political Star? | World | TIME.com

Talking to cabbies is a timeworn journalistic technique. But when the area of coverage is Iran, it has merit. Drivers have always been barometers of political trends in Iran?s capital among the middle class. It is said that during the Islamic Republic?s formative years, taxi drivers were loath to discuss politics, lest it draw them into trouble. To avoid the risks, they dangled small signs from their rearview mirrors that read, ?Political debate not permitted.?

Today, those same taxis ? in some cases the same remarkably old Iranian-made Paykans ? are the venue for the most unabashedly frank political discussions. Conversations almost always gravitate toward the economy and the rising prices of commodities like bread, rice and milk ? a situation exacerbated by subsidy cuts over the past two years, the precipitous devaluation of the Iranian rial last year and by mounting sanctions against the country.

Among the loquacious taxi-driving community, almost no political figure emerges unscathed. Some direct their ire toward President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for inflation and a variety of other perceived sins; others have little but contempt for former President Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, despite his recent reformist-leaning positions. But one politician does enjoy a certain privileged status among Tehran?s cabbies, even if that means he isn?t the object of outright animosity. That would be the mayor of Tehran, Mohammed-Baqer Qalibaf.

?I?m not voting in the next election,? one taxi driver declares, skeptical of the country?s electoral system. But his resolve comes with strings attached: ?I?ll only cast my ballot if Qalibaf decides to run for the presidency; in that case, I?ll vote for him.? He may get an opportunity. On Monday, in a conversation with the semiofficial Fars News Agency, Qalibaf adviser Mohammad Nabi Rudaki said that the mayor?s would be a ?certain? presence as a candidate in the Islamic Republic?s 11th presidential election next year. Rudaki explained that the mayor would make an announcement later when he wasn?t busy with work. Said the adviser: ?He is engaged in important and big matters in the capital.?

As Tehran?s confederation of taxi drivers navigate the city?s tangled alleyways and congested thoroughfares, they profess their admiration for the mayor. Indeed, cab rides are a bit like show-and-tell. Qalibaf?s numerous construction projects and reforms are on public display as passengers and cabbies chug toward their destinations. As one taxi driver engages in small talk, we swoop down under a Qalibaf-commissioned bridge and past scores of newly planted sycamores on the Middle East?s longest street, Vali Asr. Among his works in progress are the development of parks and green spaces in the hilly Abbas Abad neighborhood, the double-deckering of the Sadr highway and the completion of the decades-old Imam Ali Highway project that will run the entire length of the capital. Several of Qalibaf?s biggest projects will be completed around the Iranian election season next year.

As the two-term mayor of Tehran, Qalibaf is pushing Iran?s burgeoning capital in startling new directions. He?s overhauled the city?s public-transportation system with a reliable network of buses, accelerated the construction of metro stations, worked toward expanding a much needed citywide sewer system, standardized the city?s garbage-collection system, worked to prop up new highways, tunnels and bridges to ease the flow of traffic, and constructed numerous parks with an aim to expand Tehran?s ?green space.?

The Abbas Abad project, for one, is seeing the transformation of a prodigious plot of land in central Tehran into a lush, park-museum-library-recreational-complex crisscrossed by several highways. It is designed to be linked together by a series of Gondola lifts and pedestrian bridges. It is scheduled for completion some time next year.

More building is on the way, with some media reports even suggesting that the city?s detested Evin prison ? where most of Tehran?s political prisoners are held ? may be on the chopping block to be replaced by another one of Qalibaf?s signature parks at some point in the future. Perhaps as a harbinger, the prison?s entrance is now decorated with a well-tended lawn and concrete terraces planted with flowers.

Qalibaf is a former Revolutionary Guard air-force commander who is said to have played an influential role in the 1982 liberation of Khorramshahr that helped turn the tide in the Iran-Iraq war. He is no rookie in Iranian politics. As Iran?s chief of national police, he equipped officers with top-of-the-line Mercedes cop cars, kick-started Iran?s equivalent of the 911 emergency hotline and computerized documents and form submission for the sprawling department. During the second half of the reformist administration of President Mohammed Khatami ? who was in office from 1997 to 2005 ? Qalibaf led the fight against counterfeit currency and smuggling.

