From a Ugandan Orphanage to a KC High School Football Field

KANSAS CITY, Mo. ? Football fields all across the Kansas City area are filled with drama: strategy, competition, victory and defeat. But two Staley High School football players have known some real life drama

Kahluna and Faizol are ready for any challenge on the football field. They enjoy working hard and showing off their talent. But five years ago they?d never touched a football. They were in an orphanage in Uganda, Africa.

?Just the eating was bad,? Kahluna says, ?we had only two meals a day, maybe one.?

Head Coach Fred Bouchard says he appreciates everything the boys bring to the field.

?They?re continuing to grow and get better. The good Lord blessed them with some nice talent too,? he says.

He?s especially proud because he?s not just their coach. He?s their dad.

?They?re great young men. They make me proud every day,? Bouchard said. ?Some days they aggravate me because I?m a dad, but I will tell you they?re awesome young men.?

Bouchard and his wife Michelle adopted Kahluna and Faizol after some of his students went to Africa.

?They went on a mission trip and came back on a different mission,? Michelle said. ?The second mission being, ?Let?s get some of these kids out of here.??

Bouchard and his wife already adopted three kids six years ago, but were open to the idea of drafting some new family members.

?We said, ?Who is the nicest kid, regardless, in the whole orphanage?? and they came up with a boy named Kahluna,? says Fred.

Kahluna says he?s glad he was adopted with his brother. Since they?re the coach?s kids, there?s plenty of time to go over play books. And maybe dad is a little hard on them.

?Sometimes when I mess up on the plays he taps me on the head says, ?You can do better than that,?? says Faizol.

And sometimes they need that little push. Last weekend, going up against a tough team televised on ESPN, Staley High struggled.

?Yeah, we don?t always win on the field and last Saturday didn?t work out the way we wanted,? Bouchard said, ?but we?re a work in progress. I?m a work in progress as a parent, I guarantee you that, and our team is a work in progress as a team.?

But all of them are giving it their all. And for Kahluna and Faizol, and the whole family, their life is a big win.

Top of the Morning: New Mass Killings Reported in DRC; Food Scam in India took in Billions

Top stories from DAWNS Digest.?
New Mass Killings Reported in DRC

The United Nations warned of new reports of mass and systematic killings of possibly hundreds of people in part of eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo in the month of August. ?Some of the attacks have been carried out by the armed group known as Ra?a Mutomboki and others by the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (known by the French acronym FDLR), at times in coalition with the armed group known as Nyatura. This has resulted in serious human rights violations, including civilian massacres and the destruction and looting of homes and property, as well as the mass displacement of thousands of civilians. ?Allegations of hundreds of killings are still being verified,? the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay, said. ?However, the preliminary findings suggest that a significant number of people ? most of them women and children ? were slaughtered. The sheer viciousness of these murders is beyond comprehension. In some cases, the attacks against civilians may constitute crimes against humanity.? The attacks on villages by Ra?a Mutomboki and FDLR occur in the context of an increase in security vacuums exacerbated by desertions from the Congolese Army (known by the French acronym FARDC) in April, the subsequent creation of the M23, and the redeployment of FARDC units to contain it, MONUSCO and UNHCR said in a joint news release. They added that many armed groups have also taken advantage of this situation to expand their own area of influence, often carrying out brutal attacks against civilians in the process. ?Proclaiming to protect local populations against the predominantly Hutu FDLR, the Ra?a Mutomboki are targeting civilians of Hutu ethnicity whom they consider to be foreigners and allies of the FDLR,? MONUSCO and UNHCR noted. ?In turn, the FDLR retaliate against civilian populations they believe to be associated with the Ra?a Mutomboki.?? (UN News Center http://bit.ly/SUWmDU)

Indian Food Scam Deprived People in Need

As much as $14.5 billion in food was stolen over the past decade in Uttar Pradesh estimates Bloomberg news. ?India has run the world?s largest public food distribution system for the poor since the failure of two successive monsoons led to the creation of the Food Corporation of India in 1965. The government last year spent a record $13 billion buying and storing commodities such as wheat and rice, and expects that figure to grow this year. Yet 21 percent of all adults and almost half of India?s children under 5 years old are still malnourished. About 900 million Indians already eat less than government-recommended minimums. As local food prices climbed more than 70 percent over the past five years, dependence on subsidies has grown.? (Bloomberg http://bloom.bg/N0yI8n).

