Iran reportedly seeking to create alternatives to Google, Gmail

Published September 30, 2012

Associated Press

An Iranian official says Tehran plans to create its own search engine and e-mail service to replace Google and its Gmail e-mail service, even as it weights lifting a ban on Gmail enacted in response to an anti-Islam film.

Sunday reports by Iranian newspapers including the independent Aftab daily quote Deputy Telecommunications Minister Ali Hakim Javadi as saying he hoped to launch the Fakhr search engine and Fajr e-mail in the near future.

Hakim Javadi said authorities are discussing lifting the ban on Gmail imposed by an Iranian court in response to the posting of the film on YouTube, which is owned by Google.

Google's search engine service is still available.

Tehran has long promised to launch its own "clean" and "national" version of the Internet to curb Western influence.

Raissman: Growing pains for NFL Network

The following is not a blanket indictment of the NFL Network. But thanks to Time Warner Cable, our local cable monopolist that finally caved to Roger Goodell, a new set of targets are now in sight.

Rich Eisen, NFLN?s frontman is an engaging guy. He?s got a lot of gameshow host in him too. During Thursday?s pregame leading into Browns-Ravens, Eisen said Baltimore having to play Sunday night then return to play Thursday night was a tough situation.

Who created this mess? Eisen did not address that. If Eisen was for real, he would have somehow ? even subtly ? explained how NFL owners, for the benefit of NFLN and their bank accounts, added five games to its ?Thursday Night Football? schedule creating a hardship for participating teams and severely compromising the on-field product.

Instead, he treated viewers like morons. An honest explanation was not a high priority for Eisen.

Still he didn?t come off nearly as clueless as Michelle Beisner, an NFLN reporter who was in Seattle for the controversial finish of Packers-Seahawks. After the game she interviewed Pete Carroll on the field, but never ? no never ? asked one question about the way the game ended. Or the replacement officials call that gift wrapped his illegitimate win.

Instead, Beisner asked the following crucial questions: 1)?Coach, congratulations. What an unbelievable victory and finish. What do you have to say about this team right now?? 2)?Your defense, eight sacks in the first half. Talk about what your defense was able to accomplish tonight?? 3)?And how do you feel your young quarterback (Russell Wilson) handled the bright lights of Monday night football tonight??

This was embarrassing. Doubt NFLN suits will be running Beisner?s one-on-one in their best interviews of 2012 segment. Beisner shouldn?t take a solo hit here. Whoever was producing this segment should have been in her ear screaming: ?Ask him about the play.?

Bet Steve Mariucci would have. Unfortunately, if you haven?t played in the NFL you might not understand what he?s saying. Mariucci, one of NFLN?s marquee personalities, often sounds like he?s sending in plays to a QB. Not only is he too technical, he appears to be reading from notes. Someone at NFLN should remind him about the virtues of spontaneity.

Mariucci is not nearly as technical as NFLN game analyst Mike Mayock, who sounds like he?s in a film session with coaches rather than broadcasting to the unwashed masses.

Still, for us, NFLN is well worth watching. The reasons should be obvious.

ESPN BOOKING ISIAH?
There?s a lot of NBA stuff going on at ESPN, as the Bristol Clown Community College faculty searches for new talent. Reports had Isiah Thomas auditioning (he was in Bristol Wednesday) and, according to NBA stoolies, Mike D?Antoni also took a shot at a gig.

The Thomas stuff is interesting. Are ESPN honchos looking to pair Zeke with Magic Johnson, his long-time nemeis, in ABC?s NBA studio? The matchup could produce major sparks, something the sleep inducing show desperately needs.

And if Thomas were to get the gig, how close would he be tracking the Knicks and James (Guitar Jimmy) Dolan?
?

FORGET-ME-YES
These multi-media former quarterbacks should keep better track of what they are saying or risk being accused of flip-flopping.

Like Rich Gannon. On Sunday?s Jets-Dolphins CBS telecast he said: ?I don?t want to hear Jets fans blaming (Mark) Sanchez. It?s on his receivers. They can?t get open.?

Yet a day later on CBS Sports Network?s ?NFL Monday QB? Gannon said he ?doesn?t believe? in Sanchez.
The dude is confused. Or just forgot what he said Sunday.

INSIDE THE SNOOZE
Leave it to Cris Collinsworth to add a bizarre twist to the replacement referee mess.

Under the unwatchful eye of the replacements, Collinsworth said, the NFL returned to its rock-em-sock-em days. ?Nobody can tell me these games haven?t been more physical. It?s like going back to the ?60s or ?70s kind of football,? Collinsworth said on Showtime?s ?Inside the NFL.? ?And you?ve got the Kardashians refereeing.?

Maybe Collinsworth can get a Kardashian to be a guest panelist on ?Inside the NFL.? In that department, the show is now 0-for-3. Though Kris Jenkins, the latest chair warmer, would put on a show, but he wasn?t his feisty self. Clearly the Showtime/CBS brainiacs need some advice.

Bring in Tony Siragusa to mix it up. With this guy running his mouth, no one will fall asleep after the first half hour of what used to be a thrill-a-minute show.

NAME THAT MAN!
John (Pa Pinstripe) Sterling must have wanted to keep it a big secret. Tuesday night (Yankees-Twins) Suzyn (Ma Pinstripe) Waldman had the night off and another voice was yakking with him.

Joined the game in progress and had no idea who the guy was. Sterling didn?t identify the dude. He kept it a secret. Like he does with the score. The only way we found out the mystery guest was Jeff Nelson was by reading about it on Twitter.