In 2005, the rise to the presidency of another mayor of Tehran ? Mahmoud Ahmadinejad ? put a halt to the work of the reformists. Qalibaf had run for the presidency too but came in fourth. Still, he outpolled other prominent politicians, including Ali Larijani, who is now head of the Iranian parliament.

As mayors of Tehran go, however, Qalibaf, while admired for his ?unspeakably good management skills,? is not the most beloved among those who occupied that office. ?I can say that Qalibaf has certainly been good, though perhaps not as good as [Mayor Gholamhossein] Karbaschi,? opines a younger driver, referring to a hugely popular Tehran mayor in the 1990s who similarly worked to expand the city?s green space with scores of parks and thousands of trees and oversaw the construction of crucial highways that Qalibaf and others have since expanded. A staunch supporter of Khatami, Karbaschi was toppled by corruption charges leveled against him by conservative critics, made memorable by a nationally televised trial in 1998 that saw him sentenced to two years in prison. Karbaschi and his allies have described it as a smear campaign to curtail his popularity. It is a lesson that all politicians with presidential ambitions must surely take to heart.

Oh No They Didn't! - Can Robsten Romance Be Saved?

"She doesn't belong in a committed relationship."
That's not me talking, that's an expert: Dr. Gilda Carle, relationship specialist and psychotherapist who works with celebrity clientele.
So where does Carle get her conclusion? Well, you can start with the nature of the actress's admitted cheating: a seemingly devil-may-care dalliance with her married director in broad daylight.
See more photos of actresses who fell for their directors
"She's 22 years old," Carle points out. "She's been in a committed relationship for 4 years?much too young to making a commitment. She's a child. She did this very public thing with director in order to be found out.
"It was self-sabotage."
As for why someone as successful as K.Stew would want to act against her own apparent best interests, well, making out in a car in front of a paparazzo certainly is one way to leave a lover.
See all of Rob & Kristen's magazine covers together
"She did it so she could have an easy out" with Rob, Carle suggests. "But of course it wasn't thought through; she's very immature. She had no idea that this would be so transparent to everybody."
Even the actress's cheating partner, her married director Rupert Sanders, has significance, Carle tells me.
"It was important to her to know she was still attractive to other guys. But obviously Kristen isn't looking for a relationship right now, so she picks a guy who is married."
As my colleagues at E! Online have reported, it looks like Rob has left the Los Angeles-area home that he shares with his Twilight saga costar. Don't be shocked if the two of them try one last time for lasting romance, Carle predicts. After all, Stewart did make that public apology.
But, Carle says, "if Rob takes her back it will be more of the same."
"She was playing a role of a girlfriend who claimed that she was committed, but she wasn't committed," Carle insists. "She just needs to grow up."
Well, at least her apology was mature?

World's eyes on London ahead of opening ceremony

London began the final countdown Friday to the opening ceremony that will officially kick off its Olympic Games, with some 120 world leaders arriving in the British capital for the spectacle.

Organisers expect more than a billion people worldwide to watch the event on television, while tens of thousands will see the show live at the Olympic Stadium in east London.

The Olympic torch was making its way down the River Thames onboard the Gloriana, the royal barge of Queen Elizabeth II, on the last day of its 10-week journey around Britain.

In Westminster, Big Ben chimed for three minutes from 8:12 am (0712 GMT) to ring in the Games, 12 hours ahead of pre-ceremony entertainment scheduled to start at the symbolic time of 20:12 pm.

The huge bell at the British parliament was joined by hundreds of bell-ringers across the country in a cacophony of ringing to mark the beginning of the extravaganza.

Footballer David Beckham is expected to be among the final torchbearers carrying the Olympic torch as it finally arrives at the stadium for the opening ceremony.

The former England captain, who played a key part in London's original bid for the Games seven years ago, said the thought of the spectacle gave him "goosebumps".

"I have been lucky enough to have been involved in some amazing sporting moments in my career, but nothing can compare with what is about to take place in London," he wrote in The Sun newspaper.

"I know every part of the Games is going to be spectacular and tonight is the night it all kicks off, with the whole world watching Great Britain and the opening ceremony.

"It will be one of those moments people will always remember watching."

