A new anti-windup design paradigm for control systems with actuator saturation was developed

Actuator saturation is ubiquitous in engineering systems. Anti-windup approach to dealing with actuator saturation has been receiving considerable attention from both the industry and the academic community during the past decades. Professor Zongli Lin and his student Xiongjun Wu developed a new anti-windup design paradigm that is capable of achieving significantly improved performances of the resulting closed-loop system. Their work, entitled "Design of multiple anti-windup loops for multiple activations," was published in SCIENCE CHINA Information Sciences, 55(9), 2012.

The traditional anti-windup scheme involves a single anti-windup loop designed for activation immediately at the occurrence of actuator saturation, regardless of the facts that the system might just experience occasional slight saturation rather than operate consistently under severe actuator saturation. Realizing that, by allowing the nominal controller to act unassisted in the event of slight or moderate saturation, the robustness property of the nominal closed-loop system will have the inherent ability to overcome the adverse effects of such slight or moderate saturation, Sajjadi-Kia and Jabbari recently initiated a line of work that exploits the benefit of delayed activation of anti-windup mechanism. In particular, they have shown that significant improvement on the closed-loop transient performance can be achieved if the anti-windup loop is designed for delayed activation instead of immediate activation, and that further improvement can be achieved if two anti-windup loops are designed simultaneously, one for immediate activation and the other for delayed activation.

Subsequently, Professor Lin and his student Xiongjun Wu examined the idea of activating the anti-windup mechanism in anticipation of actuator saturation and showed that the anti-windup compensators, both static and dynamic ones, designed for anticipatory activation, will lead to significantly better closed-loop transient performance than with the designs for delayed activation. In their current SCIENCE CHINA Information Sciences paper, they report their development of a new anti-windup design paradigm, referred to as the triple loop anti-windup design that includes three anti-windup loops, simultaneously designed for immediate, delayed and anticipatory activations (see Figure 1 below).

This new design paradigm results in a closed-loop system that outperforms closed-loops systems resulting from other design methods mentioned above. Shown in Figure 2 below is a comparison of the tracking ability of the closed-loop system under the triple loop anti-windup design with those of the closed-loop systems under an anti-windup loop designed for immediate activation, delayed activation or anticipatory activation, and under two anti-windup loops, simultaneously designed for delayed and immediate activations. Also shown in the figure for reference is the response of the nominal closed-loop in the absence of actuator saturation. It is clear from this comparison that the closed-loop system with the triple loop anti-windup design demonstrates significantly stronger ability to recover the nominal closed-loop performance in the absence of actuator saturation.

More 'happy talk' rules from DISD to employees | Opinion Blog

Apparently, Dallas ISD teachers received a notice yesterday, which they are required to acknowledge receipt of, essentially advising them that their First Amendment rights do not apply whenever their online discussion involves DISD. They are not to post blog items or converse online, either via DISD accounts or personal accounts, in any way that disparages the district. In other words, you can sing the praises of the district and its new administration. But you may not criticize it. In fact, you may not even discuss district business. Period.

The district reserves the right to block teachers from viewing the very words I?m writing now if some officials decide that what I?m writing is detrimental to DISD.

Nothing I can find in this directive excuses the Board of Trustees from the policy, so Carla Ranger might want to rethink some of her blog items. And by the way, speaking the truth doesn?t appear to be a defense in this policy.

This comes fresh on the heels of the administration?s previous ?happy talk? initiative?this month when it asked principals to recruit teachers to write glowing letters about the revolutionary changes now being instituted. That initiative included suggested wording that principals could put into the mouths of the teachers, even though the administration acknowledges openly that DISD teachers right now are not exactly at a high point in terms of morale.

The fact is, teachers are grumbling loudly about the way they?re being treated. And they are speaking out in emails and on blogs, including this one. The volume of their complaints apparently doesn?t sit well with the administration. Rather than listen and learn from the complaints and, perhaps, consider a more productive change in course, the administration instead wants them just to shut up. And so, yesterday, it sent out the following orders:

?a. Limited and occasional use of the District?s systems to engage in blogging is acceptable if authorized, provided that it is done in a professional and responsible manner, does not otherwise violate the District?s policy, is not detrimental to the District?s best interests, and does not interfere with an employee?s regular work duties.??The District reserves the right to block access to these or other Web sites.