ANDARIESE OUT

MSG moles say John Andariese, the veteran Knicks voice, will not return to the radio booth this season. ... His role of keeper of ?the media elite? has brought a new dimension to SNY?s Cris Carlin. On a recent edition of ?Loud Mouths? CC gave a thumbs up to Ramses Barden adding: ?And I?m not one of those Giants beat writers who fell in love with him three years ago.? What Carlin meant to say was these particular Giants beat writers will never be part of ?the media elite.? ... When Keith Hernandez shaved off his mustache it brought a $10,000 donation to the Jacquelyn Hernandez Adult Day Health Center in Brooklyn. The facility is named after his mom and assists Alzheimer patients.

DUDE OF THE WEEK
NICK BUONICONTI
For his devotion to finding a cure for paralysis. His son Marc?s life-changing spinal chord injury, sustained while making a tackle playing for The Citadel occurred in 1985, but Buoniconti?s commitment has only grown. One look into the Hall of Famer?s eye and you realize the extent of the love he has for his son. Last Monday, millions were raised for the Miami Project research fund at the 27th Annual Great Sports Legends Dinner in NYC. The annual event has raised nearly $93 million overall.

DWEEB OF THE WEEK
ROGER GOODELL

For allowing the owners to strong-arm him into locking out the officials for four months in order to save a few bucks. The sheriff is skilled at keeping law and order in a league populated by thugs and creeps, but he ain?t that tough. After the Monday night fiasco in Seattle, Goodell went into hiding, refusing to face the music. The sheriff shouldn?t worry though, his media valets (the ones whose constant rap was ?he works for the owners?) will always be willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. Oh, what a lucky man.

DOUBLE TALK
What Roger Goodell said (about call ending Green Bay-Seattle game): ?....That?s the beauty of sports and the beauty of officiating. There are controversial calls and people see them differently. I understand that. That?s the beauty of sports.?

What Roger Goodell meant to say: ?Jerry Jones handed me that ?beauty? line. The replacements got the call wrong. The Packers got jobbed. The deal got done because of it.?

Investing in Real Estate is Investing in Yourself - Heroic Investing

Welcome! If this is your first time visiting Jason Hartman's website, please read this page to learn more about what we do here. You may also be interested in receiving updates from our blog via RSS or via email if you prefer. If you have any questions about first responder finance feel free to contact us anytime! Thanks!

A recent article in Entrepreneur magazine reported that there are over 10 million small and medium sized landlords in the United States. That number continues to grow as more and more public sector retirees search for ways to supplement whittled-down employer pension plans and protect themselves from economic downturns. As Jason Hartman recommends, investing in rental income property is also an investment in yourself, as you become not only a landlord, but also an entrepreneur ? an independent business owner.

What are the characteristics of a successful entrepreneur? In general, good entrepreneurs are like first responders ? self-motivated individuals who aren?t satisfied with the status quo. They want to be in control of their destinies and not at the mercy of others. They?re willing to try new strategies with the potential for better outcomes. And for retirees or those about to retire, becoming a real estate entrepreneur offers a way to take control of your financial future.

As Jason Hartman recommends, buying rental income real estate is the soundest possible investment. It?s an asset that will appreciate over time, with the potential for a stable and significant return over the lifetime of your ownership. Not only that, owning rental real estate puts you in charge, with no superiors to tell you how to manage your investment.

Within the limits of the Fair Housing Act and the local business and housing codes, you can decide how the property should look, who can live there, and how much rent to charge. You?ll be able to buy and sell properties as you choose, and establish your own schedule for maintenance and repair. You can decide what income level you want ? and plan accordingly.

When you?re getting ready to launch a real estate investing business, think of yourself as an entrepreneur from the beginning, and take steps to establish the business aspects of managing your investment. Some areas to consider include:

Consider investing in multiple properties in different areas. With good credit and the likelihood of consistent rental income to even out your debt-to-income ratio, you can most likely buy three or four rental properties of various kinds, optimally in different markets. This is a strategy Jason Hartman advocates, since it spreads the risk over a number of properties in case you run into problems in one area.

Establish a home office or space dedicated to your business. Although many entrepreneurs are reluctant to claim home office tax deductions for fear of triggering an audit, rental property ownership and management is a legitimate business with entirely appropriate exemptions for space, travel and other expenditures related to conducting the business of managing your property.

Maintain detailed records of all expenditures and related paperwork. As we?ve noted in previous posts on this topic, owning and managing rental property entitles you to a number of tax deductions related to repair, maintenance, travel, and hiring any contractors, managers, or other assistants you need. Documenting all these things and filing all receipts establishes you as a professional running a business.

Employer-provided pension plans, even in the public sector, are becoming increasingly vulnerable. But choosing real estate entrepreneurship puts you back in control of your financial future for a comfortable and stable income in retirement. ?(Top image: Flickr | MacEntee)

Infographic: Stephen Starr's Wine & Spirits Bill | Foobooz Philadelphia

Posted by Foobooz on September 27th, 2012

We?ve procured Pennsylvania Liquor Board sales information from 2011 and over the next few days we?ll be mining some of that data. Here?s how Stephen Starr?s empire breaks down. In 2011 the Starr organization bought more than $4.6 million in wine and spirits from the state of Pennsylvania. A little, surprising, Parc was the largest purchaser and accounted for 17% of the bill.

Asia stocks up after Spain pledges to cut spending

BANGKOK (AP) ? Asian stock markets rose Friday after Spain announced severe budget cuts meant to show international lenders and investors that the country is taking steps toward getting its debt under control.

