Fiat CEO sees 50 percent chance of Chrysler IPO, prefers buyout

KOKOMO, Indiana (Reuters) - Sergio Marchionne, the chief executive of both Fiat and its majority-owned Chrysler Group LLC unit, said he sees a 50 percent chance that Chrysler will go public but would prefer that it be fully merged with Fiat.

Fiat shares ownership in the smallest U.S. automaker with a retiree trust fund affiliated with the United Auto Workers labor union. Marchionne said he would prefer that Italian automaker Fiat buy the trust fund's holdings.

"My preference is to be one single company," Marchionne told reporters in Kokomo, Indiana, on Thursday. "We belong together."

Over the last four years, the two automakers have been blending their operations as Fiat has increased its stake in Chrysler, said Marchionne, who has been CEO of both companies since Chrysler emerged from bankruptcy in 2009.

Fiat, however, has been odds with the trust fund over Chrysler's worth. The fund is under pressure to squeeze as much value as possible from its Chrysler holding to pay for medical benefits.

Marchionne was speaking at a plant in Kokomo, Indiana, where Chrysler announced it would invest $374 million in four Indiana plants to support production of its more fuel-efficient eight- and nine-speed transmissions by the end of the year.

The move will create up to 1,250 jobs in Indiana, including as many as 850 jobs at the company's new Tipton Transmission Plant, Chrysler said on Thursday.

Chrysler is spending $162 million to make a nine-speed transmission at Tipton. Production at Tipton is expected to start in the first quarter of 2014.

About $212 million will be invested in the Kokomo Transmission, Kokomo Casting and Indiana Transmission I plants to make the eight- and nine-speed transmissions. The money will be used to install additional tooling and equipment needed to make Chrysler's eight- and nine-speed transmissions by the fourth quarter of 2013.

MetroPCS widens Rich Communications Services to all North American carriers

There's been a degree of irony to MetroPCS' support for Rich Communication Services when it's been limited to the one carrier's network in the US -- where's that universal chat and sharing we were promised? The carrier plans to live up to those lofty expectations with word that its Jibe Mobile-developed Joyn service will talk to devices on any North American carrier that supports the spec. That currently doesn't equate to ubiquitous access when RCS isn't widespread, but it's a start. We'll just have to wait for the expanded service to deploy later this year, and for more hardware to hit the streets.

Texting Gloves Dangerous in Winter, Says expert

Feb. 26, 2013 ? The popular half-gloves that leave fingers uncovered for texting may be good for communicating electronically but they may also lead to permanent loss of fingers due to exposure to the cold.

"Fingers are one of the first body parts to feel the effects of the cold and damp and along with toes, ears and the nose are frequently subjected to frostbite and even amputation," says Arthur Sanford, MD, Division of Trauma, Surgical Critical Care and Burns, Loyola University Health System. "Better to fat finger a text due to wearing winter gloves than to lose a finger due to the cold."

Frostbite is most likely to happen in body parts farthest from the heart and those with large exposed areas. "Blood vessels start to constrict at or below 32 degrees Celsius to preserve body temperature," says Sanford. "The lack of blood in areas of the body can lead to freezing and the death of skin tissue."

Sanford says he treats frostbite in people of all ages. "The old lady who goes out in the snow to get her mail, falls, breaks a hip and lays in the cold and wet for hours until being discovered is a typical victim of frostbite," he says. "But the younger person who goes on a drinking bender and walks home in the snow and damp is also a familiar sight at Loyola trauma."

When suffering from prolonged exposure to cold, use room temperature or slightly warm water to gently revitalize the body. "Do not use hot water, do not rub with handfuls of snow and do not vigorously massage the frozen area," warns Sanford. Overstimulation can actually worsen the situation.

Winter wellness tips from Sanford and Loyola include the following:

? Dress in layers. "If a sweater, pair of socks or other article of clothing gets wet, you can quickly remove it and still be protected from the cold and wet," says Sanford.

