The importance of family planning | Family.com.my

Family planning is crucial as it educates young people particularly minor about pregnancy and the consequences due to unwanted pregnancy. Raising a child is harder than you think. Of course, besides financial stability, couples must also ensure a suitable home environment to bring up a kid. One small mistake can change your future and affect a person?s life.

Family planning requires mutual agreement between partners and that means, men must support and participate during decision-making processes. In other words, men must attend pre-natal classes and learn everything to raise a child. Instead of burdening their wives to handle everything in a child?s life, husbands should take control and work together with their wives.

Family planning is always important to avoid unwanted pregnancies. Bear in mind that unwanted pregnancies may lead to abortion and perhaps, may even affect a person?s mental health. Abortion is damaging women as the surgery can cause convulsion, heart attack and even death. In addition to that, unwanted pregnancies especially among teens also lead to other bigger and more serious issues such as unsafe abortions with unregistered medical practitioner and abandoned babies.

Take Malaysia as an example. The number of abandoned babies are rising due to unplanned pregnancies. As these minors are unprepared to raise a child due to various reasons, with no other options left, they can only abandon the infants. Well, one person?s pleasure is another person?s mistake. When the couples engaged in a sexually active relationship, they fail to realize the impact of unplanned pregnancies. This is when family planning comes in handy.

Individuals must take consider family planning as a serious matter and be responsible of their choices. Babies should be conceived by choice and not by chance. Therefore, couples must be well-prepared financially and emotionally before the baby is born. All in all, partners should decide the right timing and spacing to conceive a child to ensure that the baby is raised in a healthy manner with suitable home environment.

Looking For A Legitimate Work From Home Business Opportunity?

Looking for A Legitimate Work From Home Business Opportunity?

Have you searched the internet for a legitimate work from home business opportunity? There is one home business opportunity that is safe and has a proven track record. You don?t need a huge investment to start this and since you are working for yourself, you don?t need to worry that you are being taken for a ride. This work from home business is called Affiliate Marketing.

What is Affiliate Marketing?

Affiliate Marketing is setting up websites that provide a service for people looking for products. Your site offers products from various vendors and the vendors will pay you a commission based on the sales that you drive to their site. This is similar to the old sales forces like Kirby or Fuller Brush. The only difference is that you are online with your offer.

How do you get Paid?

The vendors will typically belong to a network that takes care of tracking your sales and directing the commissions to the correct place. Many of the Affiliate networks will pay by check but most will provide a payment directly to a PayPal account. PayPal is secure and is available in many countries throughout the world.

Where can I find an Affiliate network?

The largest affiliate network in the US is Amazon. A huge percentage of Amazon?s sales are generated by affiliates to their program. Unfortunately, due to some rather restrictive laws, Amazon will not allow affiliates to work from some states. This is not a huge problem as other networks are available that will allow affiliates to work from their states. Commission Junction is another that does allow businesses to operate in any location. This is set up a bit differently than Amazon in that the vendors sign up with CJ and you contact them through the network to promote their products directly. Commissions at CJ are typically higher than Amazon as well.

How do you promote a product on the Internet?

The first thing you need to provide for your readers is good solid content on your chosen topic. This isn?t as hard as you may think. All you need to do is pretend that you are talking to a friend about your topic or idea. You can certainly have a good conversation can?t you? Pretend that your friend is asking about your stuff. What would they ask, what would you tell them. Easy as that. Write it down.

Eventually, when you have lots of information on your site you will want to dress it up a bit. Find some compelling pictures to accompany your information. If it is funny or cute all the better. Give people a bit of a laugh if you can. This will get them in a better mood and make them more receptive to your information.

To get your website read on the internet it needs to have a good ranking in the search engines. The largest search engines are Google, Bing and Yahoo. Each will rank your site with the terms that you use in your writing. Using terms that have high search volume and low competition will help you to rank. There is a whole discipline called SEO (Search Engine Optimization) that will allow you to rank more easily. It is not hard to learn and there are quite a few places that will do this for you or even teach you to do SEO for your own site.

Make sure that you give Affiliate Marketing a look if you are looking for a legitimate work from home opportunity. It will provide you with an income with unlimited potential and a way to work on your own schedule. It takes discipline to run your own business, it also takes time to get your business up and running. It can however fill your needs and dreams.

At 6 months, development of children with autism like those without

Tuesday, October 30, 2012

The development of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is much like that of children without ASD at 6 months of age, but differs afterwards. That's the main finding of the largest prospective, longitudinal study to date comparing children with early and later diagnosis of ASD with children without ASD. The study appears in the journal Child Development and has implications for clinical work, public health, and policy.

The study was conducted by researchers at the Kennedy Krieger Institute, the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and the Aging Brain Center at the Institute for Aging Research and Hebrew SeniorLife at Harvard Medical School.

The study sought to learn more about the patterns of development during the first three years of life in children with and without ASD to better understand how ASD can be detected as early as possible. It is the first prospective study to examine early-onset ASD (by 14 months) and later-onset ASD (after 14 months) over the first three years, pinpointing where development looks the same and where it diverges.

ASD comprises a group of disorders of brain development that affects about 1 in 88 American children.

Researchers looked at 235 primarily White children with and without an older sibling with autism, testing them at regular intervals from ages 6 to 36 months. Using standardized and play-based assessments, they tested children's fine motor skills, understanding of spoken language, and spoken language production skills. They also measured how often the children shared their emotions and initiated communication with others.