?b. Blogging by employees, whether using the District?s property and systems or personal computer systems, is also subject to the terms and restrictions set forth in this regulation.??Blogging from the District?s systems is also subject to monitoring.

?c. Users are also prohibited from discussing specific District business within any personal home pages they may have established on these sites outside of District business hours.

?d. The District?s Data Classification and Retention Regulation also applies to blogging.??As such, employees are prohibited from revealing any District confidential or proprietary information, trade secrets, or any other material covered by the District?s Data Classification and Retention Regulation when engaged in blogging.

?e. Employees will not engage in any blogging that may harm or tarnish the image, reputation, and/or goodwill of the District and/or any of its employees.??Employees are also prohibited from making any discriminatory, disparaging, defamatory, or harassing comments when blogging or otherwise engaging in any conduct prohibited by the District?s Nondiscrimination and Anti-Harassment policy.

?f. Employees may also not attribute personal statements, opinions, or beliefs to the District when engaged in blogging.??If an employee is expressing his or her beliefs and/or opinions in blogs, the employee may not, expressly or implicitly, represent him or herself as an employee or representative of the District.??Employees assume any and all risk associated with blogging.

?Apart from following all laws pertaining to the handling and disclosure of copyrighted or export-controlled materials, the District?s trademarks, logos, and any other District intellectual property may also not be used in connection with any blogging.?

I would divulge the source of this information, but doing so might put the DISD employee at risk of punishment under paragraph ?e? because the mere fact that the district has issued this sweeping directive absolutely tarnishes and disparages the image of the officials who came up with it.

What is the most common aspect when comparing cultures? Yes, the delicious differences of food. Let us take a glance into the aspects inside and out of Italian cuisine.

The smell of fresh pasta, wine, and Florentine steak fills the air as you walk through the streets of Florence, Italy. On every corner there is a sandwich shop, restaurant or bar to fill your fix of all tradition and non-traditional dishes. But, what makes Italy so different from any other place? The Italian food culture is completely different in every aspect to the United States; some examples are those of; times of eating, service, types of meals and the billing procedure.

In comparisons to the American culture, Italians eat their dinner quite late. The earliest dinnertime is around 7:00 in the evening.? Most restaurants don?t even open their doors until this time.? There is also a ?deal? that some restaurants put together called ?aperitivo?. Compared to the American culture, this would be ?Happy Hour?. In the Italian culture, they add a buffet of finger foods for you when you purchase a drink, for about seven euro a person. I recommend experiencing this evening event. In the Italian culture, it is a fun way to eat a lot, enjoy Italian company, and kick back and relax. ?Some hot spots in the city are Kitsch, Moyo, Zoe, and Rex Caf?.

If you are looking for a more traditional style of meal, going to a restaurant and ordering off the menu is always an option. When ordering beverages getting a soda isn?t as common as it would be in the United States. Wine or water is the normal table drink. Not all wines are a-custom to the dinner table however. The house red or house white is always a delicious taste with your dinner. Don?t order sweet wines such as moscato, save those for dessert! In Italy, the meals are separated into different courses.? When ordering, you asked for all your courses at once. So start with the appetizer and order through your second course at once. Starting off you dinner with first the appetizer, known as antipasti. These dishes are normally light such as caprese, bruschetta, or prosciutto e melone. The primo (first course) is anything that doesn?t have meat.? The pasta dishes or soups are always a good choice. Your secondi (second course) are your meat dishes. This would include the famous Florentine steak, seafood, chicken and so on.? See the difference between Italian and American ordering styles? Everything is ordered and priced separately.

Along with this, it is also eaten separately.? The dishes come out as they are prepared to eat and in order of sequence of the course you order. ?I?ve learned by meeting Italian friends and going out to dinner with them that it is customary and polite to wait for your entire table to receive their dishes before beginning to eat.