Father of Cell Phones Worried His Kids Are Becoming Too Much To Handle Blockquote congn 0 Invention of Mobile
Mobile telephones have altered the globe of communication. From the initial call built in 1946 on one of only a handful of moveable phones to any one of a typical millions, likely billions of calls made today, the mobile or cell phone has altered this method of communication forever and a day. The mobile telephone is either the largest invention of the twentieth century or the most demanding. It is unquestionable that your particular technology behind the cellular telephone is one of the highest quality inventions and that advances in technology keep making the cell phone progressively a wants device.
It was n't until 1973 when Dr. Martin Cooper, former general manager of the Systems division at Motorola, was credited with making the first ever call on a moveable cell phone-a prerogative he enjoyed as its chief creator. Ironically, the first call was made to the head of lab at Bell, their chief rival. Perhaps this was actually fitting since Bell was responsible inventing the crude cell that was designed to be used in prowl car in the 40s. Four years later, Bell made a prototype that was used on trial in Chicago by up to two thousand people. Two years what is going to, in a completely not related speculation, a separate operation was undertaken in Tokyo. There was considerable international buzz about the new technology as it went from being something existing only in science fiction to something that seems imminently. In 1981 Motorola joined with American Radio Telephone to start a second U.S. cell system test in Washington and Buffalo. The movement was gathering impulse, and by 1982 the FCC finally empowered commercial cellular services for the United States. Ameritech made the first American commercial parallel cellular service available in Chicago. Still, the technology was expensive and it was far from being as accessible as phones are today. But by 1987 cellphone subscribers exceeded one million and airways were crowded together. The 90s brought on a new wave of cell phone technology that ushered in the modern era where one is one of the average person. Day to Day Life. The cellphone changed all of a typical questioning. Now, mothers could call and find out if their children carry it to their destination without any misadventures. Husbands could tell their wives when they were running late. If they weren't enquiring about someone's whereabouts they were wishing they had thought of to tell them something before they were away from their office or home phone. Maybe it was to stop and pick up the kids or to go by the bank because they loan officer called. Whatever the reason, before the invention of the cell phone, they would have to wait to see them and so send them back out to appeal to the issue. Emergencies. Cell phone service has been responsible saving more lives than is definitely accounted for. Were someone try and put a number thereon, it would doubtless be in the millions, simply due to being able to contact help wherever you are located. Doctors can easily stay in touch along with their answering service every single time, making them more available in the case of emergencies. Cell phones have grown key pieces of equipment in search and rescue operations. The chances are very good that a person who gets lost will have a cell phone. The cell phone may be geographically followed using navigation tools and GPS which happens to be built into most new cell phones. There have been completely numerous cases of trampers lost in the woods who were only found due their cell phones. Law Enforcement. In addition to hunt for criminals, law enforcement now go through about offences faster than ever before. The hesitating citizen who doesn't want to discover involved physically involved in a happening crime will most oft call it in to the police. This pays law enforcement a start on capturing criminals. Cell phones that include video recording can really film the offense it turns out, offering grounds that is positive in court. Business Communication. Gone are the days when a deal is lost come from not being at work. Nowadays, deal can be sealed while on vacation. The mobile telephone has made the office open All day every day in some cases. Being out of the office is no longer an option because most business people are tethered to their office during their cell phones. Technology has brought the office to the cell phone with the addition of smart phones and email via the telephone. Documents can be sent, reexamined and sent back all while being on the go. The Flip Side. With cell phones the workday is never over and time spent with family or friends can be perpetually off and on unless the tools is powered off. There are safety issues besides with cell phones. Drivers who can't wait up to the point they are stopped to have a conversation run a much greater risk to be in an accident. Using an earpiece helps the problem but does not avoid it beeing the focus is still on the conversation.

Samsung ATIV Smart PC dock hands-on

And hey, what's a Windows 8 tablet without a docking station? Sure enough, Samsung was showing off a snazzy one tonight that turns your bright and beautiful ATIV Smart PC (which is a bit chunkier than its brother) into a notebook. The tablet slots into the top of the keyboard dock, with the Windows 8 button obscured slightly by the top of the dock. The device does look a fair amount like a netbook when it's firmly nestled inside. But we have to say, the quality of the dock doesn't match the beauty of the tablet itself, the plasticky bottom clashing with the brushed aluminum backing, particularly where the lip shows up slightly on the rear of the device.

When using the dock, you're likely going to spend most of your time in the classic UI -- and when you want to switch, you can just hit the button at the top of the dock to release the tablet from its docky prison. The buttons and trackpad feel a bit like a low-end netbook, and we had to do some fiddling to get that mouse across the desktop. We're hoping that Samsung will either release a slicker version or we'll be seeing something from a third-party manufacturer. In the meantime, the dock feels more like a second home for the tablet, best saved for those rare occasions when you'll need to do, say, some serious word processing.