Sneak previews of the ?27 million ($42 million, 35 million euros) opening ceremony -- filmed at Wednesday's final rehearsal -- suggest it will be a grand but quirky production, reflecting the philosophy of director Danny Boyle.

The Slumdog Millionaire Oscar-winner has promised to create a "picture of us as a nation" and revealed that the eccentric show will feature live sheep and dancing surgeons from the National Health Service.

Audience members at rehearsals for the ceremony have been full of praise for the show, but they have stayed tight-lipped about details.

The weather is expected to be dry for the ceremony after showers during the day in London.

Thousands of VIPs including some 120 national leaders are in town for the ceremony, with guests including Angelina Jolie, US First Lady Michelle Obama and the king of Swaziland.

The Games will see Britain launch its biggest-ever peacetime security operation, and British Prime Minister David Cameron stressed Thursday that safety would be his top priority.

"I think we've made as many preparations as we can. I think we have very good contingency plans in place," he told a press conference at the Olympic Park.

A force of more than 40,000 military and civilian personnel, backed by a huge intelligence operation, has turned the British capital into a fortress to protect venues, athletes and millions of visitors.

But security has been under the spotlight after the government was forced to deploy an extra 4,700 troops to guard the Games because of a recruitment shortfall at private contractor G4S.

USA Women's Basketball Beats Croatia 81-56 At London Olympics

LONDON -- Tina Charles scored 14 points and Angel McCoughtry added 13 to lead the U.S. women's basketball team to a sloppy 81-56 victory over Croatia on Saturday in their Olympic opener.

Coach Geno Auriemma had said he was hoping that the Americans could play a style of basketball that would be entertaining and help grow the game internationally. That didn't happen Saturday as the U.S. struggled for the first three quarters before pulling away to win their 34th consecutive Olympic contest.

The victory was far different than the 54-point pounding the Americans gave Croatia a week earlier.

Despite missing its first 14 shots, Croatia hung tough for the first 30 minutes before the Americans finally could pull away.

The U.S., which has dominated its opponents en route to the last four gold medals, only led 53-49 early in the fourth quarter before a 16-0 run put the game out of reach.

(AP) ? Communities around the Northeast are cleaning up after strong thunderstorms swept from Ohio into upstate New York, knocking out power to tens of thousands and leaving at least two people dead.

In New York City, the storm is blamed for killing a 61-year-old man who was struck by collapsing scaffolding outside a Brooklyn church. Police say lighting brought bricks down onto the scaffolding. A woman in Pennsylvania was killed by a tree felled by Thursday's powerful storms.

A state of emergency and curfew remains in effect in Elmira, N.Y., as crews continue clearing trees and repairing power lines that were brought down by a possible tornado.

The storms temporarily shut down operations at the annual Ohio State Fair in Columbus.

There's a chance of more storms around the region on Friday.

Jackson judge orders probe into children's welfare

(AP) ? A judge on Friday ordered an investigation into the well-being of Michael Jackson's children and a lawyer for the family matriarch said she will move to share guardianship of the children with the adult son of Tito Jackson.

Superior Court Judge Mitchell Beckloff told a court investigator to interview the three children independently and provide a report for review only by the judge, not attorneys involved in the case.

The order does not spell out a reason for the investigation, but it is likely intended to give the judge another perspective on how Jackson's children are coping after a week of family turmoil that included the absence of their grandmother and a dispute in the driveway of their home amid a feud over the estate of the pop superstar.

The court investigator was ordered to interview the children at school at a time to remain undisclosed. Beckloff received a similar report a few weeks after Jackson's death in 2009 and its contents remain sealed.

Beckloff said during a hearing earlier this week that there were no indications that Katherine Jackson had done anything wrong.

Under the proposed guardianship change, the 82-year-old Jackson would share oversight of the children with Tito Jackson's son in a deal that would relieve her of some of the day-to-day stresses of managing a famous family, her attorney Perry Sanders Jr. said.

The decision was made after a meeting between Katherine Jackson and Sanders on Thursday. He said Michael Jackson's eldest son has told attorneys he approves of the arrangement.

A formal filing for co-guardianship is expected next week. If approved, it would make Tito Joe "TJ" Jackson a co-guardian of the children ? Prince, Paris and Blanket ? who range in ages from 10 to 15.