Another difference that you may want to take note of is the payment process. In the Italian culture when out in large groups, make sure you have money to collect as a table. The restaurant will ring your bill up on one tab. Before you worry about getting the bill paid for, remember to flag down your waiter or waitress to tell them you are ready for your check.

Lastly before you leave from your meal, Americans always seem to ask amongst them-selves, ?Do I tip?? They answer to that is ?as you wish?. For most restaurants there is what is called a ?service charge?. This is normally about the price you would tip your waiters at home so no, it is not. However, if you believe your service was wonderful you are always more than welcome and the servers are more than happy for you to recognize them by leaving a little extra.

Cuisine is an interesting way to learn the culture and try something new. Don?t be afraid to point to something on the menu and have that for dinner. Be courageous with your taste buds. Chances are likely that whatever you order will be delicious!

'National security risk': Far-right leader pushes Hungary to draw up ...

BUDAPEST,?Hungary?-- A Hungarian far-right politician urged the government to draw up a list of Jews who pose a "national security risk", stirring outrage among Jewish leaders who saw echoes of fascist policies that led to the Holocaust.

Marton Gyongyosi, a leader of Hungary's third-strongest political party Jobbik, said the list was necessary because of heightened tensions following the brief conflict in Gaza and should include members of parliament.

Opponents have condemned frequent anti-Semitic slurs and tough rhetoric against the Roma minority by Gyongyosi's party as populist point scoring ahead of elections in 2014.

Jobbik has never called publicly for lists of Jews.

"I am a Holocaust survivor," said Gusztav Zoltai, executive director of the Hungarian Jewish Congregations' Association. "For people like me this generates raw fear, even though it is clear that this only serves political ends. This is the shame of Europe, the shame of the world."

Between 500,000 and 600,000 Hungarian Jews died in the Holocaust, according to the Holocaust Memorial?Center?in Budapest. According to some accounts, one in three Jews killed in Auschwitz were Hungarian nationals.

Gyongyosi's call came after Foreign Ministry State Secretary Zsolt Nemeth said Budapest favored a peaceful solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as benefiting both Israelis with Hungarian ancestry, Hungarian Jews and Palestinians in Hungary.

Gyongyosi, who leads Jobbik's foreign policy cabinet, told Parliament: "I know how many people with Hungarian ancestry live in Israel, and how many Israeli Jews live in Hungary," according to a video posted on Jobbik's website late on Monday.

"I think such a conflict makes it timely to tally up people of Jewish ancestry who live here, especially in the Hungarian Parliament and the Hungarian government, who, indeed, pose a national security risk to Hungary."

Gyongyosi apologizes
Gyongyosi, 35, is the son of a diplomat who grew up mostly in the Middle East and Asia -- Egypt, Iraq, Afghanistan and India -- and whose office is decorated by Iranian and Turkish souvenirs. He graduated with a degree in business and political science from Trinity College in Dublin in 2000.

He worked for four years at the Dublin office of KPMG, then returned to Budapest in 2005. He has been active in Jobbik since 2006 and became their representative in parliament in 2010.

The government condemned the remarks.

"The government strictly rejects extremist, racist, anti-Semitic voices of any kind and does everything to suppress such voices," the government spokesman's office said.

Laszlo Kover, the Speaker of parliament, who is from the ruling Fidesz party, also issued a statement on Tuesday in which he called for a tightening of house rules that would allow a sanctioning of such behavior.

Gyongyosi tried to play down his comments on Tuesday, saying he was referring to citizens with dual Israeli-Hungarian citizenship.

"I apologize to my Jewish compatriots for my declarations that could be misunderstood," he said on Jobbik's website.

He later told a news conference that he would not resign and considered the matter "closed," national news agency MTI reported.

King maker?
Jobbik's anti-Semitic discourse often evokes a centuries-old blood libel - the accusation that Jews used Christians' blood in religious rituals.

"Jobbik has moved from representing medieval superstition (of the blood libel) to openly Nazi ideologies," wrote Slomo Koves, chief rabbi of the Unified Hungarian Jewish Congregation.

Jobbik registered as a political party in 2003, and gained increasing influence as it radicalized gradually, vilifying Jews and the country's 700,000 Roma.