The Spanish government on Thursday unveiled a draft budget for 2013 that cuts overall spending by ?40 billion ($51 billion). Wall Street spurted higher on the news. Many economists see the cost-cutting as a signal Spain is preparing to request financial aid from other governments and the European Central Bank.

Spain, whose banks have been hobbled by toxic assets, has so far been reluctant to ask for help because of the requirements that will likely be imposed in exchange for any aid.

Stocks were also helped by speculation that China's central bank will act soon to help the world's No. 2 economy.

Lorraine Tan, director at Standard & Poor's equity research in Singapore, said she believes the Chinese government is likely to introduce incentives to encourage domestic spending rather than making more money available for loans, as the U.S. Federal Reserve has done under its quantitative easing programs.

"Banks are indicating that they are not finding takers for loans," Tan said.

"The Chinese have a lot of flexibility ... the question is, they will only act on it if they think it will achieve something."

Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index rose 0.4 percent to 20,836.06. South Korea's Kospi added nearly 0.2 percent to 1,992.12 and Australia's S&P/ASX 200 gained 0.2 percent to 4,394.10. Benchmarks in Singapore, Taiwan, mainland China, Thailand and the Philippines also rose.

But Japan's Nikkei 225 index lost 0.8 percent to 8,876.77, sinking on a government report that showed industrial production fell a further 1.3 percent in August. Weak global and domestic demand is weighing on manufacturers, particularly electronics makers, who are facing intense competition from South Korean, Taiwanese and other Asian manufacturers.

The strong yen, which erodes overseas earnings and makes Japanese-made products relatively more expensive, is also eating into profits.

Major Japanese exporters got slammed. Toyota Motor Corp. fell 2.3 percent and Honda Motor Co. shed 2.7 percent. Ricoh Co. slid 3 percent.

Rising gold prices helped related shares. Hong Kong-listed Zijin Mining Co., China's largest gold miner, gained 2 percent. Australia's Newcrest Mining Ltd. jumped 3.8 percent.

Spain's budget announcement propelled Wall Street stocks to their first gain of the week, despite mixed data on the U.S. economy.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 0.5 percent to 13,485.97. The S&P 500 index rose 1 percent to 1,447.15. The Nasdaq composite index rose 1.4 percent to 3,136.60.

The U.S. government said the overall economy grew at a slower annual rate in the April-through-June quarter than it previously estimated. Companies cut orders for durable goods last month. But the number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits fell.

Benchmark oil for November delivery was up 49 cents to $92.34 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose $1.87 to finish at $91.85 on the Nymex on Thursday.

In currencies, the euro rose to $1.2932 from $1.2917 late Thursday in New York. The dollar fell to 77.50 yen from 77.62 yen.

CSN: Is Harper the best teen in MLB history?

September 27, 2012, 12:06 pm

? ?
PHILADELPHIA -- If it seems like Bryce Harper is accomplishing something every couple of days few, if any, teenagers have ever accomplished ... well, it's true.

Just about every positive thing Harper has done on the field in the last couple of weeks has carried the 19-year-old over a new threshold, further cemented his status as one of the best players in his age group ever to perform in the major leagues.

And Harper was up to his old tricks again last night during the Nationals' 8-4 win over the Phillies. Let's recap...

With his first-inning blast into the stands in deep left-center, Harper recorded his 20th home run. The only teenager ever to hit more, of course, was Tony Conigliaro for the 1964 Red Sox.

Asked about getting No. 20, Harper responded: "I like those 93 runs a lot better."

Ah, yes. By crossing the plate on his home run trot, Harper recorded his 93rd run of the season. The only teenager ever to score more runs: Buddy Lewis of the 1936 Senators, who finished with 100.

So, would reaching the century mark in runs scored mean something for Harper?

"Absolutely," he said. "Being on base for all the guys to drive me in, just being key in that respect and getting the momentum going early, doing things on the basepaths, I think that's huge."

Harper obviously takes a lot of pride in his baserunning, so surely he was fired up to notch his 17th stolen base last night. That makes him the first teenager ever in the 17-17 Club (17 homers, 17 steals). Three more stolen bases over the season's final seven games, and Harper obviously would become the first-ever teenager in the 20-20 club.

Pretty amazing stuff, right?

"No, nothing really amazes me with him," teammate Ian Desmond said. "Regardless of all the home runs, the great throws, things like that, he impacts the baseball game every single day, whether it's on the basepaths, everything. Nothing surprises me with him. I think he's got the brightest future, and he's a good kid. That makes it so much better."

Call Kurtis: My Engine Fried After Getting A Walmart Oil Change ...

A Roseville mom says her car broke down minutes after getting a Walmart oil change. When she realized they put oil in the transmission, she called Kurtis.

Walmart admitted the mistake, but weeks after the incident, she was still without the money to fix it.

Elizabeth Laird recalls the moment she knew something was wrong with her car. ?As I?m starting up the driveway I hear the old car noise which is ?duh duh duh duh duh.? And I thought, ?That?s not right, my car doesn?t make old car noise.??

Minutes after driving away from her Walmart oil change at the Roseville store, Laird says her 2008 Ford Edge was making terrible noises, so she returned.

?He finally turns to me and he says, ?I put the oil in the transmission,?? said Laird, ?I was borderline hysterical.?

The Ford dealership said her engine was ruined. They told her it would cost at least $7,500 to replace it. But Laird says Walmart, which admitted the mistake, initially refused to even get her a rental car.

?It was on day 12 that they finally authorized a rental vehicle for me,? said Laird.