The study looked at early development across three groups: children without ASD, children with ASD who were identified by 14 months, and children with ASD identified after 14 months. At 6 months, development within the early- and later-identified ASD groups was comparable to each other and to the non-ASD group. At 14 and 18 months, the early-identified ASD group performed below the later-identified ASD group in many aspects of development. By 24 to 36 months, the two groups showed similar levels of development.

"Results show that ASD has a preclinical phase when detecting it may be difficult," explains Rebecca Landa, director of the Kennedy Krieger Institute's Center for Autism and Related Disorders and the study's lead author. "In some children with ASD, early signs of developmental disruption may not be ASD-specific.

"Routinely administering general developmental screeners, such as the Ages and Stages Questionnaire, should begin in infancy, complemented by ASD-specific screeners by 14 months," suggests Landa. "Screening should be repeated through early childhood. If concerning signs of delay associated with ASD are observed in a child who scores normally on standardized tests, further assessment is warranted."

Antidepressant eases radiation-related mouth pain in head, neck cancer

ScienceDaily (Oct. 29, 2012) ? An oral rinse of the antidepressant doxepin significantly eased pain associated with oral mucositis in patients receiving radiation therapy for cancers of the head and neck, a study led by Mayo Clinic found.

The findings were presented at the American Society for Radiation Oncology annual meeting in Boston.

"Oral mucositis or mouth sores is a painful and debilitating side effect of radiation therapy," says principal investigator Robert Miller, M.D., a radiation oncologist at Mayo Clinic. "Our findings represent a new standard of care for treating this condition."

Doxepin rinse does not cause the side effects associated with narcotic pain medicines, Dr. Miller says.

The Phase III study assessed the effectiveness of doxepin oral rinse versus placebo in 155 patients receiving radiation therapy for head and neck cancer. Patients received a single blinded dose of doxepin on day one and crossed over to the opposite study arm on a subsequent day. Patients reported pain associated with oral mucositis on a pain questionnaire with a scale of 0 to 10 administered at baseline and then at five, 15, 30, 60, 120 and 240 minutes after rinsing with doxepin. Patients could continue doxepin after the study, and 64 percent did so. Doxepin was well tolerated, though stinging, burning, unpleasant taste and drowsiness were reported as side effects.

Mayo Clinic researchers involved in the study also included Rui Qin, Ph.D., James Martenson, M.D., Robert Foote, M.D. and Charles Loprinzi, M.D.

Modern Business SEO the Age Old Press Release Modern Business SEO & the Age Old Press Release

Modern Business SEO & the Age Old Press Release

There has never been such an abundance of free and paid business tools available to succeed in today?s modern business world.

So why do so many people fail?

Today?s business model is so much more complex compared to a decade ago. Businesses must now compete in a new online ?multi dimensional social level? in the way they supply their goods and services.

They have to think outside the square and offer more than something different to stand out above the crowd.

The staggering growth of social media has changed the playing field greatly and sees consumers become more mob orientated when purchasing goods.

They tend to follow the mass opinion by purchasing products and services on the recommendation of other social media users.

Shoppers now have the easy option of checking out the product reviews and opinions generated by other social users who have already purchased the product or service.

The Internet is real world marketing, where other people?s opinions count!

Advertizing and marketing mediums have changed, as is evident in the huge shifts in the print and media industries. Marketing a product or service now relies greatly on Internet exposure.

Those savvy enough to understand the myriad facets of Internet marketing and SEO are super successful. Those who are not so well-informed pay a high price to Internet marketers and SEO firms to get their product in front of the masses.

The Internet and especially SEO marketing, play a critical part in operating a successful business in today?s modern world.

Many business owners are in a quandary as to what to do to take advantage of this still new and quickly evolving media and communications technology. While others simply live in denial and place it in the too hard basket and take no action at all.

Through this quagmire of SEO wizardry there is still one old fashioned form of media presence that stands the test of time in terms of leverage and exposure while not requiring a degree in rocket science to utilize and that is the humble ?Press Release?.

All news starts off as a press release; it is then syndicated and naturally evolves as the story itself unfolds in real time.

It is one facet of old world business advertizing and marketing that has only gotten stronger within today?s information and telecommunications advances.

It fits in perfectly with the electronic infrastructure it must travel along and combines both Internet marketing and SEO aspects into one neat little package.

Businesses that publish press releases on a consistent and regular basis are quickly seen as the authority on the subject, as is evident by their websites high rankings in the search engines.

The press release is a natural marketing progression that is accepted not only by the consumers who read them for their quality information, but by the search engines like Google that can make or break a business in today?s modern world.

A well written and interesting press release quickly gathers momentum on the Internet through syndication on different websites, which in turn creates natural back-links.

All this happens on auto pilot once published. It is not unheard of a new press release being syndicated thousands of times in a very short while, creating thousands of back-links and sending some great optimized SEO juice back to the originating website or business.

The vehicle or website upon which a press release is published is also a critical component of the whole process.

News4us.com is one such website that specializes in offering instant online exposure when it comes to publishing press releases that get syndicated.

From Google News coverage to instant front page exposure on Google?s search engine, News4us.com has been successfully publishing press releases that have great impact and exposure at a very reasonable price.