The group gained notoriety after founding the Hungarian Guard, an unarmed vigilante group reminiscent of World War Two-era far-right groups. It entered Parliament at the 2010 elections and holds 44 of 386 seats.

The center-right government of Prime Minister Viktor Orban has struggled to pull Hungary out of recession as many European countries suffer from an economic crisis.

Orban's Fidesz has lost more than a million voters since 2010, even though it is still the strongest political force.

More than half of Hungary's electorate is undecided and having retained its voter base, some analysts say Jobbik could hold the balance of power in the 2014 elections between Fidesz and the fragmented left-wing opposition.

VANCOUVER ? A 2010 Statistics Canada survey found 64 out of 100 Canadians age 16 years or older searched the Internet for medical and health related information. Usage in United States is even higher; a 2011 survey found eight out of 10 Americans go online for health and medical reasons. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently estimated 17,828 health and fitness apps and 14,558 medical apps are currently available for mobile phones. These statistics illustrate how modern electronic technologies such as smart phones and tablets, coupled with social media and the Internet, are rapidly changing how the general public is seeking health information and services.

EHealth ? the use of modern electronic technologies to access health information and services ? has clearly shown health benefits. For example, citizens living in rural and remote parts of our province and country can consult nurses, doctors, or specialists online if they are not in the same communities where they live. People use text messaging to quit smoking or remind them to take medications. Family members use video conferencing to virtually visit their loved ones being treated in hospitals miles away from their own communities. High school students program smartphone apps to help detect falls of the elderly and automatically email or text for help if necessary.

These are but a few innovative examples of how eHealth can help us take care of ourselves and receive health services online. However, eHealth is still far from being a routine part of our health system. While we now regularly use the Internet and our mobile phones for banking, travel, or accessing government services, how many of us can make doctors or hospital appointments, find our own test results, or talk to health professionals about our health concerns online, safely and securely? Surveys on eHealth point to these types of activities as those many would like to have but don?t regularly yet. How long will it take before we can count on these and other eHealth innovations being available for us to use routinely, safely, and in a cost-effective way?

Thanks to governments, hospitals, health professionals and technology companies, eHealth is making progress. For example, Canada Health Infoway, the federal government-funded organization charged with ensuring Canadians have access to secure and useful electronic health records, has been actively working with all the provinces and territories to set national eHealth standards, and raise awareness of eHealth with the general public. Provincial governments and health authorities are investing in technology infrastructures and setting policies to guide the implementation of eHealth. Educational organizations such as the UBC Faculty of Medicine are helping health professionals to learn more about eHealth and use it in practice with their patients. Active research is also happening to refine existing ways and imagine new approaches to use modern technologies for health and treatment improvement for our citizens.

Meanwhile, what can you do to bring eHealth benefits to yourself and your loved ones? I would suggest four immediate steps for you to get involved:

1. Commit to be an active health consumer: Take an active interest in your own health and go online to find information that is of interest and can be useful to you. For example, try to find at least one app to start thinking about how you can use it to help you achieve wellness and better health. Go to Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, or social media sites to look for information and participate in discussions. Lots of health information is out there waiting for you to discover.

2. Get to know the new technologies and use them for health: Knowing where treasures are buried, we need to have tools to dig them out. Learn to use social media, SMS and smart-phone apps and use these skills to search for health information that is relevant to you and your loved ones.

3. Think of eHealth ways to help you help yourself: Just imagine for a minute, what do you need right now to improve your health? Exercising more? Losing a few pounds? Knowing how your blood pressure and heart rate are doing or how well you are sleeping at night? Once you have an idea, check out if ?there?s an app for that.? Very likely you will find someone else has already thought of it and developed something for you to use. If there isn?t, you may have uncovered a super idea that is worth exploring further with others.

4. Work with your health professionals to ensure safety and accuracy: While valuable health resources can be found online, you need to make sure they are accurate and suitable for you. Make sure you determine with your own doctor, nurse, pharmacist, or trusted health professional first if the information is helpful or harmful to you, especially if it involves taking pills or supplements, or doing unusual or even extreme activities.