TJ Jackson's attorneys suggest the co-guardianship arrangement in a filing Friday. It states that if either adult guardian dies or is unable to serve, the other will act alone in raising the children.

Under the plan, responsibility for managing staff and security at the home would shift to TJ Jackson. Katherine Jackson would keep control of a family allowance worth tens of thousands of dollars a month, Sanders said.

"Mrs. Jackson is extremely pleased with the prospect of enjoying the pleasure of raising Michael's children without the day-to-day tedium of items such as managing the large staff that goes with such a high-profile family and focus her attention on being a grandmother and raising Michael's children," Sanders wrote in a statement.

"She is eager to simply enjoy her great relationship with these children, while deeding over some of the stressors that go hand in hand with being a guardian," he wrote.

TJ Jackson, 34, is the children's first cousin and performs with his brothers in the group 3T.

Beckloff on Wednesday suspended Katherine Jackson's guardianship duties temporarily and appointed TJ Jackson as temporary guardian. The judge said he would likely re-instate Katherine Jackson as guardian upon her return.

Katherine Jackson had been at a Tucson, Ariz., spa since July 15 with her daughter Rebbie and other relatives and had not spoken to her grandchildren during that time. She returned to the Los Angeles area on Thursday.

"The minor children are very attached to (TJ Jackson) who has been very involved in their lives since the death of their father," TJ Jackson's attorneys wrote in the court filing. "Recent events have highlighted the need for continuity for the minor children."

The filing was required by Beckloff, but Sanders said it would be superseded by a joint petition next week.

Houston tops list of coolest U.S. cities

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Washington D.C may be the political center, New York is the financial hub and Los Angeles has its share of stars, but Houston is the capital of cool in the United States.

A new ranking by Forbes.com puts the Texas city, better known for oil, NASA and cowboys, at the top of its list of hip and trendy places to live, ahead of the Washington, D.C. and Los Angeles.

"Houston enjoyed 2.6 percent job growth last year and nearly 50,000 Americans flocked there in response ? particularly young professionals. In fact, the median age of a Houston resident is a youthful 33," according to Forbe.com.

Using data from Sperlings Best Places, Forbes.com ranked the cities by looking at entertainment options, the number of restaurants and bars, recreational, outdoor and cultural activities, cost of living, green spaces, and job opportunities.

It found the influx of young professionals in Houston has prompted an increase in restaurants, galleries and stylish housing, which along with a thriving theater and art scene make it an enviable place to live.

Dallas and Seattle were also high on the list, coming in fourth and fifth, while San Francisco and New York just squeezed into the top 10.

California and Texas tied with five cities each in the top 20.

(7 weeks pregnant)? - Three years, one stone then home

A hop back in time to ?

Sunday, June 3, 2012

Oh wow, the past three weeks have been a nightmare of tiredness and nausea. No amount of sleep or ginger ale seem able to relieve either. I found the first three months of my last pregnancy extremely hard-going, much tougher than the following six months, and it seems that this one is set to be the same. I can?t get my brain or body going and am counting down the days?until the rock-star feeling of the second trimester. Please let me have that rock-star feeling again! Minus the cankles and the massive boobs would be nice though.

I find myself looking back to my first pregnancy quite a lot but my main memories of the initial three months are trying to make a quick but discreet dash to the loo to throw up every ten minutes. After narrowly missing my boss? shoes last week, I think it?s fair to say that discretion has gone out of the window already ? ?Rachel, do you have something to tell me?? Some things are just so hard to hide, aren?t they?

I nervously made my way to see my gynecologist for the first scan on Tuesday. Even after a positive pregnancy test, I found myself still unwilling to believe the result without his confirmation. But, at 6 weeks and 2 days, I saw my little 3.5mm baby and it?s ever so tiny heartbeat on the screen in front of me. It was an absolutely joyous moment and now it?s finally starting to sink in that, all things going well, we?re going to be a family of four in 2013.

Now I just need to find an extra boost of energy to see me through until the morning sickness and tiredness abates. It?s CK that I feel most sorry for as I find myself having to sit down more often rather than playing with him. But we?ve been out for longer walks which he seems to like ? I?m finding that walking at a slow but steady pace and filling my lungs with fresh, Swiss air is doing me the world of good and keeping CK entertained without me having to exert too much energy. Shame the weather has made a turn for the worse this week.