Stop Bain Capital from Closing Factory and Outsourcing Jobs to China

By Miranda Stone on August 29, 2012

Target: The Romney administration

Goal: Stop Bain Capital from closing profitable Freeport auto-parts factory

?Cutting costs? has become a mantra used by businesses to justify layoffs and outsourcing labor. In the midst of an economic crisis, individuals that are struggling financially are more likely to understand?albeit grudgingly?that on a larger scale, businesses are also cutting back on luxuries and basic necessities to get by. In Freeport, Illinois, 170 auto plant workers are finding out this is not the case as they are called on to train the team of workers that will replace them once their company dismantles the plant and moves their operation to China, despite reporting profits.

In early 2011, Sensata?a firm Bain Capital bought out in 2006?acquired the Freeport plant as part of a larger business deal and, shortly thereafter, announced that the factory would be dismantled and its operation moved to China by December 2012. While frustrating, the details of exactly how and why these people will find themselves unemployed are unremarkable. This situation stands out because of its connections to Republican presidential candidate, Mitt Romney, who cofounded Bain Capital and once held a leadership position as its CEO.

Since improving the economy and decreasing the unemployment rates are major talking points and areas of public concern in the current election, Mitt Romney has attempted to distance himself from Bain Capital?s business practices despite the fact he still owns shares and stands to make a significant profit from them. The hypocrisy is clear. Demand that Mitt Romney demonstrate his commitment to improving the economy by intervening on behalf of the Freeport employees to keep their jobs from being outsourced to China.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mitt Romney,

Without consistency, the platforms you stand on are worthless. Claiming that you intend to restore the U.S. economy and decrease unemployment rates while profiting from a company that is in the process of outsourcing local labor?from a consistently profitable factory, no less?hurts your credibility as a presidential candidate.

Both Democrats and Republicans agree that improving the U.S. economy should be a top priority for the future president. Refusing to release tax returns is many things?misleading, deceptive, and suspicious, to name a few?but claiming that you would support these initiatives as president, while contributing to and profiting from the current unemployment rate as a candidate, is downright hypocrisy.

You have an opportunity to show voters that you are willing to follow through on your campaign promises. Rather than denying responsibility and passively contributing to the rapidly declining economy, use your business connections with Bain Capital keep American workers employed.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]

Learn How To Invest In Commercial Real Estate With These Ideas ...

You must research and stay patient in order to be successful at investing in commercial property. A number of newcomers to commercial real estate investing have successfully learned the ropes and turned a tidy profit. The purpose of this article is to educate you about some of those basics so you too can experience success.

Before settling on a broker, determine if they negotiate aggressively or rationally. Ask how they were trained and how much experience they have. In addition, you should ensure that the methods they employ are ethical and that they know how to go about obtaining the best deals. Request additional information or examples of the results from previous negotiations.

Pest Control

Be sure to have a professional building inspector go through your property before you put it up for sale. If anything turns up during the inspection, you should immediately address the problem.

TIP! Locate a lender prior to putting in an offer for a commercial property. Discover your area?s best lenders by talking to friends and investors that you know.

If you are renting or leasing, be sure to know about pest control arrangements. Talk to your rental professional regarding pest control policy if you rent in a community known for bug or rodent infestation.

It is possible to spend less money cleaning up environmental hazards on commercial property. Typically you are only required to pay for the cleanup costs if you own a piece of the property. The price of disposing environmental waste can cost a fortune. Try getting a report about the environment from one of the environmental assessment agencies. This can cost you a good bit of money, but it will save you in the long run.

Have family, friends, and professional lenders partner with you to make sure you have enough cash to buy commercial real estate. The best way to establish a solid group of partners is to have preset contracts in place that document the rate of repayment or how they can earn a portion of your profits from the real estate.

Investors of commercial real estate should be sure to be conscious that drastic inflation is a real possibility in the near future and shouldn?t overlook it when thinking about buying. In the past, most leases had various built-in clauses that had their price adjusted to the CPI, which protected those who signed from inflation. However, these days, this is rarely done, which means inflation could hit you where it hurts the most.

TIP! Consult with your tax adviser prior to purchasing any commercial real estate property. Your tax adviser can inform you of all of the potential costs related to your investment, and also tell you what percentage of your profits will have to be paid in taxes.

Try to get a presence online prior to jumping into the market. These days, a website is a must as are accounts on professional networking sites like LinkedIn. Try to learn about SEO to optimize your site. Your goal is to have people instantly find information about you when they type your name in to a search engine.