Easy Homemade Yogurt (Slow Cooker Method) | ABCs and Garden ...

I?ve made no secret of the fact that my family does not drink cow?s milk, but after several months of managing gestational diabetes without the use of meds, there is no denying the fact that yogurt keeps my blood sugar more stable than almost any other food. It also provides a lot of the protein I need each day, so I?ve decided to give it a regular place in my daily breakfast?for now.

Store-bought yogurt can be really expensive, and the options are few if you don?t want sprinkles, rainbow colors and flavors like birthday cake or s?mores. (Yuck!) So, even though I was a little bit nervous about even trying it at first, I?ve started making my own homemade yogurt at home in my trusty slow cooker (aka Crock Pot yogurt, but Crock Pot is a trademarked brand name so I?m trying to be respectful. :) )

Get ready to be astonished at how easy this is!

What you?ll need:

  • 1/2 gallon whole milk (pasteurized is fine, but don?t use ultra-pasteurized)
  • 1/2 cup plain yogurt with live/active cultures (This is your starter.)
  • one heavy towel
  • one slow cooker

?

  1. To begin, dump the 1/2 gallon of milk into your slow cooker. Put the lid on, turn on low and allow to cook for 2 1/2 hours.
  2. Turn off the slow cooker and unplug it. Leave the lid on. Let it sit for about 2 1/2 more hours.
  3. Scoop about 1 1/2 cups of your yogurt-to-be out of the slow cooker and into a bowl. Whisk in your starter yogurt, and then add it all back into the slow cooker. Stir to blend it all together.
  4. With the lid on, wrap the whole slow cooker up in the heavy towel. Make sure it?s snug, then tuck it in for the night. (8 hours is ideal.)
  5. After 8 hours, your yogurt is done!?It will have thickened and will look like the photo below.

Don?t be alarmed: It?s not smooth and perfect like store-bought yogurt, and you can see the liquidy whey, but that?s OK.

I chose to strain mine through cheesecloth to give it a thicker consistency, more like Greek yogurt. It came out splendidly!

?

At this point, you can store your yogurt in the fridge for about a week, up to 10 days. Be sure to keep 1/2 cup set aside for your next batch ? no more buying starters!

I like to keep jelly jars on hand to create little yogurt/fruit parfaits to take to work. There?s no waste, which is great because throwing those little plastic yogurt cups in the trash because my area doesn?t recycle them really grates at me. This is also a great way to use up those little odds and ends of berries, jam, preserves, etc. in your fridge. Again, less waste!

A little honey and granola adds a great sweetness and crunch, too (but don?t add that until you?re ready to eat or you?ll get a soggy mess.)

?Once you do this a few times, you can start to experiment with low-fat or non-fat milk (I haven?t tried it myself, but I have friends that do, and they say it works.) Adding different flavors is fun, too, although I?ve found that mixing with fruit leads to runny yogurt, so I layer.

There are also things you can do with the whey, but I?m not quite that far along yet. Just wanted to pass this method along now that I?ve done it a few times myself. Making anything with live cultures made me nervous at first, but it really couldn?t be easier, and I?m done paying $1.49 each for a simple yogurt with fruit! Plus, nothing beats knowing exactly what is in the food your make with your own two hands. :)

?Have you ever made homemade yogurt at home??

Are there any other typically store-bought foods that you make at home? Please share!

Windows Phone 8 Rooms give every group its private space

Microsoft is already creating a safe, fenced-off area in Windows Phone 8 through Kids Corner, but it's expanding that to include nearly everyone through Rooms. A rough parallel to Groupme, Rooms lets families, friends or companies share calendars, chats, notes and photos without letting any prying eyes get a peek. And if others aren't following the Windows Phone way, they can still view some of the content from another platform. There's no doubt that Microsoft really hopes its communal addition is a way to squeak out an extra phone sale or two from those who like to stick together.

Crucial pre-election payroll report looks weak

(Reuters) - The last employment report before the U.S. presidential election is likely to have something for everyone - for those bullish and bearish on the economy and for Barack Obama and Mitt Romney.

Non-farm payrolls in October are forecast to have risen 124,000, barely more than September's 114,000 gain, according to 78 economists polled by Reuters. The unemployment rate probably edged back up to 7.9 percent after falling to 7.8 percent from 8.1 percent last month. The figures are due on Friday.

On the face of it, that would reinforce the charge leveled by Romney, a Republican, that the policies of his Democratic opponent are to blame for the slowest post-recession recovery since the war.

The proportion of America's working-age population that is employed has fallen to 58.7 percent from 60.6 percent when the Democrat took office in January 2009.

But Obama can counter that nearly 800,000 more Americans are in work today than when he became president and that five million jobs have been created since the December 2009 trough, according to the Bureau for Labor Statistics.

In many respects, the job statistics are likely to paint the same blurred picture as Friday's report showing the economy expanded at a 2.0 percent rate in the third quarter: things are improving, but at a frustratingly slow pace.

"For this reason the labor market is currently neither weak enough to do serious damage to Obama's re-election chances nor strong enough to give him a boost," said Bernd Weidensteiner, an economist with Commerzbank in Frankfurt.

Opinion polls show the November 6 election is too close to call.