Then at three weeks she says they told her they?d only give her $4,400 for a used engine. But that?s a big problem.

?That will kill my warranty. I will no longer have a warranty,? said Laird.

To keep an extended warranty like hers valid, Ford requires a more expensive Ford-certified used engine.

?Under no circumstances should she be forced to lose that warranty. That?s completely unacceptable,? said attorney Crystal Caldwell Virtue.

Caldwell Virtue says Walmart has a responsibility to make Laird?s car whole again.

?Walmart needs to put her in the position she would have been in, had this not occurred? as much as money is able to do so,? said Caldwell Virtue.

We contacted Walmart and reiterated Laird?s concerns.

?The lack of a sense of urgency is pretty telling about the way they feel about their customers and about the community,? said Laird.

But she says Walmart finally offered a settlement that should cover all the repairs. Walmart wouldn?t comment on its handling of this case. But Laird says it?s lost them a customer.

?It was shameful the way they treated me,? said Laird.

If you think a repair shop did something wrong to your car, you should complain to the state?s Bureau of Automotive Repair. Laird did and says they are investigating.

Facebook Marketing | Social Media Marketing - Online Advertising ...

Last updated 10 hours ago

As social media marketing grows, Facebook marketing also continues to gain speed, but is it working? Advertisers everywhere have tapped into the social networking giant, and have opted to participate in Facebook marketing?either through paid advertisements or simply just social networking between the brand and their consumers... or both.

The major red flag that comes with Facebook marketing, when an advertiser is using it for social media marketing purposes, is their inability to?truly develop buyers from simply followers. With Facebook marketing advertisers see a growth in their brand's following, but do those likes and followers really mean revenue for the business?

When it comes to Facebook marketing, like all social media marketing, brands can see significant results, they just need to ensure that they are using Facebook effectively to warrant such results. Via Facebook marketing you now have people following you and supporting your brand, but the most important thing to most marketers is making sure that such brand supporters purchase from their business.

Check out this article from Entrepreneur to help you with your Facebook marketing campaign and ensure revenue, not just followers. This article?provides insight?into "How to Convert Facebook Fans Into Paying Customers".

'Dirty USSD' code could automatically wipe your Samsung TouchWiz device (updated)

'Dirty USSD' code embed can reset your Samsung Galaxy S III and other TouchWiz devices

The Factory Reset. One of those last ditch efforts that many of us have a fair bit of experience with. However, a malicious embed code could potentially do the exact same thing to your Galaxy S III. The Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) code (which we won't reproduce here) apparently only works on Samsung phones running Touchwiz, and only if you are directed to the dodgy destination while inside the stock browser (rather than Chrome, for example). This means the Galaxy Nexus is unaffected, but it can work the same dark magic on the likes of the Galaxy S II.

We've been trying to murder a (UK-based) GS III here at Engadget, but with no luck as yet -- we can cause the malicious digits to appear in the dialer, but we can't force the stock browser to visit them as a URL, even when trying a bit of URL forwarding and QR code trickery. However, this particular GS III has been rooted in the past, even though it's now running an official TouchWiz ROM, and that may be interfering with the process.

Aside from our own experiences, the evidence for the vulnerability is certainly strong. It was demonstrated at the Ekoparty security conference last weekend, during which time presenter Ravi Borgaonkar also showed how a different code could even wipe your SIM card. See the video after the break for the evidence.

Update: Tweakers.net has been able to replicate the security hole on a Galaxy S Advance, while The Verge has confirmed that it works on both the Galaxy S II and the AT&T Galaxy S III. Samsung has told us it's looking into the issue.

The local unit of German automaker BMW booked a 41 percent increase in sales through the first eight months of the year, compared with the same period last year.

The director for corporate communications at BMW Indonesia, Helena Abidin, said the company sold 1,376 automobile units from January through August.

?The sales are a 41 percent increase from last year,? Helena said at the BMW booth of the Indonesia International Motor Show 2012 in Jakarta on Tuesday, as quoted by the Indonesian news portal tribunnews.com.

She explained that the BMW 5 Series sedan accounted for the most sales, namely 431 units, followed by the BMW 3 Series sedan at 415 units and the BMW X1, a sport utility vehicle, at 255 units.

To further boost its sales, BMW Indonesia launched two new sedan variants, the BMW 740Li and BMW M6 Coupe, during the IIMS, which is taking place from Sept. 20 to Sept. 30.

Helena said the company expected that sales would get an added lift from the IIMS.

AT&T Launches Mobile Security Solution for Businesses ...

AT&T today launched AT&T Mobile Security, a new mobile security and mobile enterprise management solution designed for businesses.

The solution is a available for other wireless carriers, so customers don't need to be an AT&T Wireless customer. It also supports multiple mobile platforms, and includes device-level security, application protection, mobile device management (MDM) capabilities, network-based security controls, and encrypted transport, the company said.?

AT&T Mobile SecurityThe core solution is powered by Juniper Networks? Junos Pulse, a managed SaaS service.

"Based on what we saw in the PC-based era, we know device-level protection alone is not enough to secure the mobile environment," said Ed Amoroso, Chief Security Offer, AT&T. "An effective approach to security must include network level visibility to detect threats before they reach the enterprise, so customers can confidently and safely take advantage of mobile solutions for their businesses."

With it?s new mobile security offering, AT&T's goal is to provide businesses with broad protection across wireless environments including device and network level threat detection, application controls, and secure mobile VPN.