? Wear a hat, gloves or mittens and proper footwear including socks and boots. "Texting gloves may look cool and be handy for communicating but it is better to wear full gloves or mittens and save your fingers," says Sanford.

? When outerwear becomes wet, go inside and change to dry clothing. "Wet socks especially are dangerous and can lead to a condition called trench foot which results in poor blood circulation, decay of tissue, infections and even amputation," says Sanford.

? If affected area becomes numb, turns red or blue, swells or feels hot, go to the emergency department. "An emergency physician will assess the tissue and take the proper steps to save the body part," says Sanford.

Hypothermia, when the body temperature is below 95 degrees F(35 degrees C), was the cause of death for 700 Americans between 1979 -- 1998. "Frostbite in January, operate in July is a common mantra here at Loyola," says Sanford. "Bundling up for winter may take you out of media circulation temporarily but better that than to permanently lose the ability to text due to frostbite."

What does Carnival owe for 'nightmare' cruise? Not much

What does a cruise line owe you when your dream vacation turns into a nightmare? As passengers who were trapped aboard the ill-fated Carnival Triumph for five days earlier this month are going to learn ? it?s not very much.

The cruise line has very limited liability even when things go terribly wrong. This is all spelled out in the ticket contract.

?The Carnival passenger contract is standard,? said Steve Danishek, a travel industry analyst based in Seattle. ?They protect the cruise lines from all sorts of liability and make it incredibly difficult for a passenger to take any legal action against them.?

Carnival?s ticket contract specifically bans class action lawsuits.

?All disputes other than personal injury, illness or death must go through arbitration and they get to choose the arbitration company,? said Professor Martin Davies, director of the Tulane Maritime Law Center. ?That means if your claim is simply, ?you ruined my vacation,? then this has to go to arbitration.?

And that arbitration hearing will be in Miami, where Carnival is headquartered. This may discourage people from going this route, but experts tell NBC News it?s perfectly legal.

A Miami law firm that specializes in maritime cases has filed a class action lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Florida against Carnival Corp. on behalf of all of the passengers on board the Carnival Triumph during its fateful cruise earlier this month.

The suit alleges Carnival was negligent because it allowed hazardous conditions ?to exist on its vessel which it knew or should have known was likely to cause injury, harm and damages to its passengers.?

The class action complaint claims passengers were given ?spoiled or rotting food that was unfit for reasonable safe human consumption, and were generally forced to live in squalid conditions that created a severe risk of injury, illness and/or disease.? The lawsuit alleged that the ?unbearable? conditions ?caused numerous passengers to vomit and/or become nauseous.?

The suit specifically asks the court to rule Carnival?s ban on class action claims to be null and void in this case because of the cruise line?s alleged negligence.

Carnival?s public relations manager, Aly Bello-Cabreriza, said the company cannot comment on pending litigation.

University of Washington Law Professor Anita Ramasastry said it will be an uphill battle for the passengers who file lawsuits.

?There is a chance a court would say that the arbitration clause and the class action waiver are unconscionable, especially for people who got sick because of the conditions on the ship,? she said. ?But that?s unlikely when you look at what?s been done in other cases.?

Compensation for a lousy cruise
Carnival says it will give all of the 3,000 Triumph passengers a refund for their trip and transportation expenses. Everyone will also get $500 and a future cruise credit equal to what they paid to be on the ship.

In a statement on its website, the company also promised to reimburse everyone for all shipboard purchases made during the voyage, except gift shop and casino charges or art purchases.

This may not be enough to appease the angry passengers, but it is significantly more than the company was required to do for them based on the contract. According to clause 7(c):

?Carnival has the right without previous notice to cancel this contract at the port of embarkation or any time during the voyage and shall thereupon return to the Guest, if the Contract is completely canceled, his passage money, or, if the Contract is partially canceled, a proportionate part thereof. Under such circumstances, Carnival shall have no further liability for damages or compensation of any kind.

?Carnival could have pulled the ship to the nearest port, gotten everybody off and that would have been it,? Danishek explained. ?They would have owed nothing but a partial refund because they would have performed to the terms of the contract.?