FISCAL CLIFF

Douglas Roberts, an economist with Standard Life Investments in Edinburgh, said a weaker-than-expected jobs report would not make him too concerned about the U.S. economy. Housing in particular was rebounding smartly, albeit from a low base.

But any softness would underline the urgency of eliminating policy uncertainty that is causing businessmen to sit on their hands, not least the prospect of tax increases and spending cuts that will kick in next year in the absence of a long-term agreement to cut America's budget deficit.

"Investment and recruitment are being held back until companies have a much better idea of the economic environment they're going to be looking at after the election and the ?fiscal cliff' negotiations are through," Roberts said. "So I don't think the payroll numbers will tell you an awful lot."

The other data highlight of the week is the monthly survey by the Institute for Supply Management, which is closely watched in Asia as a pointer to export and production trends.

Economists polled by Reuters expect the ISM index to be unchanged at 51.5.

David Lubin at Citigroup said there was a "decent relationship" between the ISM survey and the export orders component of China's official purchasing managers' index, which is expected to creep higher. Both reports are due on Thursday.

Signs of stabilization in recent Chinese data, including credit growth and rising imports, were a cause for qualified optimism about the prospects in some other Asian economies, Lubin said in a report.

"But there is no systematic evidence that the revival in Chinese import demand is generating positive spillovers in a large number of countries," he added.

BANK OF JAPAN TO STEP UP

That is definitely the case in Japan, whose firms have scaled back sales, output and investment in China after the recent flare-up of a territorial dispute over islets in the East China sea led to violent protests across China and a partial boycott of Japanese goods.

With the economy also on the ropes because of the strong yen, the Bank of Japan is widely expected to deliver more monetary stimulus when it meets on Tuesday to prevent the world's third-largest economy from relapsing into recession.

Recession already has a firm grip on swathes of the euro zone, hit by a debt and banking crisis that is being exacerbated by austerity measures to reduce yawning budget deficits.

Data on Wednesday will probably show that the unemployment rate for the 17 countries using the single currency rose to a record high of 11.5 percent in September from 11.4 percent in August.

In Spain, which on Friday reported a jobless rate of 25 percent, the economy is likely to have shrunk by 0.4 percent in the third quarter, just as it did in the second quarter. Madrid releases the report on Tuesday.

Estate planning: Who gets the house? | Inheritance | Retirement ...

All of the sudden, the second person?s children are disinherited from their natural father or mother?s assets

There?s a good chance it?s the single most valuable asset you own. It doesn?t take much imagination to think your heirs are going to want it after you are gone.

The fight for your home is likely to be all the more messy in this day and age as second marriages become more mainstream, leaving adult children to battle with step parents for an asset that may have doubled in value over the last decade.

A Statistic Canada report released in September found a higher divorce rate has led to a greater likelihood of a second marriage and, with that chance of remarriage, comes the major issue of deciding on who owns the matrimonial home.

?The family unit is changing,? says Raymond Leclair, vice-president of public affairs at LAWPRO (Lawyers? Professional Indemnity Company). ?The issue becomes then how do people own their home.?

Traditionally, a couple owned their home together and when one parent died, it went to the other spouse. When the remaining parent died, all that wealth went to the kids.

With that ?natural progression,? says Mr. Leclair, you are creating a potentially explosive situation with second spouses.

For instance, stick with the old standard of a joint tenancy agreement where the surviving spouse gets the house, where does that leave your kids if that?s your second spouse? ?In joint tenancy, you own an equal undivided tenancy and the survivor gets the full title,? says Mr. Leclair. ?You have to think where this is going.?

For a couple on their second marriage, a better option may be a tenancy-in-common ownership solution where the couple choose the ownership split on a property. Each parent can then have their share of the property go to whoever they want, including children from a previous marriage.

?There is nothing that obligates you to keep a will forever,? says Mr. Leclair, about agreements spouses may make to pass on wealth to children from another marriage. A surviving spouse who got the whole house can update their will later on, he notes. ?All of the sudden, the second person?s children are disinherited from their natural father or mother?s assets.?

Someone has told them probate fees are bad and joint accounts are good but they may not understand the impact

The situation could become even more contentious if the deceased spouse is the one who paid for the house or did most of the upgrades with the surviving spouse inheriting it all. And the rules apply to everything set up in joint tenancy, including the family cottage or vacation home.

But you can retain control of your home from the grave if you carefully set up ownership well in advance of your death.

Leanne Kaufman, vice-president of the professional practice group at RBC Wealth Management, said fights over the house are mitigated when potential beneficiaries are considered elsewhere as part of estate planning.

She says anything jointly held with right of survivorship will go directly to the other person ? a tactic people use to avoid probate fees. ?Someone has told them probate fees are bad and joint accounts are good but they may not understand the impact,? says Ms. Kaufman. ?In the grand scheme of things [probate] is not that bad.?

An issue for anybody should be taking care of their spouse after their death, so other problems are not created.

?In Ontario, there are provisions that on your death your spouse says I don?t want what I was given under the will, I want a family property claim,? says Ms. Kaufman, about a surviving spouse going after the home. ?It?s the same claim someone can make if they had separated from their [spouse] six months before [their death].?

You also have consider whether you want to create a situation where your grief-stricken spouse is forced to leave the family home just to clean up an estate.