Dual Agency

Check any disclosures a potential real estate agent gives you carefully. Try to beware of dual agency. In a dual agency the Realtor represents both parties of the transaction. Or, for short, the agent is looking out for both parties? interests. If there is a dual agency, everyone should be honest about it and find an agreement.

Tour any properties you are considering for purchase. Definitely consider having a professional contractor go with you when looking at potential properties. Make a proposal early, and get into the beginning stages of negotiation. Consider counteroffers carefully prior to responding.

TIP! One of the most important things you should be aware of is emergency maintenance. Ask in advance who will be handling any emergencies that arise.

The advice you have just read should help you get started on the right foot in commercial real estate. If you use the tips provided in this article, you will see why so many people are successful at commercial real estate, and you can start to reap the

Protein found to regulate red blood cell size and number

ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2012) ? The adult human circulatory system contains between 20 and 30 trillion red blood cells (RBCs), the precise size and number of which can vary from person to person. Some people may have fewer, but larger RBCs, while others may have a larger number of smaller RBCs. Although these differences in size and number may seem inconsequential, they raise an important question: Just what controls these characteristics of RBCs?

This question is particularly relevant for the roughly one-quarter of the population that suffers from anemia, which is often caused by flawed RBC production. A better understanding of how RBC production is controlled may offer greater insight into the development and potential treatment of anemia.

By analyzing the results of genome-wide association studies (GWAS) in conjunction with experiments on mouse and human red blood cells, researchers in the lab of Whitehead Institute Founding Member Harvey Lodish have identified the protein cyclin D3 as regulating the number of cell divisions RBC progenitors undergo, which ultimately affects the resulting size and quantity of RBCs. Their findings are reported in the September 14 issue of Genes and Development.

"This is one of the rare cases where we can explain a normal human-to-human variation," says Lodish, who is also a professor of biology and bioengineering at MIT. "In a sense, it's a window on human evolution. Why this should have happened, we have no idea, but it does."

Lodish likens cyclin D3's role in RBCs to that of a clock. In some people, the clock triggers RBC progenitors to mature after four rounds of cell division, resulting in fewer but larger RBCs. In others it goes off after five cell division cycles, which leads to production of a greater number of smaller RBCs. In both cases, the blood usually has the same ability to carry oxygen to distant tissues.

The initial hint of cyclin D3's importance came from GWAS, genetic surveys of large numbers of people with or without a particular trait. Researchers compare the groups in an attempt to identify genetic variations.

"The problem with most GWAS is that you get a bunch of potentially interesting genes, but that doesn't tell you anything about the functional biology, so you really have to figure it out," says Leif Ludwig, a Lodish graduate student and co-author of the Genes and Development paper. "You only know something has a role, but you don't know how it can cause variation. This work on cyclin D3 is a really nice example of how functional follow-up on a GWAS association can really teach us something about underlying biology."

In the case of RBC size and number, a mutation affecting cyclin D3 production bubbled to the surface from the GWAS's murky genetic data. Ludwig and co-author Vijay Sankaran then confirmed that reduced or inhibited cyclin D3 expression in mice and in human RBC progenitors caused those cells to halt cell division and mature earlier, producing larger and fewer red blood cells than mice and cells with uninhibited cyclin D3 production.

As one of only a handful of studies that have successfully used GWAS to produce definitive biological results, Sankaran is excited that this work confirms the value of such genetic studies.

"Can genetics teach us about biology?" asks Sankaran, also a postdoctoral researcher in the Lodish lab. "Yes! This work tells us that as genetic studies identify new genes, there will probably have been a lot of things biologists may have ignored. Genetics allows you to shine a spotlight on something interesting and then home in on it see what can be learned."

Foreign Policy: Who Has Romney's Ear?

To hear some advisers tell it, the Romney campaign is really Romney Inc., a smoothly-run organization that efficiently funnels the views of a vast array of foreign-policy advisers through a few key coordinators who brief the candidate. This is a positive contrast to the last time Mitt Romney ran in 2008. ?The last time, it was me, the governor, and five other people sitting around a table. We didn?t do that well,? says Mitchell Reiss, the former head of policy planning at the State Department who is one of a wide array of advisers Romney brought on from the Bush administration. "Now it?s a $500 million operation ... and there so many more people who have expertise.?