AT&T's portfolio of security and mobile solutions now includes:

? AT&T Mobile Security ? Device protection, MDM, and mobile VPN powered by Juniper Networks? managed SaaS service, Junos Pulse, which protects mobile devices against data theft and loss, viruses, malware and malicious applications. AT&T network capabilities help enable secure access to enterprise assets through private and encrypted tunnels, while helping to protect against botnet infection, malicious websites, and data leakage.

? AT&T Toggle ? Integrated security and workspace management for BYOD. Provides visibility and control of the device in "work" mode, while maintaining privacy on the personal side of the device.

? Mobile Device Management (MDM) ? Device management capabilities including remote location, lock, wipe, backup, and restore services to decrease risks associated with lost or stolen devices. Customers have access to multiple options through AT&T Mobile Security or other AT&T MDM solutions.

? Mobile Application Management ? Application lifecycle management including cross platform application distribution through branded channels, administrative portals, and reporting tools.

? Mobility Solution Services ? Access to AT&T professional services to help design, build, support, and manage end-to-end mobile security solutions. Pricing for AT&T Mobile Security is based on factors including the number of devices and network security services selected by a customer.

"The addition of mobile security to [AT&T's] portfolio is a logical and appropriate next step to providing what today's businesses need for protecting their mobile environments,"?said Stacy Crook, Senior Analyst, Enterprise Mobility at IDC.?

Pricing structure includes a per seat option for the device client, and tiered plans for the network-based protection, with a minimum of 50 seats, an AT&T spokesperson told SecurityWeek. AT&T has plans to reduce the 50-seat minimum in the coming months, they said.

James T. Farrell on a Writer's Inner Life - WNYC

James T. Farrell, the creator of Studs Lonigan, is often thought of as a crude, dogged, naturalist writer; it's refreshing to hear the author speaking, in this recording from 1952, of what truly obsesses him: literature.

Speaking on the French Broadcasting System, Farrell?summarizes a speech he gave at the recent Masterpieces of the 20th Century Festival in Paris. Exemplifying the conference's CIA-sponsored anti-Communist theme, Farrell?states that the best condition for writing is "freedom."?

?Interestingly, he does not champion the Modernist concept of the writer as an individual isolated or alienated from the public as a whole. On the contrary, "the writer works out what comes and goes in the minds of other people." Even when at odds with the culture or the society, he is, in fact, experiencing what many others feel as well. "Thus the alienated poet does give expression to common feelings." He speaks of the revelation he had as a young man, working at a gas station, reading Sherwood Anderson's Tar, a semiautobiographical account of Anderson's Midwestern boyhood, and recognizing his own deep sense of bitterness and frustration, realizing that perhaps his emotions were important as well. For Farrell, "what literature, what culture does, is make life meaningful." Unlike some of the other speakers at the conference, Farrell is optimistic. He urges artists to keep up with the latest trends in science and technology. After taking the obligatory swipe at Russian totalitarianism, he states that "art and freedom will survive."

Farrell was born in Chicago in 1904. His parents were poor and the family large. At 3, he was sent to live with his grandparents. Farrell quickly immersed himself in the working class milieu of Chicago's South Side. In 1932 he published Young Lonigan, introducing readers to the protagonist of his trilogy, which would continue with The Young Manhood of Studs Lonigan (1934) and Judgment Day (1935). These books, with their unflinching look at the unsavory side of capitalism and their frank treatment of sex, created an immediate sensation. Looking back, The New York Times reported:

The three books had an enormous impact on the literary world of the 1930s: H.L. Mencken called Farrell "the best living American novelist" and many readers and critics were deeply moved by what they saw as the absolute honesty and realism of his account of Studs' boyhood, degradation, and untimely death.??

Farrell's disdain for "fine writing" was in tune with a country grappling with the mass unemployment and political upheaval caused by the Depression. He seemed to be recording just the facts, the unvarnished truth, in a flat style that implied man was largely helpless in the face of forces and events beyond his control. Although this view of his work fit in well with its time, Farrell himself fought against such a simplistic interpretation. As the website eNotes points out:

These novels established him as a leading practitioner of American naturalism, but it was a label that limited the recognition of his artistic achievements. Farrell himself took issue with the view of his work as imitative and rigidly deterministic, stating, "I've never been the economic determinist that critics have made me. ?I have a functional conception of environment and character; I don't believe in environment over character or anything like that." The issue of Farrell's determinism has remained a central critical debate. Those who disagree with this narrow categorizing of Farrell point to his literary criticism wherein he asserts that literature is a liberating force, allowing one to escape the social forces that threaten individual integrity; in his literary manifestos, Farrell emphasizes free will and the capacity for freedom, ideas which his supporters argue are amply illustrated through the achievements of his writer-characters who are stimulated to success by these same restrictive forces.

One could argue that the very vehemence with which he protests this view of his work in manifestos and criticism rather than in the novels and short stories themselves is a tacit admission that it does have some basis in fact. It was certainly an aesthetic that did not wear well as readers looked for a more nuanced view of plot and character than they found in his many subsequent books. But Farrell could not change. As grimly industrious as one of his proletarian characters, he wrote 25 novels and 17 collections of short stories, none of which sold nearly as well as the Lonigan trilogy. Roger Ebert, writing a 1968 profile of him in The Chicago Sun-Times, quotes him as saying:

"I have a lot of work to do. I write 20 hours at a stretch; I hate sleep and I fight it. I've slept seven hours in the last three days. If it kills me, that doesn't matter. I've already gained more time than I'll lose." ? His sentences follow one another like bricks in a well-made row. His prose is simple and direct, powerful and blunt. He has no use for the facile style of authors like John Updike. "See," he said, "I like to write. I've never had writer's block so much as a day in my life. If I block for an hour, that's a long time. I know what I want to write; my problem is to find time to get it all down."