?I recommend that the surviving partner be given a right for a finite period of time, say two years, to find replacement living arrangements, that allows the separation of the children from the surviving step-parent. That usually is best for everyone,? said Paul Hood, author of Estate Planning for the Blended Family.

Mr. Hood said you need consider such things as maintenance, taxes and other costs associated with a home. ?Otherwise, it can be a war. These types of arrangements can be very problematic unless the deceased partner planned well and left enough liquid assets to allow the surviving partner to pay the regular upkeep and real estate taxes,? he says.

Jason Heath, a fee-based certified financial planner at Objective Financial Partners Inc., says he?s had real life examples where people think they are leaving money to their children but in effect they?ve set up a joint ownership situation with their spouse.

?I had to sit down with a client and tell them ?what you think happens in your will is actually the opposite of what really happens.? They were on their second marriage. There are a lot of mistakes people make about thinking assets will pass through their will,? says Mr. Heath.

The rising value of houses in Canada has made all of this more prevalent today. ?It?s amazing we have people who live on government pensions but they have a $1-million home and a $1-million cottage,? says Mr. Heath.

Is Mila Kunis Pregnant With Ashton Kutcher's Baby? (Photos) 1028

Is that a baby bump, Mila Kunis? Ashton Kutcher and Mila were spotted leaving a friend?s home yesterday in LA and the loved-up couple appeared to be in the family way.

Now, I hate baby bump stories and am loathe to take any of them seriously but the Daily Mail was the first to point Mila?s little paunch and it totally looks legit. She also could have had a big lunch. So check out the pics. What do you want to believe?

I DO NOT want Mila to procreate with Ashton but has the couple been hinting at this all along? Mila recently told Glamour magazine: ?I do want a family. I?d rather be in love and have a baby than a movie.? And the gossip mags have said?Ashton?s wanted to be a daddy for awhile. I remember there were all those stories that he and Demi Moore tried to have kids for a long time but it never worked out and that?s one of the reasons he stepped out on her. Whatever Ashton.

Have you noticed that Mila?s eating something in just about every pic with Ashton lately? Now, that means absolutely nothing. And if belly sizes are indicators, it looks like Ashton?s carrying around a little bundle of joy in these pictures too. Still? they?ve been so together lately. They?re definitely not hiding anything anymore. I?ve just got a sick feeling about this. I mean on one hand congrats to them. They?re both at that age and seem really solid. But on the other, it?s ASHTON KUTCHER! She can do so much better!

But what about the timing? Is it possible she could be showing so soon? They supposedly started hooking up back in April which means they?ve been together for about seven months. So I guess it could make sense for her to be a few months pregnant if they waited before getting knocked up right away. Oh, Mila. I thought he was just a rebound fling! I suppose he still can be?.

What do you think? Is Mila Kunis pregnant with Ashton Kutcher?s baby?

Seven Tibetans burn themselves in anti-Beijing protests: group

BEIJING (Reuters) - A total of seven Tibetans have set fire to themselves in the past week in protest against what they claim is heavy-handed Chinese rule in the Himalayan region, a human rights group said in a statement issued late on Saturday.

Cousins Tsepo, 20, and Tenzin, 25, set themselves aflame outside a government building in Driru County, north of regional capital Lhasa on Thursday, London-based group Free Tibet said.

Tsepo died on the way to hospital and Tenzin was taken away by officials, Free Tibet said. His whereabouts are unknown.

Last week saw the highest number of self-immolations since the latest wave of anti-China demonstrations began in 2011, the group said. Since March last year, nearly 60 people have set themselves on fire in protest against Beijing. At least half of them have died.

"It has taken two days for information about this latest protest to emerge," Free Tibet director Stephanie Brigden said in a statement.

"Across Tibet, the Chinese state is employing force and intimidation to quell calls for freedom and suppress information about protests."

China has branded the self-immolators "terrorists" and criminals, and has blamed the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader, the Nobel Peace Prize-winning Dalai Lama, for inciting them.

Beijing brands the Dalai Lama a dangerous separatist, but he denies supporting violence and says he merely seeks greater autonomy for his homeland, which he claims is a victim of Chinese "cultural genocide".

Activists say China tramples on religious freedom and culture in Tibet, which has been ruled with an iron rod since the 1950 takeover. China rejects such criticism, saying its rule ended serfdom and brought development to a backward area.

Soup Can Make You Thin Author Promises Weight Loss in a Bowl

As winter approaches and the weather cools down our bodies naturally start craving soul-warming comfort foods like chili, apple crisp and hot cider. Another fall and wintertime favorite? Soup.

For years throughout college, soup was my dinner of choice. If I was at home I?d make up a batch that would feed me for several days. If I had night classes or evening social events, I?d grab a canned, low sodium variety to take on the go and call it a meal. Soup never seemed to fail me, but I never thought of it as a diet approach.

While some don?t find soup to be a substantial meal, Fiona Kirk, author of the new book, ?Soup Can Make You Thin,? would argue otherwise. Kirk?s theory is pretty straight forward: Eat more soup and weigh less, which is why she firmly believes that skinny people know that a bowl of soup can fill you up, banish cravings, keep you energized, and provide all-around nourishment. For these reasons, she says that sticking to a soup eating regiment for just 10 days can produce noticeable weight loss results.