But other advisers inside the campaign say this expertise is still not being well employed, which may be one reason Romney appeared so amateurish during his recent gaffe-strewn tour through Britain, Israel, and Poland. According to one Romney adviser who would discuss the internal dynamics of the campaign only on condition of anonymity, there is an ?experience gap? between the inner circle of people who talk to Romney directly and the many on the outside who have to funnel their views through that inner circle, especially through the young and untested foreign-policy coordinator, Alex Wong.

?A lot of people with experience in government are not in the inner circle,? says this adviser. Some of the former government officials who are nominally on Romney?s foreign-policy advisory teams say they haven?t briefed the candidate personally since 2011. Other advisers speak out or write op-eds on their own,?leading to the perception that there are publicly-aired disputes inside the campaign when in truth few of these advisers are actually in contact with Romney.

The lingering sense that Romney?s foreign-policy views remain somewhat inchoate could affect not only voters? calculations but also possibly those of the Israelis, who are believed to be contemplating whether to attack Iran?s nuclear facilities before the election. While Romney took a hard line in supporting Israel?s right to defend itself on his trip?and he is closer to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is said to favor a strike, than Obama is--he went out of his way to avoid endorsing an Israeli strike.

The disarray feeds Israeli worries about waiting. ?There is a belief that whether Obama or Romney wins, everything is more complicated? for the Israelis if they wait, says David Makovsky of the Washington Institute for Near East Peace. ?If Romney wins, he needs to get inaugurated, name staff, get them confirmed, and do policy reviews. That could take them till next fall,? which may well be beyond the Israeli window for action against Iran?s mountain nuclear site at Fordow, which is under construction.

Meanwhile, however, the Israelis?who are engaged in their own intense debate about whether to strike?hear a cacophony of voices in the Romney camp. ?We?ve got a very big tent. You?ve got a lot of different voices,? concedes another Romney adviser. ?The debate isn?t ?Gee, can we live with an Iranian nuclear weapon,? it?s how you structure a response.? Even so, with Romney playing to his conservative base, ?there hasn?t been a big conversation of how much would he put back into a diplomatic effort? with Iran, the first adviser says.

The Romney foreign-policy inner circle starts with Wong, who bears the expansive title of ?director of foreign, defense, and judicial policy? and who conducts the weekly conference call with advisers. Wong is a 2007 Harvard Law School graduate and a former associate at the law firm of Covington & Burling, but his credentials as a foreign-policy expert are thin at best, amounting to a summer internship at the U.S. mission to the U.N. in 2005. The circle also appears to include Dan Senor, the former spokesman for the Coalition Provisional Authority in Iraq who co-wrote a 2009 book on Israel?s entrepreneurial culture, Start-Up Nation, which was cited by Romney during much- criticized remarks he made at a Jewish fundraiser in July appearing to denigrate Palestinians. Senor, who like Romney is a sometime Wall Street financier with a Harvard Business School degree, accompanied Romney on the Mideast leg of his trip last month.

Reiss is also considered by some to be close to Romney, along with former ambassador Rich Williamson, although by Reiss?s own testimony he himself doesn?t talk to Romney much. He says Wong is the ?gatekeeper,? and the process works well. The internal complaints, Reiss adds, are just ?sour grapes. People aren?t getting face time. They?re not getting stroked the way they might want to get stroked, but the reality is it?s a much bigger operation. There?s no requirement for us to do this in person.?

Reiss adds that ?there are a number of us who have been with him for a while, that have ability to talk to directly when we feel? it?s necessary.... I think all of us refrain? from doing that unless there?s an emergency.? Wong, he adds, ?gives a very accurate and honest reflection of what it is we? re saying,? which often goes to Lanhee Chen, the head of policy, and then to Romney.

The Romney campaign is trying hard to stay on unified message. When National Journal contacted one Romney foreign policy adviser, Ashley Tellis, a former senior adviser to the State Department on India, he declined an interview, saying, ?I?m not supposed to discuss this with anyone. I?m under strict instructions not to.? Another adviser, Princeton scholar Aaron Friedberg, who was former Vice President Dick Cheney?s deputy for national security, simply passed along an e-mail to Andrea Saul, the Romney campaign?s spokesperson.

Saul did not respond to a separate e-mail requesting comment.

Ashwin fires India to innings win in Kiwi Test

Ravichandran Ashwin exposed New Zealand's batting limitations against spin with a second successive six-wicket haul as India won the opening Test by an innings and 115 runs on Sunday.

The off-spinner (6-54) was superbly supported by left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha (3-48) as New Zealand, following on after conceding a 279-run lead, collapsed to 164 in their second innings on the penultimate day in Hyderabad.