In Canada, we are blessed with excellent electronic infrastructure and technologies for us to stay connected, and a great health system to support our health. Current and future developments in eHealth require partnerships and participation of policy-makers, health professionals, industry and citizens like yourselves who are familiar with and want to use eHealth.

When it comes to getting to know eHealth, think of Steve Jobs? two famous mottoes: ?Stay hungry, stay foolish.? Hungry for health information and apps that can help you live healthier lives and manage your illnesses better; foolish to keep asking questions and learning about your own body in partnership with your health professionals. And, ?Think different.? Keep thinking how can eHealth help me achieve better health?

Cuomo likens Katrina, Sandy as damage total soars

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) ? New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo declared Superstorm Sandy in some ways worse than 2005's Hurricane Katrina as he said his state would need $42 billion to recover from the damage wreaked in late October and prevent future catastrophe.

The figure includes more than $32 billion for damage and restoration and an additional $9 billion to head off damage in future storms, including steps to protect the power grid and cellphone network.

As he and other political leaders in his state conferred on how much federal aid to seek, he said New York taxpayers can't foot the bill.

"It would incapacitate the state," he said at a news conference Monday. "Tax increases are always a last, last, last resort."

Comparisons of Sandy to Katrina, which swamped New Orleans and the Gulf Coast in 2005, put the East Coast's recovery "in focus," he declared, saying Sandy hit a more densely populated region and caused more costly damage than Katrina.

Katrina killed more than 1,800 people, flooded nearly the entire city of New Orleans and caused some $108 billion in damage. Sandy killed more than 100 as it swamped coastal areas, toppled trees and dumped snow inland, and the most recent estimates indicate damage totaling more than $62 billion in several Eastern states, with New York and New Jersey accounting for the lion's share.

Previous estimates, which often fluctuated, had put Sandy's damage at around $50 billion. That already made it the second most destructive U.S. storm in history, after Katrina.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who announced Monday that he couldn't abandon the state during its recovery and would seek re-election next year, has put the preliminary damage estimate in his state at $29.5 billion.

Hard times were already facing the state and city governments that were staring at deficits of more than $1 billion before Sandy hit in late October. State tax receipts have also missed projections, showing a continued slow recovery from a recession that could hit taxpayers in the governments' budgets this spring. And there's the looming fiscal cliff, the combination of expiring federal tax cuts and major spending cuts that could rattle the economy.

"Make no mistake, this will not be an easy task, particularly given the impending fiscal cliff, and a Congress that has been much less friendly to disaster relief than in the past," said Sen. Charles Schumer, a powerful New York Democrat.

"We will work with the (Obama) administration on supplemental legislation, to be introduced in the upcoming December session of Congress, that will set us on the road to meeting New York's needs," he said. "This will be an effort that lasts not weeks, but many months, and we will not rest until the federal response meets New York's deep and extensive needs."

CHICAGO (AP) ? Gov. Pat Quinn is encouraging shoppers to support Illinois? more than 1.1 million small businesses.

In a press release, the governor called small businesses ?the backbone of the state?s economy? and proclaimed it ?Small Business Saturday.?

According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, there are about 28 million small businesses nationwide. Those businesses have created 65 percent of the new jobs over the past two decades.

The 3/50 Project, a small business advocacy group, says for every $100 spent in independent, locally-owned stores, $68 is returned to the local community.

The day falls between two of the busiest shopping days of the year ? the day after Thanksgiving, known as Black Friday, and Cyber Monday, when workers return to work and use their computers to snag deals online.

ETA calls for talks over "definitive end" with Spain, France

MADRID (Reuters) - Basque separatist group ETA said on Saturday it wanted talks with the Spanish and French governments to negotiate a definitive end to military operations and a handover of its arms.

Basque newspaper Naiz published an advance summary of an ETA statement, which said the group wanted talks over the return of ETA prisoners to the northern Basque region, an end to its military structure, and a full disarmament. The paper said the full statement would be published on Sunday.

ETA said in the statement that successful talks over those three areas "would bring about a definitive end of the armed conflict".

Just over a year ago ETA announced an end to a four-decade armed struggle for independence in which more than 800 people were killed, but did not fully end operations, nor turn over its weapons. ETA has broken ceasefires in the past.