It?s no secret that soup is a diet-friendly food. It has a high water content thanks to low-calorie broths and vegetables, which helps us feel more satisfied initially. And the other more hearty ingredients, such as starches like noodles or potatoes and proteins like beans and chicken, keep us full for the long haul.

?Soup is simply a miracle in a bowl for fat loss,? says Kirk. ?The combination of water and solid fills you up more effectively and for longer than if you eat exactly the same food but drink the water separately ? plus the water and water content of the vegetables in soup allows for efficient exchange of nutrients into body cells, greatly reducing the possibility of bloating.?

Some are comparing Kirk?s approach to weight loss to other diet phenomenons that are similar in nature, such as the Cabbage Soup Diet?which promises radical weight loss from eating low-calorie cabbage soup for seven days. While Kirk backs up the general idea that soup is an excellent weight loss food, she also stresses the importance of choosing the right kinds of soup for maximum weight loss results.

There are endless varieties of soup available to us, both homemade and store-bought. So which ones do we choose? As reported by Mail Online, Kirk shares her top five tips for choosing the right soups over the wrong ones.

  • Choose soups that are high in protein, or add your own protein toppings to stay nourished longer while maintaining a low calorie count.
  • Add healthy fats like olive oil to stay full, energized and curb cravings.
  • Eat soup before bed for more restorative, restful sleep.
  • Make soup a snack to avoid energy slumps throughout the day.
  • Add herbs and spices to speed up your metabolism and reduce sodium levels.

If soup is your thing, the news just keeps getting better. According to the Kirk, you don?t just have to limit your soup intake to lunch or dinner. She would argue that it makes an excellent breakfast choice, too. ?Breakfasting on soup might be an alien concept to many,? she says, ?but once you have tried it you may never again want to run out the door on just a slice of toast.?

In summary, Kirk contends that the wealth of ingredients in a bowl of soup provide an excellent balance of carbohydrates, protein and fats to provide energy and keep us ?firing on all cylinders.? Not to mention, soup is cheap, convenient and can provide an abundance of vitamins and minerals depending on the quality of the ingredients.

If you?re wondering what soups Kirk personally recommends, you can find 26 of her favorite recipes inside ?Soup Can Make You Thin.? But if you don?t get your hands on the book, simply make up your own variety following her general rules. That?s the beauty of soup: There are no hard and fast rules on what goes in the pot.

7 Valuable Benefits You May Not Even Know You Have ...

Originally posted on Yahoo Finance

Most of us know about Social Security, Medicare, our employer?s retirement plan and IRAs, but if you?re like many Americans, you could be eligible for other benefits worth tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars that you might not even be aware of. These are benefits that you?ve paid for either by working for a particular employer or through your tax dollars. Here are some of the most common:

1)?Lost Pension Benefits

Just like bank accounts are insured by the FDIC, pension plans are partly insured by the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation or PBGC. In a recent?blog post, my colleague Linda Robertson, details how 37,000 people have claimed $ 252 million in missing pension benefits from the PBGC since 1996. However, there are still over 36,000 people with almost $ 197 million in unclaimed pension benefits, ranging from $ 1 to as high as $ 676,436! If you were you in a terminated pension plan, you may want to check out the PBGC?s Pension Search to see if you?re one of them.

2)?Retirement?Accounts from Previous Jobs

Just as there are lost pension benefits, many people have retirement plans from previous jobs that they?ve left ?out there.? A?recent survey?showed that half of Americans left a retirement plan with a previous employer and almost 20% of them left accounts worth $ 50k or more. This usually just entails neglecting to manage the investments and keep the beneficiaries updated, but sometimes it can even mean completely forgetting and essentially losing the account altogether, especially for beneficiaries who may not even know the account ever existed. To make sure this doesn?t happen, consider consolidating your previous retirement accounts into an IRA or your current employer?s plan.?Here?are some of the pros and cons of your options.

3)?Spousal Social?Security?Benefit Windfall

If you apply for Social Security before your normal retirement age, you?ll either get your benefits or a spousal benefit equal to 1/2 of your spouse?s benefits. (You can also qualify for a spousal benefit based on your ex-spouse?s benefits as long as you were married for at least 10 years and you haven?t re-married.) However, there?s also a way to get both. Here?s how it works. First, you must wait until your full retirement age and your spouse has to have filed for their own Social Security benefit. You can then apply for a spousal benefit and allow your benefit to continue to grow (about 8% per year) until age 70. At that point, you would apply to switch to your higher benefit. Using this strategy, you?re basically getting paid a bonus spousal benefit while delaying your benefit. If your full retirement age is 67 and your spouse receives the average Social Security benefit of $ 1,230 per month, that?s a windfall of over $ 22k.

4)?Social?Security?Survivor Benefits

You may think of Social Security as a retirement and maybe a disability program, but Social Security is a life insurance program as well. While the lump sum benefit is only $ 255, your family may be able to collect thousands of dollars in monthly?survivor benefits?when you pass away. It?s not just when your spouse retires either. Minor children and your spouse if they?re taking care of a child under age 16 would be eligible too. (Be aware of the family maximum amount if you have lots of kids though.) This can save you thousands of dollars in unnecessary life insurance premiums. Since Social Security is no longer mailing out annual statements, you can check out their?website?to see how much your family would be eligible for.