My next scan is a mere two and a half weeks away. I find it very reassuring to have them so frequently. At any point in time, I?m four weeks away at the most from knowing that something is wrong. Maybe the Swiss are a little cautious compared to the Brits but when it comes to the health of my unborn child, I?m so thankful for it. Plus, I get to build up quite a gallery even before the little one is born.

So now I must bid you farewell so I can rush off and down another glass of ginger ale and take a nap. Oh what an exciting life I lead ? but I wouldn?t have it any other way.

VIDEO - Business Insider

After three decades of railing against the U.S. central banking system, Ron Paul finally had his day Wednesday, when the House of Representatives overwhelmingly approved his bill to audit the Federal Reserve with a bipartisan 327-98 vote.?

The vote marked a triumphant ? albeit largely symbolic ? last stand for the Texas Congressman, who will retire from politics at the end of this year.?

But while Paul's bill has broad bipartisan support, it's fate remains uncertain, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has said that the Senate will not consider the legislation, virtually guaranteeing that it will never become law.?

But Reid hasn't always been opposed to a central bank audit. In fact, the Nevada Senator has himself introduced legislation to audit the Federal Reserve, and co-sponsored several bills to increase transparency at the central bank in the 1990s, according to government transparency watchdog Govtrack.?

There's even a video:

The 1995 speech sounds like it could be Ron Paul.?

"I have sponsored legislation every year that would call for an audit of the Federal Reserve system. I offer that amendment every year, every year it gets nowhere," Reid says. "I think it would be interesting to know about the Federal Reserve. I think we should audit the Federal Reserve ? it's taxpayer's money that's being used there. But we don't do that."?

"People just don't care about the Federal Reserve. Maybe it's because it's a subject that's not very interesting ? it's not pornography, it's not murder, it's not an issue that deals with the Wild West."?

Reid then suggests Congress just combine the Fed with the CIA. ??

The Democratic Senate Majority Leader's office has not yet responded to Business Insider's request for comment.?

Man charged for refusing to leave NC jail

(AP) ? A man who'd just been released from jail in northern North Carolina was arrested again for refusing to leave the jail after authorities wouldn't give him a ride to a motel.

The News & Record of Greensboro reports (http://bit.ly/OZm7NK) that 37-year-old Rodney Dwayne Valentine was charged with trespassing.

Valentine was released from the Rockingham County jail Saturday morning after being behind bars since May 22. The sheriff's office says he asked them to drive him to a local motel and they refused. Deputies charged Valentine with second-degree trespassing when he had refused to leave the jail by Saturday afternoon.

He's being held on $500 bond and is scheduled to appear in court Aug. 9. It was not clear if he has a lawyer.

The Muppets Sever Ties With Anti-Gay Chick-Fil-A Via Facebook Meme From The Other 98%

Jim Henson Company And The Muppets Renounce Chick-Fil-A For Anti-Gay Policy

As reported yesterday, The Jim Henson Company, which created such characters and shows as The Muppets and Fraggle Rock, has renounced Chick-Fil-A and severed ties with the anti-gay company. In a statement, The Jim Henson Company announced:

?The Jim Henson Company has celebrated and embraced diversity and inclusiveness for over fifty years and we have notified Chick-Fil-A that we do not wish to partner with them on any future endeavors. Lisa Henson, our CEO is personally a strong supporter of gay marriage and has directed us to donate the payment we received from Chick-Fil-A to GLAAD.?

The Other 98%, a group on Facebook who believe that the economy and American democracy are being hijacked by an elite 2% that is selling out the American dream, took the statement from The Jim Henson Company and produced a meme that is now circulating on Facebook.

The Muppets Facebook Meme Renouncing Chick-Fil-A For Anti-Gay Policy

Although some of the comments about the Facebook meme illustrating that The Jim Henson Company has severed its ties with Chick-Fil-A are negative, many fans of The Muppets have expressed their support. Here are some of the fan comments about the meme:

?Way to go, Jim Henson Company!!!! So there, Chick-Fil-A! Love this!?

?Just when I thought I loved the Muppets as much as possible? Yet another reason gets added to the list. Hurray!?