Very few people read the contract they get when buy a ticket on a boat, plane or train or rent a car. These companies all have tightly written contracts that are designed to protect them from you.

Liver stem cells grown in culture: Therapeutic benefit demonstrated

Feb. 25, 2013 ? For decades scientists around the world have attempted to regenerate primary liver cells known as hepatocytes because of their numerous biomedical applications, including hepatitis research, drug metabolism and toxicity studies, as well as transplantation for cirrhosis and other chronic liver conditions. But no lab in the world has been successful in identifying and growing liver stem cells in culture -- using any available technique -- until now.

In the journal Nature, physician-scientists in the Pap? Family Pediatric Research Institute at Oregon Health & Science University Doernbecher Children's Hospital, Portland, Ore., along with investigators at the Hubrecht Institute for Developmental Biology and Stem Cell Research, Utrecht, Netherlands, describe a new method through which they were able to infinitely expand liver stem cells from a mouse in a dish.

"This study raises the hope that the human equivalent of these mouse liver stem cells can be grown in a similar way and efficiently converted into functional liver cells," said Markus Grompe, M.D., study co-author, director of the Pap? Family Pediatric Research Institute at OHSU Doernbecher Children's Hospital; and professor of pediatrics, and molecular and medical genetics in the OHSU School of Medicine.

In a previous Nature study, investigators at the Hubrecht Institute, led by Hans Clever, M.D, Ph.D., were the first to identify stem cells in the small intestine and colon by observing the expression of the adult stem cell marker Lgr5 and growth in response to a growth factor called Wnt. They also hypothesized that the unique expression pattern of Lgr5 could mark stem cells in other adult tissues, including the liver, an organ for which stem cell identification remained elusive.

In the current Nature study, Grompe and colleagues in the Pap? Family Pediatric Research Institute at OHSU Doernbecher used a modified version of the Clever method and discovered that Wnt-induced Lgr5 expression not only marks stem cell production in the liver, but it also defines a class of stem cells that become active when the liver is damaged.

The scientists were able to grow these liver stem cells exponentially in a dish -- an accomplishment never before achieved -- and then transplant them in a specially designed mouse model of liver disease, where they continued to grow and show a modest therapeutic effect.

"We were able to massively expand the liver cells and subsequently convert them to hepatocytes at a modest percentage. Going forward, we will enlist other growth factors and conditions to improve that percentage. Liver stem cell therapy for chronic liver disease in humans is coming," said Grompe.

Lyoto Machida pulls out split-decision win over Dan Henderson at UFC 157

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Lyoto Machida took a split decision over Dan Henderson in the co-main event at UFC 157 on Saturday. The judges saw it 29-28, 28-29, 29-28 for Machida.

Machida was elusive as usual in the first round, but Henderson was able to sneak in and land a few kicks and punches. At the end of the round, Machida took Henderson down with a leg trip and landed strikes.

The second round showed Machida still being elusive and keeping his distance from Henderson. Machida tried for a front kick several times, but couldn't land it. Meanwhile, Henderson couldn't land much.

[Also: Ronda Rousey survives UFC debut, wins via first-round arm bar]

Henderson is known for his big, overhand punches. Most of the time, when he throws it, it can mean the end of a fight. However, he had trouble getting close enough to Machida for the overhand to work.

In the third round, Machida moved in for a takedown but ended up with Henderson on top. Henderson used elbows from the top, but Machida was able to get out with less than two minutes left in the fight.

Before the fight, UFC president Dana White said that the winner of this bout will get the next title shot. UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones will put the title up against Chael Sonnen in April, but the next fight will likely go to Machida.

[Also: Josh Koscheck suffers upset loss]

Machida was once the UFC light heavyweight champion, but lost the title to Rua in 2010. Since then, he has wins over Randy Couture and Ryan Bader, but losses to current champion Jon Jones and Quinton Jackson. It will be his third chance at the light heavyweight title. He won it with a knockout of Rashad Evans in 2009, but lost to Jones in 2011.