5)?Discounted Employee Stock Purchase Plan

While it?s generally not a good idea to have more than 5-10% of your portfolio in your employer?s stock (do you really want your job AND your retirement account tied to the same company?), you may want to see if your employer offers a program allowing you to purchase their stock at a discount (typically up to 15%). Even if the stock never appreciates, it?s like getting an automatic return on your money. You can then sell the stock and diversify the money, although there are tax benefits if you keep the stock at least 2 years past the offering date and 1 year past the purchase date. This?blog postdemonstrates how lucrative this can be. Just don?t forget to limit it to no more than 5-10% of your total portfolio and to factor in the company stock as part of the equity portion of your overall allocation.

6)?Free or Discounted Estate Planning Documents

Do you have a will, power of attorney, and health care directive? If not, don?t let the hundreds or even thousands of dollars it can cost to hire an estate planning attorney be an obstacle in getting these essential documents drafted. You can get a basic health care directive from your hospital or download a state-specific form from the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization?here?at no cost. Another resource for health care decisions is the?Five Wishes, which is a popular, low-cost living will form made available from the non-profit Aging with Dignity organization. You can also draft other legal documents like a power of attorney and a simple will for free at sites likeDoYourOwnWill.com?or for a relatively low cost at sites like?LegalZoom?and?Nolo. While it?s generally advisable to have an attorney look over your will (and especially if you have or want a trust), you can reduce those fees by putting together the first draft yourself. You may be able to get legal help through your employer at discounted rates.

7)?Free or Low Cost Investment Help With Your Retirement Account

Finally, an increasing number of employers are providing employees low cost access to investment management, advice, or guidance.? According to a?study?by Hewitt Associates and Financial Engines, the median 401(k) participant who used investment help through their employer earned close to an average of 2% more per year in their accounts (net of fees) with less risk. While that may not sound like much, the study pointed out that ?a 45-year old who uses professional investment help will have saved 47 percent more by age 65 than if he or she had not used help, assuming the almost 2 percent higher median annual return is maintained over the 20-year period.?The difference becomes even more dramatic if the initial investment is made at a younger age. A 25-year-old who uses professional investment help when investing $ 10,000 could have $ 105,800 by age 65 compared to just $ 52,100 had he or she not used help?a 103 percent increase, again assuming the higher median annual return is maintained over the entire period.?

The simplest method of help is through asset allocation funds like balanced and target date funds. These funds are designed to be fully diversified ?one stop shops.? The latter also automatically adjust your asset allocation to be more conservative as you approach retirement. The problem is that very few employees actually use them as intended and instead treat them as just another fund to be added to the rest of their portfolio.

In addition, asset allocation funds aren?t for everyone. You may not like the way they are managed or you may want your retirement account to complement outside holdings. For that purpose, many employers offer some form of managed advice service either online or over the phone, like Financial Engines or Schwab GuidedChoice?. These programs can recommend a more customized portfolio for you and even provide basic retirement planning on whether you?re on track and how much you need to save, often at no additional cost to you.

Finally, there?s a growing trend of employers offering on-site financial education and planning. You can talk to a financial professional and get your financial questions answered, covering not just investments but possibly a broader range of financial issues like budgeting and taxes. But make sure that the financial planner isn?t just there to sell you something.

In these tough economic times, it?s easy to focus on what we don?t have. Who doesn?t feel that your portfolio could be bigger and your home could be worth more these days? But with a little investigation, you may find that you?re a little better off than you thought.

Fantasy Free to enjoy the trip in the Grade A1 400 metres flat at - Bettor

Fantasy Free to enjoy the trip in the Grade A1 400 metres flat at Romford ?

There is a mix of levels and backgrounds from which the contestants for the Grade A1 400 metres flat have emerged. The race that has brought together six talented hounds will be held at Romford on Wednesday, 24th October. Two most interesting entries for the race tonight are, Fantasy Free and Bouncy Girl.

The 7 to 2 entry, Fantasy Tree, takes the lead due to the open race that he won just through the second last race in which he took part. The last six races of the season have seen him maintain a certain bench mark that has kept his rankings within the frame of the first three positions.

The Paul Young trained captured the Grade A1 400 metres flat on 24th September, 2012 at Romford. The favourite entry picked up enough pace that got him drawing away from the rest of the lot, racing in the middle, and keeping up with the lead until the race did not end in 24.42 seconds.

The margin of 1 ? lengths saw Newinn Phanter securing the runner-up?s prize money.

A third position, and then he qualified as the runner-up of the Grade A1 400 metres flat on 4th October, 2012 at Romford. Getting baulked when racing in the first position cost him the prize money, and that too by the margin of 3 ? lengths.

The race was won by the sixth trap, Newinn Phanter, timing the tack distance in 24.67 seconds.

Premier Fantasy?s son landed the Grade OR Coral, Bring It On! Maidens on 12th October, 2012 at Romford over 400 metres.

Running down the track in black, he set into an early pace and kept racing in the middle. His pace got interrupted by getting bumped when racing in the first position. Leading from the third spot had him taking 24.47 seconds to nail the race.

The Paul Young trained won by an impressive margin of 5 ? lengths.

The Grade A1 400 metres flat saw him qualifying as the runner-up on 20th October, 2012 at Romford. He missed the chance to stamp his greatness in the race by the margin of 2 ? lengths.

He will break from the same foruth trap tonight through whuch he posted in the last success.