?I always did love the Muppets! (and every project Jim Henson ever touched) Thank you Jim Henson Company for doing the right thing and giving me still another reason to appreciate you!?

?Yay! The muppets are boycotting Chick-fil-A!?

?Jim Henson was a kind man with a good heart. I?m glad to see that his legacy lives on.?

As of writing this, the Muppets Facebook meme has 15,043 likes and 14,429 shares.

What do you think about the Facebook meme currently circulating in which The Muppets pass on the message from The Jim Henson Company about severing ties with Chick-Fil-A?

tam-sense: exhaustion

For the past three days I have been trying to work myself into a state of exhausted numbness. I'm not sure if this is healthy, but I fear the alternative. If I sit, I think. When I think, I cry. I cry many times throughout the day anyway, and right now idleness feels like a dangerous way to sink into a deep self-pitying depression. I am hurting, and the exhaustion of constant physical activity feels good.

My sister and brother-in-law will be moving in with us in a couple of weeks (for about a year, while they go back to school), and I have been busy turning my basement craft room into a bedroom for them, and turning the main floor guest room into a combination office/guest/craft room. I am taking advantage of this transition to finally unpack some boxes that have been sitting in the basement, untouched, since we moved in three years ago. Kevin was a little dismayed to realize that I didn't intend to simply move boxes from one area of the house to another, but that instead I was embarking on a grief-fueled total re-organization of our house. I have sifted through dozens of boxes of old school notebooks, photographs, craft supplies, papers (oh, the paper!), and random miscellany. I have gathered about a carload's worth of stuff to either sell or donate, and I have collected at least six paper bags worth of paper to be recycled.

Between all of Kevin's business school papers that he decided he no longer needs (after having never looked at them in the five years since graduating), and all of the papers I've saved from my ten years of on-and-off undergraduate work, there was a lot of paper to sift through. One of the funnier moments of the night came when Kevin realized that I had an entire box full of half-used notebooks that I have been saving (and carting around with me from home to home) since my first round of college at UC Davis in the early 2000's. I was raised by a man who saved every scrap of scratch paper, used every pencil until it was an ungraspable nub, and was known to unwrap gifts very slowly in an effort to save the wrapping paper for later re-use. Throwing away notebooks with clean pages feels wrong. So, Kevin and I spent a not insignificant amount of time tonight going through each notebook, tearing out the clean pages, and transferring them to binders. Our efforts were fruitful - we ended up with nine 1-inch binders full of clean notebook paper! That should last us the next ten years at least.

A few noteworthy things I came across during the basement unpacking and organization:

1. Endless note cards, greeting cards, handwritten notes, and little scraps of paper with sweet notes from Kevin and friends and family, that I have saved in the years between high school and the present. 2. Many old journals of mine that are written in such a melodramatic way that I couldn't read most of it without cringing. There was one lovely entry, however, from December of 2003, when we had been dating for four months, in which I wrote about falling in love with Kevin. 3. A few "things to do before I am (enter an age here)" lists. It was satisfying to see that I'd accomplished a number of the items on these lists. There were also items that I no longer have any intention of every accomplishing, and items which are now on my "Before 30" and "Before 35" lists. 4. Many love notes written to Kevin, or from Kevin, from our early dating days, our engagement years, and the early marriage years. I'm so glad I've saved these notes. A particular favorite is a note from Kevin with an Einstein quote that reads, "Exhausted from a silence long/This is to show you clear how strong/The thoughts of you will always sit/Up in my brains little attic," with a funny little drawing of Einstein. The most difficult note to read was a rough draft of my wedding vows to Kevin. Most of it was fine, but when I got to the line, "I promise you summertime baseball games, fall walks, and babies," it felt like I'd had the wind knocked out of me. I've delivered on the first two parts of that vow (many summertime days have been spent rooting for the Giants, A's, and Twins, and there have been lots of fall walks), but the last part - ouch. What a promise.

5. Of course, old photographs dating back to my seventh-grade trip to Washington DC and New York City. A trip where I spent an entire roll of film on headstones in Arlington Cemetery, and during which I got lost in Manhattan and had to be rescued at a Sbarro's by one of the teachers on the trip. Majorly embarrassing, and I think it took a couple of weeks off my mother's life to get that phone call.