Spain's Interior Ministry could not be immediately reached for comment on Saturday.

The government has repeatedly said it would not negotiate with ETA, and has called on the group to disarm and disband.

ETA said in the statement that it would listen to proposals from both the Spanish and French governments over an end to the conflict.

The group has lost support in the Basque Country and been crippled by numerous arrests and discoveries of arms caches in recent years, mostly in Spain and France.

Earlier this month British police arrested a suspected ETA member in Liverpool linked to several murders, while its military head was arrested in France in October.

The statement came four days after discussions were held between Basque political parties, labor unions, the Catholic Church, and French Socialists in the northern Spanish city of San Sebastian. After that meeting the groups said an end to ETA was close.

Suh's left cleat hits QB Schaub below the belt

DETROIT (AP) ? The left cleat of Detroit Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh connected with Houston Texans quarterback Matt Schaub in his groin area in their Thanksgiving game.

It wasn't clear on replays Thursday whether it was intentional.

"I really don't have anything to say about that play or that person," Schaub said.

Suh was on his chest, taken down by an offensive lineman, when he extended his left foot below Schaub's belt. Suh didn't talk to reporters after the game.

Last year on Thanksgiving, Suh was ejected for stomping on the right arm of Green Bay offensive lineman Evan Dietrich-Smith and was suspended for two games.

Suh has been fined in previous seasons for roughing up quarterbacks: Cincinnati's Andy Dalton, Chicago's Jay Cutler and Cleveland's Jake Delhomme.

Benitez coy on long-term prospects at Chelsea

LONDON (AP) -Rafael Benitez is being coy about his chances of staying at Chelsea beyond the end of the season, insisting Thursday that his main ambitions as interim coach were to "win trophies and play good football."

The 52-year-old Spaniard was hired by the European champions on a seven-month contract Wednesday following the abrupt firing of Roberto Di Matteo.

Many believe Benitez is merely a short-term fix ahead of the likely hiring next summer of Pep Guardiola, the reported No.1 target of Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich.

Benitez says "I don't care about the short-term (deal), what I have in my head is to win every game . we will see what happens."

Benitez says he has landed the "perfect" job but hasn't yet spoken to Abramovich.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) ? It took only 52 seconds for the New England Patriots to turn this into a laugher.

That's how long it took to score three touchdowns in the second quarter and thoroughly embarrass the bumbling New York Jets 49-19 on Thursday night.

Even Bill Belichick couldn't compare what he watched to any other regular-season game in which he has coached.

"I was unfortunately on the other side of that in a Pro Bowl where they scored on a fumble, then an interception," Belichick said. "It doesn't take a lot to score like that ? defensive touchdowns, special teams, they can add up in a hurry.

"Nothing surprises me in the NFL."

Tom Brady threw three touchdown passes and ran for a score as the Patriots (8-3) took advantage of five turnovers and used a 35-point second quarter to cruise past the Jets (4-7).

"It was a great job coming in on a short week against a team that knows us really well," Brady said, "and playing all four quarters."

It was a scoreless opening period, but the Patriots then went on a touchdown spree despite holding the ball for only 2:14 as the Jets kept giving the ball away. New England's 35 second-quarter points tied for the fourth-most in a quarter in NFL history.

Disgusted Jets fans were chanting for Tim Tebow to play before the second quarter of this Thanksgiving showdown was over, and booing as the team left the MetLife Stadium field at halftime.

"Shoot, I don't blame them for booing," Jets coach Rex Ryan said.

New England, which beat Indianapolis 59-24 on Sunday, scored four touchdowns in just over 6 minutes ? including three in a jaw-dropping 52-second span ? helping Belichick become the eighth coach in NFL history with 200 career victories, including the playoffs.

"There's no coach I'd ever want to play for than him," Brady said.

Julian Edelman returned a fumble for a touchdown and caught a 56-yard pass for a score before leaving with a head injury. Wes Welker and Shane Vereen had touchdown catches, Steve Gregory returned a fumble for a score, and Stevan Ridley ran for a touchdown as New England set a franchise record with 108 points in a two-game stretch.