There's something admirable, as well as horrific, in this picture of Farrell pounding away at his typewriter as if he were a chain gang inmate swinging his sledge hammer at a towering mountain of stone. Largely forgotten, his achievement may well find renewed appreciation in the future, when economic conditions more closely resemble those at the time of its inception. For now, what shines through in this talk and in his oeuvre is an overwhelming dedication, the sense of a life truly given over to art.

Farrell died in 1979, at age 75.

S.C. woman charged in crash that injured college baseball coach

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV)- A popular college baseball coach was critically injured after officials say he was involved in a crash along Interstate 77 in Charlotte on Tuesday night.

Thursday the hospital reports Dick Cooke is in good condition.

The N.C. Highway Patrol charged Brittany Alana Fitch, 27, of Clover, S.C. with driving while impaired, driving with license revoked and reckless driving.

The crash, which happened along Interstate 77 north near Interstate 485 and WT Harris Boulevard, sent at least two cars off the highway around 9:20 p.m. Tuesday night.

School officials say Davidson College baseball coach Dick Cooke was injured in the crash, which sent both vehicles into a wooded area. Cooke was reportedly struck from behind by Fitch.

Cooke's wife, Susan, described her husband's injuries.

"He's got some bleeding on his brain," the wife said. "But according to the scan, it's improving and he has cracked ribs, lung issues, a tube in his chest and his leg broken in four places."

MEDIC told WBTV News that they took two people to Carolinas Medical Center- Main to be treated for serious injuries.

Troopers said they suspect alcohol was involved in the crash. The investigation is ongoing.

The wife knows with alcohol involved the accident could have been much worse.

"I think we have been incredibly, incredibly lucky ," Ms. Cooke said. "So I am grateful."

Cooke, who lives in Davidson, has coached the Davidson Wildcats baseball program for 22 years. His wife says on the night of the accident the coach was heading home after visiting a baseball recruit.

Despite the serious injuries the wife reports her husband is almost back to normal.

"He was cracking jokes by yesterday afternoon," the wife said. "He was entertaining the nurses"

Members of Davidson's baseball team were also concerned. They are relieved to know their coach is expected to make a full recovery.

"You look in their eyes," Davidson College Athletics Director Jim Murphy said. "And they were very, very concerned - not sure what was next. So what we do is calm their fears and let them know they have a part in his recovery."

And that part to the coach's recovery is stepping up while Cooke is gone.

"The seniors are going to have to step up," Murphy said. "And they are going to be times when the players need to be coaches on the field, and I expect them to act maturely. They know what it takes to get ready to be successful and I want them to do it without being told."

In the summer of 2008, Cooke made his second appearance in the Olympics with Team USA baseball in Beijing, where he served as an auxiliary coach. He served as an auxiliary coach for Team USA at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia. They won a gold medal.

How to Opt Out of Facebook's Newest Attempts to Track Everything You Do, Even Offline [Facebook]

How to Opt Out of Facebook's Newest Attempts to Track Everything You Do, Even OfflineFacebook has started working with a data mining service to pair together your email address and other information stored on Facebook with advertising products to see what (and if) you're clicking on ads. Privacy advocates aren't too fond of this, but thankfully can you keep it from happening.

We've known that Facebook is already tracking your every move online, but the data Facebook is using now isn't just about browser cookies. Facebook is pairing what you buy offline with what you see online.

The Data Facebook is Collecting (and What They're Using it For)

How to Opt Out of Facebook's Newest Attempts to Track Everything You Do, Even OfflineAccording to the Financial Times, Facebook is now working with the data collection company Datalogix. Facebook's reasoning is that they need a system to provide marketers with more concrete data, and Datalogix has data from about 70 million households drawn from loyalty cards and similar programs.

On its end, Facebook matches the email addresses in Datalogix's systems, and compares that to an email address on Facebook. This effectively makes it so they can track if you see an ad on Facebook and then purchase it in a store.

Your data is automatically included in the advertising studies without your consent, and because of that, privacy groups are concerned. Talking with CNET, Jeff Chester, executive director of The Center for Digital Democracy expresses his concern:

I believe the FTC should be investigating all this as part of its review under the consent decree... Ad exchanges allow them to take this data and apply it in real-time and sell it to the highest bidder including Facebook. They are using reams of additional data, including from online, to target Facebook users

For its part, Facebook released this statement to The Verge:

We are working with Datalogix to help advertisers understand how well their Facebook ads are working. We also do this through our partnerships with companies like Nielsen and comScore and through our own advertising tool. We know that people share a lot of information on Facebook, and we have taken great care to make sure that we measure the effectiveness of Facebook ads without compromising the commitments we have made on privacy. We don't sell people's personal information, and individual user data is not shared between Facebook, Datalogix or advertisers.

Regardless of whether your personal data is making it across the tubes, you might want to keep your offline activity separate from your online activity. Thankfully, it's easy to opt out of Datalogix's collection.

How to Opt-Out from the Datalogix Collection

To opt-out of everything (including the Facebook comparison data) Datalogix is collecting, head to their Privacy page, scroll down to the "Choice" heading, click the last "click here" link in the paragraph, and fill in your information. This will opt you out of any and all data collection done by Datalogix.

You can also easily to opt out of Datalogix's cookie-based tracking by clicking this link. Like any cookie based advertising, you will have to opt-out on every computer and browser you use.