6. The worst photograph ever taken of me. It's so bad that I don't have the guts to show it to you on this blog. Some day. Maybe. If you were a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Minneapolis about four years ago, you might have seen said photograph. Please know that is not what I really look like.

I am so thankful to have a reason to stay busy, though I know that exhaustion and lack of sleep will eventually catch up with me. Also, I am running out of boxes to sort through. Anyone have a basement that needs organizing?

An undated hand-written note from my then boyfriend, now husband.?

P.S.?Thank you for all of the kind thoughts and love being sent our way. Much needed, and much appreciated.?

Beijing floods unleash online criticism of government (+video)

The heaviest rain in six decades left at least 37 people dead and raised criticism online about Beijing's infrastructure.

By Christina Larson,?Correspondent / July 23, 2012

A car damaged by floods is seen after heavy rainfalls hit Zhou Kou Dian Village, Fangshan district, near Beijing July 22. The Chinese capital's heaviest rainstorm in six decades killed at least 37 people, flooded streets, and stranded 80,000 people at the main airport, state media, and the government said on Sunday.

For 16 hours on Saturday, sheets of unrelenting rain pummeled China?s capital, reportedly the heaviest storm in six decades.

By Sunday, Pan Anjun, deputy chief of the Beijing flood control headquarters, had tallied the damage. The Chinese newswire Xinhua reported that at least 37 people had died in storm-related damage or events, including 25 who drowned, 6 who were trapped in collapsing buildings, 5 who were electrocuted by fallen power lines, and 1 who was struck by lightning.

Some 500 flights into or out of Beijing Capital Airport were canceled. Reportedly 736 homes were flooded, and 66,000 residents in the hardest-hit areas had been temporarily located, many from the suburban district of Fangshan. At least 31 roads or bridges had collapsed.

All told, Mr. Pan estimated 2 million people were affected. And many of those have taken to online forums to express anger over what they see as ongoing lack of concern for proper construction amid Beijing's pell-mell growth ? as well as for people's needs amid the storm.

On Weibo, China?s Twitter-like social media site, some residents suggested that China?s Meteorological Bureau should have alerted Beijingers to potential dangers through text messages sent via China?s giant state-run telecoms, China Mobile and China Unicom. Of greater Beijing?s roughly 20 million people, roughly 95 percent have cellphones.

The impact of the unusual storm was exacerbated by problems in the municipal drainage system. Beijing?s total urban area has doubled in a decade, from about 700 square kilometers (270 sq. mi.) in 2000 to almost 1,400 square kilometers (500 sq. mi.) in 2010. Many of the city?s newer drains are built to absorb up to 45 millimeters (1.7 inches) of rain per hour, but at several points the volume of Saturday?s storm was much greater.

?When the city hosts big conferences, there are guards at every bridge. But when the big rain comes, there are none,? wrote Dong Lu, the popular sports anchor and commentator.

?We hosted the Asian Games and Olympic Games,? wrote someone on Weibo going by the name Wen. ?We spent billions of yuan to do monumental things. But now after after the heavy rains, we discover that we don't know how to build sewers.?

And as another concluded: ?The secret of Qingdao, a [coastal] city that not afraid of floods? Its drains were built by Germany.?

Pan, the flood control official, estimated the total cost of damages to be about 10 billion renminbi, or $1.6 billion. More than 13,000 vehicle insurance claims have already poured into the China Insurance Regulatory Commission?s Beijing branch.

Kevin Chou contributed to this report.

Three Sources: Drawing the Line

Drawing the Line

I'm going to stretch for a segue here. Very young or feeble readers may want to hang on to something.

But there is an important aspect of liberty hiding in a frivolous and a not frivolous example. When somebody calls for regulation, I always ask "Who draws the line?" If there is no regulation, free people will choose.

Mayor Bloomberg of NYC, of course, thinks he can draw the magic line at 16 ounces. Seth Goldman of Honest TEA dissents. He makes healthy, low calorie, all natural drinks that Boulder Mommies would love. Uh-oh...