Credit Tips for the Holidays - CreditCents

With the economy continuing its slow climb back from the brink, the 2012 holiday season is already shaping up to be an important one for retailers. And they know it. You?ve probably noticed that holiday commercials have already begun flooding the airwaves, and you may have even got a Christmas list already for your little one. (Little kids are SO frivulous, huh?)

?

Anyways, as the holidays sneak up on us in a hurry, there are definitely a few credit tips to keep in mind during the ?Most Wonderful Time of the Year.? Earlier this month, the Huffington Post (among others news distributors) reported that credit card debt in the US grew by 6% from a year ago, this despite the fact that late credit card payments were actually at an 11-year low.

?

So, while most of us are making our payments on time, odds are we?re getting hit with some serious interest fees, too. And since the time of year in which we borrow the most is just about upon us, Creditnet wanted to make you aware of a few credit tips before the real spending begins.

?

  • Set a budget? And STICK to it

?

OK, you probably didn?t need us to tell you to set a holiday shopping budget, but perhaps you did need a reminder to stick to it. If you don?t have a budget in mind before shopping, odds are you could walk out of the store with a whole lot more than you bargained for. (In regards to both presents AND credit card debt.) This can be especially challenging with online shopping, the new preferred way to shop during the holidays. (Well, we prefer it, anyways.)

?

The trick is to keep track of each purchase on its own. You can get a little geeky and set up an Excel spreadsheet or a Google doc if you think it helps your cause for organizing. This way, you can document each Holiday-related purchase, rather than lumping it together with an everyday expense. (Obviously, these aren?t the same.) Plus, it?ll help you keep track of what you got the kids, family members, cousin Eddy who lives in Alaska?everyone!

?

?

?How much should I spend on holiday shopping?? becomes a common Google phrase right around Thanksgiving. There?s no set answer, of course, as every situation is different. However, according to the American Research Group Inc., the average shopper spent $646 on holiday gifts last year. (Down 2% from 2010 but up 56% from 2009 when the economic crisis was still at its peak.)

?

We pass this information along not to say ?This is about what you should spend,? but rather to help you better anticipate the range of which you might be spending come December. (Or, more likely, Nov. 23rd aka ?Black Friday?.) The real answer, however, lies in your credit card interest rate. Here?s what we suggest:

?

  • Only spend what you can pay back quickly

?

Don?t let interest fees kill your Christmas spirit. We would recommend charging only what you believe you can pay back quickly, and by ?quickly? we mean within two or three months, tops. After that, interest fees can start to amass significantly. Once you come up with your budget, devise a plan to pay back your credit card bill within your own self-devised period (again, 60-90 days is preferable) so that you?re not blindsided with interest fees. This way, you won?t be paying back 2012?s Christmas gifts through Thanksgiving, 2013.

?

  • Have your kids make a list

?

And you think we?re kidding?

?

Think about it; you don?t generally go grocery shopping without a list, right? So why treat Christmas shopping any differently? And while you may be worried about what kind of requests your kids come up with, odds are they?re not going to come back to you with a 12-page list that includes words like ?Porsche?. The most expensive request is likely to be a video game console (around $200) or something in that range, and if you?ve ever seen this video, you know that everything other present is gravy.? Plus, there?s the whole ?making your kids happy? part? C?mon, it?s the season of giving!

?

So there you have it. Budget wisely, get a list, and make your own payment plan. It?s that simple! Now, if only figuring out what to do with your in-laws this holiday season was as easy?

Buying art online is a leap of faith. A lot of people look at abstract art and think, "I could do that." Well, that might be true, but what a lot of people don't comprehend about abstract art is the worth of the piece has little to do with what is seen on the canvas. Abstract art is about the progression the artist went through to generate it. It is also about the passion that it, hopefully, stirs up. There is a school of thought in the abstract art world that believes the layering of paint allows the painting to be born. Some artists will actually weigh their painting to establish whether or not it is finished. They feel that the piece isn't ready for the person buying art until the true image has been brought to fruition. The artist recognizes that vision by allowing the contours and colors of the painting to join and lap over one another creating the ultimate piece. The colors the artist decide on also helps create the emotions that attract the art buyers eye. When I see a piece of abstract art, I am either drawn to it and end up buying the art or it does nothing for me. I would suggest when buying abstract art to purchase a piece that speaks to you. Perhaps it is the colors or the shapes, but whatever grabs your eye take the time to really look. If you're choosing a piece of abstract art to buy remember that it will hang in your residence for sometime. It should be something that draws your eye time and again. You will be looking at it for years. Buying art, any art, comes down to a couple of different categories. Are you buying art because you think it will look nice over your couch? Or are you buying art because you think it will increase in value over a period of time? In my estimation, when a person is buying art online, pick a piece you feel passionate, about and if it gains in value that's just icing on the cake.

Thing that makes this game stand out? It?s a platformer with tight controls. Just like the good old days. This is however me still talking about just the first six stages. You?ll have to excuse me as I play past the backer preview levels now.

Creepy Close-Ups: Best Microscope Critter Photos
Spiders, weevils, wasps, lice, mites and mosquitoes are among the creepiest subjects of the winners of Nikon's Small World microscope photography competition this year. Super-close-ups of eyes, tongues and silk spinnerets are amazingly beautiful, but also gross enough to induce shivers.