Man-of-the-match Ashwin, who grabbed a career-best 6-31 in the first innings, finished with 12-85, his best match-haul in seven Tests.

It was also the best performance by an Indian in a Test against New Zealand, surpassing 12-152 by off-spinner Srinivas Venkataraghavan at New Delhi in 1965.

"It's a good start and the pressure is off my back. I can enjoy myself and let the ball do the talking. I enjoyed the wicket. There was enough in it for the bowlers and it was a very good batting wicket as well," said Ashwin, 25.

"I thought there were a couple of very good catches. When catches are being taken, it puts the batsmen under a lot of pressure and it's definitely something you relish as a spinner."

New Zealand were comfortably placed at 98-1 at one stage before losing their last nine wickets for just 66 runs in a dramatic collapse on a spinner-friendly track.

There was no hint of collapse in the morning session as Kane Williamson (52) and opener Brendon McCullum (42) denied India success with their determined batting.

"Not only Aswhin, but Ojha also bowled very well. They bowled well in tandem and put a lot of pressure on us," said New Zealand skipper Ross Taylor.

"I guess any time you are bowled out for 160 both times, you have got to be disappointed. Obviously spin is an area we need to work on and come back harder and stronger at Bangalore (venue for the second Test)."

The tourists' slide began in the afternoon session with the dismissal of McCullum, trapped leg-before by Ojha after adding 72 for the second wicket with Williamson.

India struck twice in the opening six overs of the second session through paceman Umesh Yadav and Ashwin.

McCullum was unlucky to be given out lbw as TV replays suggested he had inside-edged a Yadav delivery on to his pads, while Taylor (seven) was bowled by Ashwin offering no stroke.

Ashwin also removed Daniel Flynn (11) and James Franklin (five) in the afternoon before taking three more wickets in the last session to complete an easy Indian win.

New Zealand added 123 runs to their overnight total of 41-1 after play started two hours late because of rain.

McCullum, an attacking batsman, curbed his shots during his 130-ball knock which contained just three fours.

The 22-year-old Williamson, who cracked a hundred on his Test debut against India in 2010, fell after completing his fifth half-century in 15 Tests, caught by Virender Sehwag in the slips off Ojha.

He hit four boundaries in his 163-ball knock.

The morning session belonged to McCullum and Williamson who applied themselves well, helping their team score 51 in 25 overs.

India started the day with Ojha and Ashwin, who had shared nine wickets in the first innings, but the duo failed to trouble McCullum and Williamson.

India had dismissed New Zealand for 159 in the first innings on Saturday after posting 438.

The second and final Test starts in Bangalore on August 31.

Self Improvement & Memory Training: Ways to Improve Your Self

ByAnthony O Kamson

Confidence - what is it and how do we attain it?

"I see myself falling flat on my face and then I do". Is a common statement by those who have come to believe that they 'lack confidence'

What you think will happen. If you think you're a failure, you will fail. Confident people think themselves successful and they find success, even though their confidence is most of the time an act. They literally run a kind of internal home movie where they are doing well.

So, before something nerve-wracking happens run through a positive internal 'home movie' of yourself in the situation that you are in. If you're going for a job interview, imagine just how well you'll do and tell yourself you're going to succeed. Even if you don't get the job, you'll naturally do better than if you had imagined the worst.

"I typically feel so nervous inside that I sabotage myself as though stage-fright". What are sometimes called 'butterflies' are useful. They in fact remind us to give our very best performance. However, they can also make us so physically nervous that we fail. The answer is simple; by faking it, you can often end up feeling confident quite naturally. This is what people do who appear confident do on a daily basis.

So just before that important task or that big date, relax, then stand tall, hold your head up, relax your shoulders and stand with your weight evenly balanced over each foot smile to raise your spirits and go for it!

"However good I feel, I often look nervous to other people". If you act as though you lack confidence, other people will react to that. Often badly. Use the 'SET' plan, smile, eye contact, touch. All which pick up on the three elements confident people typically demonstrate.

1. Smile and you'll seem relaxed.
2. Hold eye contact and you'll seem sure of yourself.
3. Touch with a firm handshake and you'll seem in control.

"I sometimes feel unsure when I'm doing something new". This statement sounds really negative. Isn't it bad to feel unsure? But actually, this is a positive strategy in some new circumstances. It's no good feeling falsely sure of yourself in all new things. If you were too confident you may not see a potential danger.

With anything new, feeling unconfident is your mind's way of alerting you to your lack of experience or a potential danger. So this isn't a negative thought pattern. But you may have wrongly viewed it as negative. And your reaction to the new situation was wrong.