Under the proposed changes to Article 81 of the NYC Health Code, food-service establishments would not be able to sell packages larger than 16 ounces for drinks that have more than 25 calories per eight-ounce serving. Honest Tea's top-selling item is our organic Honey Green Tea, which has 35 calories per eight-ounce serving and is in a 16.9 oz. bottle. We label 70 calories on the front of the package so consumers know what's in the full bottle.

We initially went with 16.9 oz. (which is 500 milliliters) because it is a standard size that our bottle supplier had in stock at the time. We subsequently invested several hundred thousand dollars for 16.9 oz. bottle molds. Is 16.9 ounces the perfect size? Who knows? As a beverage marketer, we willingly submit to the unforgiving judgment of the market. What we did not anticipate was an arbitrary decision to constrain consumer choice

So 16oz of Mountain Dew is fine; 16.9 of organic Honey Green Tea -- not so much. Not that I am going to outlaw Dew, but climbing into the nanny brain, this seems an unintended consequence at best.

I could quit now and this would be a good post, but I promised a tortured segue.

Senator Dianne Feinstein (D - CA) was on FOX News Sunday yesterday, bravely drumming up interest in her lapsed "Assault Weapons Ban." She disingenuously rattled off statistics of gun violence after it was not renewed implying it would have helped. Her most convincing point was railing against 100-round magazines: "Why do you need that?"

Well, Senator, as an inalienable right, one doesn't have to explain to you. I'd agree it sounds pretty excessive -- Jeeburz, that would cost a lot to fill it. But you are asking me to let you declare the right number. Ten rounds? Five? Twenty? If we're attempting to impede mass murders, smaller is better. But manufacturers like Seth Goldman (Tea guy, remember?) have capital invested in making certain sizes. Larger firms will be able to lobby Congress to allow my seven-round but not my competitors eight -- why eight is irresponsible!

Frighten people with 100-round clips and 44 oz sodas, then you can take away their 500ml Teas and 11-round magazines -- all the while arrogating power over the manufacturers and consumers.

How To Fulfill Your Fitness Ambitions | AACE IPI

A lot of people really take interest in fitness and exercising to get themselves into great shape. Your fitness is very important. Staying in shape helps you to lead a very active and fun-filled life, and it also helps increase your life span. If you are interested in being healthier you should read this article.

You can hire a personal trainer that can help you stay motivate, that is their life! Personal trainers have a wealth of experience to draw from. Some people may not like having a personal trainer, but for some, it makes all the difference in the world.

While exercising is certainly an important part of getting in shape, stretching is just as important. When you do proper stretches before and after exercise you?ll be able to loosen up your muscles. This helps to reduce strains and potential muscle tears.

An excellent recommendation is to begin doing dips. Dips are a wonder exercise that focuses on your upper body, including your shoulders, chest and triceps. There are numerous ways in which you can perform them. You can do dips in between two benches, for example. Another good strategy is to add weight as you?re doing your dips.

One simple way to increase your muscle mass is to lift lots of weight just a few times. Start by choosing a particular focus, like the chest area. Before getting into the main workout, warm up with light weights. Try doing around 15 or so reps for the warm up. The second set should consist of heavier weights with half the amount of repetitions. Add five pounds to the weight and the repeat this for a third set.

Calf Muscles

Do donkey calf raises to build calf muscles. As you might expect from the name, the donkey calf raise is specifically designed to focus on your calves. To perform the exercise, another person sits on your back and you simply raise your calf muscles.

Use a steady cycling pace. You will get tired very easily if you pedal too fast. Make sure that you have a slow and steady pace at first. After time you?ll notice your endurance increasing. When you pedal at a pace that is steady and brisk, you will feel the pull and are more apt to realize if you are causing injury.

One way to incorporate fitness into your life is to begin a garden. Gardening and yard work are more demanding than you would think. Not only do you have to squat when gardening, but you also need to weed and dig. Gardening is only one thing that can be done at home in order to stay in shape.

If you have access to a sauna, use it! Sitting in a sauna is a great way to end a long workout, and they can benefit your health in several ways. In particular, they help to facilitate muscle relaxation, which can soothe you after a tough workout.

When first starting a fitness program, you should begin slowly. Keep your focus on using the correct techniques and form, as well as your breathing. With this focus, there will be less chances of you becoming injured or losing steam due to lack of breath.