Keep Your Online and Offline Data Separate

How to Opt Out of Facebook's Newest Attempts to Track Everything You Do, Even OfflineAs we mentioned, the way this data collection works is that it compares your online data with offline shopping habits. So, the easiest solution to keep it from happening? Don't use the same phone number or email address on your Facebook account as you do when you sign up for loyalty or discount cards.

Stores rarely (if ever) follow up on making sure your loyalty card data is correct, so not using your real information isn't an issue. Otherwise, you can almost always use Jenny's number (867-5309) to get club discounts instead of handing over any personal information.

As for your online data, be sure to follow our guide to blocking Facebook cookies from distributing data to third party sites. Photo by Lisa Brewster.

Overwhelming Oregon claims No. 2 in AP Top 25, but No. 3 LSU, No. 4 Florida St make cases, too

Oregon was overwhelming and now the Ducks are No. 2 in the AP Top 25, jumping LSU to get in line behind No. 1 Alabama.

And No. 4 Florida State (1,340 points) is right behind the third-ranked Tigers (1,346).

A case could be made for all three as the second-best team in the country and the jockeying should continue for a while.

First, a quick recap: While LSU was slogging through a 12-10 victory at Auburn, Florida State was racing away from Clemson, 49-37 on Saturday night.

Oregon was last up and Ducks were at their breath-taking best against Arizona, beating the Wildcats 49-0 at Autzen Stadium. The Wildcats came into the game unbeaten and ranked No. 22.

The voters in the media poll were swayed. Oregon received 1,414 points.

Less than a month into the season, voters are still trying to sort through bits and pieces of evidence when determining the best teams. While most have played four games, some three, none have played that many truly meaningful games.

Oregon has outscored its opponents 211-73 but hasn't played a road game. LSU had been just as dominant at home before going to Auburn (1-3). LSU did play a Pac-12 team at home and beat Washington 41-3. How much better is Arizona than Washington? Fair question.

As for Florida State, the Seminoles also have yet to play outside their home stadium, and started the season with two games against FCS teams, including the sadly overmatched Savannah State.

So where is this going?

The Ducks finally hit the road this week, playing at Washington State on Saturday. The arrival of Mike Leach has folks pumped on the Palouse, but the Cougars just lost to previously winless Colorado. After that Oregon has Washington at home before a week off.

Florida State also has to pack its bags for the first time this week. The Seminoles play at South Florida, before getting back into the Atlantic Coast Conference with a road trip to North Carolina State.

LSU is back at home next week to face Towson, which should be a lot like Florida State playing Savannah State, before going to Florida. Beat the unbeaten Gators and the Tigers could easily get back whatever they have lost.

Conclusion: Lots still be learned.

___

MOVING UP

Bill Snyder is up to big things again in the Little Apple. No. 7 Kansas State moved up eight spots after beating Oklahoma 24-19 in Norman on Saturday night.

The architect of the Miracle in Manhattan has a top-10 team for the first time since September 2003, led by tough-running quarterback Collin Klein.

As always, there were plenty of people skeptical about the Wildcats coming into this season. They won 10 games in 2011, but eight came by a touchdown or less. Were they lucky or good.

Well, they've been awfully good again. Snyder has become a master at hiding his team's deficiencies. Klein and John Hubert give the Wildcats a powerful running game, and their deliberate pace helps keep a defense that has trouble defending the pass off the field.

Whether anybody else believes in K-State hardly matters. The Wildcats believe in themselves and their 72-year-old head coach.

"All wins are important, and when you play somebody as good as Oklahoma it means something special. But it's not like our players have never been there before. They had confidence going into the ballgame," Snyder said.

___

MOVING DOWN

While Snyder and the Wildcats celebrated, Bob Stoops and the Sooners were sent tumbling in the rankings, and left to explain another home loss.

"The players' attitude has been good," Stoops said. "There's no excuses about it. We have to do a better job as coaches to polish things and get things to be sharper and more precise."

Oklahoma went from No. 6 to No. 16 after falling to Kansas State at Owen Field, a place where the Sooners are 78-4 under Stoops, but have now lost games the past two seasons when they were ranked in the top 10.

Many Sooners fans are restless. The critics say Stoops, now in his 14th season in Norman, has become complacent. The record suggests otherwise. But the Sooners haven't won a national title since 2000, and don't stand above most of the Big 12 the way they used to.

____

IN AND OUT

No. 18 Oregon State, Rutgers and Baylor made their first appearances of the season in the Top 25 after winning on the road Saturday.

Oregon State went into UCLA and knocked off the Bruins 27-20 behind Sean Mannion's career-high 379 yards and two touchdowns. The loss dropped UCLA out of the rankings, somewhat surprisingly. The Bruins offense is in good hands with redshirt freshman quarterback Brett Hundley. Their defense needs work.

It's been a terrific and odd start to the season for the Beavers. Their first game with Nicholls State was postponed. They beat Wisconsin the next week in Corvallis, Ore., then had another week off. But the 2-0 start is huge for longtime coach Mike Riley, who is coming off consecutive losing seasons.

Along with UCLA, Michigan and Arizona exited the poll.

_____

FROM THE ARCHIVES

Another first for the SEC. The best football conference in the country became the first to have four of the top six teams in the AP rankings with No. 1 Alabama, No. 3 LSU, No. 5 Georgia and No. 6 South Carolina.

Six times previously one conference has had four of the top seven teams in the AP poll. The last time was 2009 when the SEC did it. In 2008, the Big 12 did it twice. Before that the Big Ten did it for a week in 1960 and twice in 1942.