So with anything new a speech, an interview, any new skill, practice ahead of time is what is needed. By rehearsing you will raise your performance and in turn raise your confidence. Through hypnosis you rehearse different situations as if they were real and you do this within you own mind. This speeds up the learning process in gaining more confidence.

Personal Health: Medical Radiation Soars, With Risks Often Overlooked

?

Radiation, like alcohol, is a double-edged sword. It has indisputable medical advantages: Radiation can reveal hidden problems, from broken bones and lung lesions to heart defects and tumors. And it can be used to treat and sometimes cure certain cancers.

But it also has a potentially serious medical downside: the ability to damage DNA and, 10 to 20 years later, to cause cancer. CT scans alone, which deliver 100 to 500 times the radiation associated with an ordinary X-ray and now provide three-fourths of Americans? radiation exposure, are believed to account for 1.5 percent of all cancers that occur in the United States.

Recognition of this hazard and alarm over recent increases in radiological imaging have prompted numerous experts, including some radiologists, to call for more careful consideration before ordering tests that involve radiation.

?All imaging has increased, but CTs account for the bulk of it,? said Dr. Rebecca Smith-Bindman, a specialist in radiology and biomedical imaging at the University of California, San Francisco. ?There?s clearly widespread overuse. More than 10 percent of patients each year are receiving very high radiation exposures.?

The trick to using medical radiation appropriately, experts say, is to balance the potential risks against known benefits. But despite the astronomical rise in recent years in the use of radiation to obtain medical images, this balancing act is too often ignored. The consequences include unnecessary medical costs and risks to the future health of patients.

Both doctors and patients have a responsibility to better understand the benefits and risks and to consider them carefully before doctors order and patients undergo a radiation-based procedure.

Patients may be surprised to learn that some of the newest uses of radiological imaging, including CT scans of coronary arteries to look for calcium buildup, have not yet been tested in scientifically designed clinical trials, and thus their true benefits are at best a guess. Experts have estimated that widespread use of coronary artery scans, which deliver 600 times the radiation of a chest X-ray, could result in 42 additional cases of cancer for every 100,000 men who have the procedure, and 62 cases for every 100,000 women who do.

For every 1,000 people undergoing a cardiac CT scan, the radiation adds one extra case of cancer to the 420 that would normally occur. This risk may seem inconsequential, but not to someone who gets a cancer that could have been prevented.

Complicating the matter is the enormous variation ? sometimes tenfold or more ? in the amounts of radiation to which patients are exposed from the same procedure at different institutions, or even at the same institution at different times.

Although the cancer-causing effects of radiation are cumulative, no one keeps track of how much radiation patients have already been exposed to when a new imaging exam is ordered. Even when patients are asked about earlier exams, the goal is nearly always to compare new findings with old ones, not to estimate the risks of additional radiation.

As Dr. Michael S. Lauer of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute wrote in The New England Journal of Medicine three years ago, ?The issue of radiation exposure is unlikely to come up because each procedure is considered in isolation, the risks posed by each procedure are low and seemingly unmeasurable, and any radiation-induced cancer won?t appear for years and cannot easily be linked to past imaging procedures.?

After an extensive review of the environmental causes and risk factors for breast cancer, the Institute of Medicine reported last year that sufficient evidence of risk was found only for combined hormone therapy used by postmenopausal women and exposure to ionizing radiation, at doses much higher than those received during a mammogram.

Everyone is exposed to a certain amount of background radiation ? about three millisieverts a year from cosmic rays, radon gas and the earth?s radioactive elements. By 1980, according to The Harvard Health Letter, various introduced sources, like medical tests, nuclear power plants, nuclear fallout, television sets, computer monitors, smoke detectors and airport security scanners, added another 0.5 millisieverts per year.

Now, however, the amount of radiation used medically rivals that of the background radiation, adding three millisieverts each year to the average person?s exposure. (A mammogram involves 0.7 millisieverts, a dose that is doubled with a 3-D mammogram.)

There are many reasons for this increase. Doctors in private practice who have bought imaging equipment tend to use it liberally to recoup the expense. The same goes for hospitals just a few miles apart that needlessly duplicate certain equipment so they can boast of having the latest and greatest capacity to detect disease. Doctors ordering tests suffer no adverse effects, and patients feel they are getting the most that modern medicine can offer.

Dr. Lauer wrote in a commentary about cardiac tests, ?Most physicians who order imaging tests experience no consequences for incurring costs for procedures of unproven value. On the contrary, they or their colleagues are paid for their services, and their patients don?t complain because the costs are covered by third parties. Patients are pleased to receive thorough evaluations that involve the best cutting-edge technologies.?