The Patriots improved to 19-0 in the second half of the season since 2010. They were 8-0 that year and last year, and are 3-0 this season after the midway point.

"It all happened so fast," Patriots linebacker Jerod Mayo said. "I've never been part of anything like that, but I'm glad that we were on the right side of it."

Meanwhile, the Jets allowed their most points since giving up 52 to Miami in the 1995 season opener, and will likely have to win their remaining five games to even have an outside chance at the postseason.

"Discouraged? Of course," Ryan said. "I'll put it to you this way: We're about as wounded as you possibly can be, but we're not dead."

New England was without star tight end Rob Gronkowski, out a few weeks after breaking his left forearm against Indianapolis. It didn't need him ? not with the Jets fumbling and bumbling around.

Brady finished 18 of 28 for 323 yards before leaving with 2 minutes left in the game. He reached 3,000 yards passing for the 10th time, becoming one of six players to accomplish the feat. He also passed Dan Fouts for 10th place on the career passing list.

Tight end Aaron Hernandez returned after missing three games with a sprained ankle and had two catches for 36 yards.

New York's Mark Sanchez was 26 of 36 for 301 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Tebow didn't play at all ? revealing after the game that he has two broken ribs ? and stood on the sideline with a cap on throughout despite the occasional chants for him to get some snaps.

It looked as though this one might be a close one as both teams missed opportunities to score in the opening quarter, including Stephen Gostkowski going wide left on a 39-yard field goal attempt for New England. The Jets were hoping to boost their playoff hopes and keep some momentum going after a 27-13 victory at St. Louis last Sunday that snapped a three-game skid.

But this one got ugly in a hurry.

"That was crazy," Sanchez said. "I've never seen anything like that. This is a team you can't turn the ball over against because they make you pay. That was a great display of that today."

The Patriots jumped on a poor decision by Sanchez, who ruined a nice drive by keying in on Jeremy Kerley on second-and-6 from the 23. Gregory read the play the whole way for an easy interception.

Brady then led the Patriots on a 15-play, 84-yard drive that was capped by Welker's 3-yard touchdown catch on the first play of the second quarter.

New England was helped by a questionable neutral-zone infraction by Muhammad Wilkerson on third-and-4 from the Jets 49, and a facemask penalty on Ellis Lankster on second-and-10 from the 32 that gave the Patriots the ball at the 9.

The Jets made another costly mistake on their next possession when Shonn Greene fumbled on fourth-and-inches from the Patriots 31 and Gregory recovered.

Brady threw a swing pass on first down to Vereen, who zipped down the left sideline untouched for an 83-yard touchdown that made it 14-0 with 9:43 remaining in the opening half.

The Patriots were back in the end zone moments later when Sanchez fumbled on second down as he fell when right guard Brandon Moore's backside slammed into him. Gregory picked up the ball and ran it 32 yards for a score to put New England up 21-0.

And, the Patriots weren't done.

Joe McKnight, one of the league's top returners, fumbled the ensuing kickoff on a hit by Devin McCourty. Edelman grabbed the ball out of the air and scooted 22 yards for yet another score.

"That was quick," Patriots defensive end Rob Ninkovich said. "They were some of the quickest scores I've ever seen on any level. As a defense, that's a good sign, when we're putting good pressure on the ball. It then means something when the offense capitalizes on the mistakes we caused."

Edelman caught a 56-yard pass from Brady to make it 35-0 with 3:08 left in the first half. The receiver left the game early in the third quarter on a helmet-to-helmet hit by LaRon Landry on an end-around during which he fumbled. Belichick would say only "we'll see," when asked about Edelman's injury.

NOTES: Jets WR Clyde Gates also left with a head injury in the second quarter after a hard hit from Kyle Arrington. ... Ridley was called for a chop block in the end zone midway through the third quarter, giving the Jets a safety. ... Jets players ran out of the tunnel together, and first responders for Superstorm Sandy were introduced as a group before the game. Staten Island's Filipowicz family served as honorary captains for the Jets. John K. Filipowicz and his son, John C. Filipowicz, were killed in the storm.