____

ODDS AND ENDS

No. 10 Notre Dame is in the top 10 for the first time since 2006. Florida State has its best ranking since October 2005 and South Carolina checks in with its best ranking since 2006. ... A big game in the Big Ten seems like an oxymoron considering the uninspiring way the season has started for its teams. Conference play starts next week and No. 14 Ohio State hosts No. 20 Michigan State, with both teams coming off victories that had their coaches griping more than celebrating. ... The other game matching ranked teams next week is in Morgantown, W.Va., where No. 9 West Virginia plays Baylor in game could test the scoreboard keeper at Milan Puskar Stadium. The Bears are averaging 51 points, the Mountaineers 47.

Latest Trends and Procedures Of Cosmetic Surgery | Jackie's ...

    Related eBooks

Until the 1980s, most cosmetic surgeries were approached as multi-staged procedures done over a period of years. Middle-aged patients might have their eyelids done but would then be advised to defer a facelift until reaching their 60s. None of the ?rejuvenation procedures? that are popular today even existed, and complications were so feared that patients would often have surgery on only one side of the face at a time, with several weeks between procedures.

Past and Present Trends In Cosmetic Surgery

In recent years, there have been several major trends in cosmetic surgery. First, people are now having procedures done earlier, with whole-face rejuvenation done in multiple treatments. The second, even more dramatic trend is the use of high technology in cosmetic laser surgery, which is now performed in a surgeon?s own office or an outpatient surgery facility.

There are social and economic trends at work, not just medical ones. The pressures of commercial life, of working to older ages and of women in their 40s succeeding the professional world all contribute to the popularity of cosmetic surgery. And it is well established that personal image and looks play a powerful role in the careers of professional people. Doctors now understand that among the various motivations for having cosmetic surgery earlier in life is some people?s need to secure their social and professional status.

    Cosmetic Surgery Innovation

Clearly, it is not just the new technologies and procedures that are available that have changed the nature of cosmetic surgery. Greater knowledge about the human body and its construction (and its flexibility) has led to there being many, many proponents for the multiple procedure approach. Then, too, there is the matter of balance. Following facial rejuvenation, a patient?s face may look younger but other aspects of their physique and appearance may not match up.

On the other hand, a ?whole-body? approach considers the entire person in the equation, which is why another new trend is cosmetic surgeons relying on help from psychologists, make-up artists and image consultants in developing patient plans. In other words, cosmetic surgery is trending toward being a ?package deal? for the whole person.

As far as new procedures, there has been a great deal of change and progress in the use of ?injectables,? and not just the famous Botox injections for wrinkle elimination. Various kinds of injectables have been developed to sculpt the human body in various ways and in various places. Used as part of an overall rejuvenation or reconstruction plan, along with other ever-advancing procedures like dermabrasion and cosmetic laser surgery, injectables have become an important part of the plastic surgeon?s toolkit.

Other technologies and procedures are continually evolving. Newer, more powerful and more accurate lasers are being developed and manufactured all the time, and advances in many medical fields?metallurgy, anesthesia, antibiotics, etc.?are rapidly adopted where needed by cosmetic surgeons.

Cosmetic Laser Surgery: Right For You?

Another major trend is that doctors are now performing cosmetic laser surgery and other procedures outside of the hospital atmosphere. Some plastic surgeons have their own outpatient surgery facilities, while others band together to form partnerships for this purpose. Procedures have become safer with advances in medical technology and doctors have learned to reduce complications to a fraction of a percent of all procedures.

This trend toward outpatient procedures has some very powerful unseen advantages. Leaving the hospital out of the equation has numerous benefits, beginning with an economic one.

It is far less expensive for the patient, who may have to consider cosmetic surgery financing options if unable to pay up front, if there is no hospital stay. In addition, the presence of antibiotic-resistant infections in hospitals is a good reason to avoid them if at all possible.

One other recent trend has been the good press that cosmetic surgery has been getting, compared to the negative portrayals of yesteryear and the casting of patients as ?victims.? In fact, some doctors point to the television series ?Extreme Makeover? as a reflection of a new appreciation for cosmetic surgery. The fact that the program also shows ?everyday people? having these procedures, not just the Ivana Trumps of the world, is an indication of how cosmetic laser surgery and other life-enhancing procedures are considered not only acceptable, but affordable, as well.

Surgery Junkies: Wellness and Pathology in Cosmetic CultureSurgery Junkies: Wellness and Pathology in Cosmetic Culture"Surgery Junkies is an innovative, fast-paced mix of theory and empirical research that advances our understanding of contemporary bodies, lifestyle medicine, and the making of the embodied, self-fashioned self. Scholars and teachers of cultural and media studies, sociology of the body, and health and society will value its contributions to both their research and their teaching."-Arthur W. In this ground-breaking book, Victoria Pitts-Taylor examines why we consider some cosmetic surgeries to be acceptable or even beneficial and others to be unacceptable and possibly harmful. Drawing on years of research, in-depth interviews with surgeons and psychiatrists, analysis of newspaper articles, legal documents, and television shows, and her own personal experience with cosmetic surgery, Pitts-Taylor brings new perspectives to the promotion of "extreme" makeovers on television, the medicalization of "surgery addiction," the moral and political interrogation that many patients face, and feminist debates on the topic. Pitts-Taylor makes a compelling argument that the experience, meanings, and motivations for cosmetic surgery are highly social and, in doing so, provides a much needed "makeover" of our cultural understanding of cosmetic surgery.