According to a new study, the rise in medical imaging clearly goes beyond financial motives. Dr. Smith-Bindman and her colleagues reported in June in The Journal of the American Medical Association that a dramatic rise in imaging rates from 1996 to 2010, including a tripling of CT scans, occurred in six large prepaid health systems where the financial incentive ought to have encouraged fewer, not more, tests. The increased testing doubled the proportion of patients who received high or very high radiation exposures.

By 2010, the researchers reported, 20 CT scans were performed for every 100 adult patients; for every 100 patients ages 65 to 75, about 35 CT scans were done. And among the 10 to 20 percent of children in the study who underwent a single CT scan of the head, radiation doses were in the range previously shown to triple the risk of later developing brain cancer or leukemia.

Dr. Smith-Bindman urged patients to participate in the decision to undergo medical imaging. She said, ?Patients should ask, ?What is this test for? Do I need it? Why? Do I need it now?? ?

Legislation can help curtail, or at least monitor, radiation doses, she said, citing a California law that took effect in July requiring that the dose used for CT scans be recorded in every patient?s medical record and that inadvertent overdoses be reported to the state immediately.

If such recording were to become a national mandate, electronic medical records could help doctors and patients keep track of radiation exposures and provide further incentive to avoid unnecessary imaging.

Sidebar: Limiting the Fallout of Cancer Treatment

Radiation therapy to treat cancer depends on much higher doses than are used in imaging, and these treatments have long been known to increase a patient?s risk of later developing another cancer. Doctors consider this risk of radiation therapy reasonable when the goal is to prevent death from the original cancer.

Last year in a report in The Lancet Oncology researchers from the National Cancer Institute and M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston reported that among 647,672 adult cancer patients treated five or more years earlier, about one half of 1 percent developed a second cancer years later related to radiation treatment of the first cancer. More than half of the second cancers occurred in survivors of breast and prostate cancers.

As expected, the risk of developing a second cancer was highest among those originally treated at younger ages and most often involved organs exposed to the highest doses of radiation.

In recent years, radiologists have taken great pains to limit radiation exposure to nontarget organs ? for example, by using a cone beam when treating breast cancer ? which should reduce the risk of radiation-induced second cancers.

This post has been revised to reflect the following correction:

Correction: August 25, 2012

A brief article on Tuesday that accompanied the Personal Health column, about the risks of medical radiation, misstated the proportion of cancer survivors in a study who later developed a new cancer related to radiation treatment. About one half of 1 percent of patients treated with radiation therapy ? not about 8 percent ? later developed a second cancer as a result.

Flooring Fanatic: Still looks great years from now

Pets? Kids? Finally --- The Perfect Floor!

If it is time (or past time!) for new floors for your home, consider laminate floors. Laminate flooring has become a popular choice for many homeowners due to its ability to closely emulate today's most popular hard surfaces, especially hardwood planks and ceramic or stone tiles. Besides the great textures and designs, laminate flooring offers improved durability, easier maintenance and affordability compared to other types of hard surface floors. These floors are extremely resistant to wear, stains and sunlight fading. The beautifully rich textured finishes make these floors a great alternative for most areas in your home.

Call or come by and discuss your flooring makeover with your Enhance Design Consultant. We'd love to show you these floors that are made to handle your lifestyle!

Can You Tell Which One Is A Laminate

and Which One Is A Hardwood Floor?

(see answers below)

Ask The Experts

I have been told that laminate floors are not good for resale. Why?

Elisabeth answers: I think that most people saying this base their opinion on first generation laminates and on bad do-it-yourself installations that they have seen. I will agree that when laminates first came on the market, in the 1990's, they did not look as good as they do today. You could see the seams, there was no texture, and the visuals weren't great. As with everything, technology has greatly improved the appearance and realism of laminate flooring. There are many higher quality laminates that I would challenge an expert to say with a quick glance if it was real wood or laminate.

Also, to be honest, most DIY installations are not good. Just because it looks so easy to do on the home improvement shows does not mean it is. If the installation is not properly done, the floor will be much noisier, move when you walk on it, etc. Floating installations have very stringent installation requirements, and the floor needs to be installed correctly in order to look good and to perform well.

That being said, if your prospective home purchaser is the perfect candidate for real hardwoods, meaning no animals, empty nester, Mrs. Clean, etc., they will probably want the hardwoods. If your subdivision trends towards families, laminates will be a good selling feature for your home. Just buy a good quality laminate and have it professionally installed.