Henderson had a long layoff between fights. His last bout was one of the best in MMA history. In November of 2011, Henderson defeated Mauricio Rua in a five-round decision. Since then, Henderson had a fight lined up with Jones in September, but had to pull out at the last minute because of a knee injury. His record falls to 29-9. He's 42 years old, and against Machida, looked slow and old for the first time in his career.

Powerball winners live modestly, give back to town

CAMDEN POINT, Missouri (Reuters) - Three months after winning half of the biggest Powerball lottery jackpot in U.S. history, Mark Hill still meets friends for morning coffee at a local convenience store.

And that Camaro sports car Hill considered buying with his winnings? He got a pick-up truck instead.

While some lottery winners fritter away their fortunes or meet tragic ends, not much has outwardly changed for Mark and Cindy Hill since they won half of a $587 million Powerball jackpot in November. They netted $136.5 million in a lump-sum payment after taxes.

"They are very conservative people," said Walt Stubbs, a friend and former high school classmate of the Hills. "They are doing some really nice things for the community and they've taken care of their family."

The Hills are giving money to civic projects in Mark Hill's hometown of Camden Point, Missouri, and still live in nearby Dearborn, Missouri, as they did before winning the jackpot.

The Hills will pay for a new Camden Point fire station and ball field and gave the town more than $50,000 to buy land for a new sewage treatment plant that will eventually allow residents to give up individual septic tanks, Mayor Kevin Boydston said.

"I've said all along that these lottery winnings could not have gone to a better couple," Boydston said. "They are giving back to the community, just like they said they would."

Camden Point has fewer than 500 residents and is wedged into hills in a rural area about 30 miles north of Kansas City. Its downtown has a series of mostly empty brick buildings.

Stubbs, chief of the area's volunteer fire department, said the new station is planned to connect directly to main roads, a major improvement on the current fire hall, which does not have quick access to highways.

"It's a situation where if we had to do it ourselves, it would take 25 years," Stubbs said.

The winning couple graduated from North Platte High School in Dearborn and have donated to a scholarship fund at that school.

The Hills, in their early 50s, told reporters at a news conference after winning the lottery they would stay in the area and give a lot of the money away. Mark Hill quit his job as a mechanic. Cindy Hill was out of work at the time.

"I'm real proud of them," said Shirley Hill, Mark Hill's mother. "They have stayed grounded. That's their nature."

WINNING CAN BE A BURDEN

History is replete with lottery winners whose lives have gone sour after becoming rich.

The National Endowment for Financial Education cites research estimating that 70 percent of people who suddenly receive a large sum of money will lose it within a few years.

In 2002, Jack Whittaker - already a millionaire - won $315 million in a lottery in West Virginia. Just four years later he claimed to be broke. Whittaker gave away millions of dollars, but people also stole hundreds of thousands of dollars from him and he lost a granddaughter to a drug overdose.

Last year, Urooj Khan died just two months after winning $1 million in the Illinois lottery, from what initially appeared to be natural causes. Toxicology tests run at a relative's request found cyanide poisoning. Police are now investigating his death as a homicide.

Maintaining a stable life such as the Hills are attempting is difficult, said Don McNay, author of "Life Lessons from the Lottery" who has studied winners of big money for 30 years.

"They are beyond exception," McNay said.

Most ordinary people who come into large sums of money become victims of their own lack of financial savvy or discipline, McNay said. People also come under great pressure from friends, relatives and a host of others wanting money.

Missouri Lottery spokeswoman Susan Goedde said the vast majority of lottery winners from the state were "doing great" and if they were good money managers before, they would be after.

"Circumstances may change, they may not work anymore and they have the freedom to travel," Goedde said. "But if they clipped coupons before winning the lottery, they will do it after winning."

Pinterest Addiction: Businesses Marketing

With over 1090 visitors per minute,?Pinterest has established itself as a viable social media tool?in a business marketer?s tool belt.

Not only are consumers spending their time on the site (upwards of 90 minutes per month), they are also?spending?more money?and at a higher frequency than they do on any of the other top five social media sites. It is clear that ?Pinterest addiction? has swept the planet.

Pinterest is a visual experience, allowing a business to connect with their community in an easy and efficient way. Through the power of graphics, a business can now spread their marketing message to a targeted and very eager consumer.?A consumer who feeds their Pinterest addiction in a consistent and enthusiastic way!

So why migrate your businesses over to Pinterest? Below are four reasons you should consider expanding your social sphere through a broader and more integrated marketing strategy.

1. Cost Effective

As the saying goes, ?time is money? and there is no better time saving solution than leveraging your businesses across multiple social channels.

With Pinterest, businesses can gain access to the very people they seek. Whether it?s a homebuyer or DIY design?aficionado,?Pinterest offers what a consumer needs, when they need it.

Pinterest can be a very cost-effective way to integrate online and offline and merge social with traditional marketing.

2. Simple and Straightforward

Many times, the simplest of things are the best things. The same goes with Pinterest as it has grown to become a?simple marketing solution for businesses.

The amount of members on the site is growing by the minute and does not appear to be slowing down anytime soon. This is a positive for businesses looking to tap into a targeted consumer that might not have been accessible in the past.

The appetite of today?s online social media generation has provided an endless abundance of marketing possibilities.

3. Integration With Other Social Media Platforms

Pinterest does not stand alone as a social media platform. It has deep connections with other social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter. This is great for businesses looking to hit ?two birds with one stone? and reach a vast majority of people in the shortest amount of time.

Pinterest has made it easy for businesses to pin up images and connect through various social media platforms. This connection has enabled a business to promote products in a variety of ways through images and words. Pinterest takes care of the images, while other networks including a blog take care of the words.?This makes for a perfect combination to advertise products and/or services at the same time.

4. Research and Data Mining

This is one of the overlooked advantages of Pinterest. The entire concept of the platform is to pin pictures that will engage and connect with the right consumer. Paying close attention to what consumers like, repin and share is an excellent way to to gain insight into what content they are craving.

Using tools such as?Pinfluencer?and?Pinreach, businesses can gauge what works and what doesn?t. What resonates with potential and even current consumers can be identified and strategies adjusted.

Concluding Thoughts

Pinterest has become an addiction for all types of businesses because it works if it is worked alongside an overall marketing strategy.

This is what matters in the end, as profit is the concluding goal for all businesses. Money in the bank equals success for any budding or established entrepreneur.

Florida fireballs renew calls for early warning system (+video)

Florida fireballs lit up the night sky Sunday. The fireballs (aka meteors) were seen by more than 60 people in Florida. Coming after the huge meteor in Russia, there are new calls for an early warning system to protect the Earth from giant meteors and asteroids.

By Staff,?CSMonitor.com / February 20, 2013

Fireballs (aka meteors) were seen by dozens of people in Florida Sunday.

A fireball, caused by a falling meteor, was seen by spectators from Miami to Jacksonville, Florida, Sunday evening.

' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

The streaking meteor was small compared to the one that hit Russia last week, but it was a bright light in the Florida sky ? and was captured on video.

?This one wasn?t grain-of-sand size, which what most of them are,? Thomas Webber, director of the Museum of Science and History?s Bryan-Gooding Planetarium told the Florida Times Union in Jacksonville. ?When we get something a little bigger, that maybe has a silicate coating that ablates off as it travels though the atmosphere and takes some of the heat with it, they can appear much brighter and last a lot longer.?

More than 60 people reported seeing the meteor on the American Meteor Society?s ?Fireball Log.?

They posted comments including, "I saw flames coming from it as it was falling and then it burned out. It was very distintive as a flaming, falling ball."

The Florida fireball, coming on the heels of the huge meteor that fell in Russia last week and an asteroid that buzzed past the Earth from a distance of just 17,200 miles, is raising awareness of how many objects fall to Earth each day.

The American Meteor Society notes that hundreds, if not thousands, of meteors fall to Earth daily. Most burn up in the atmosphere. But larger meteors, or asteroids, could pose a threat to life on Earth. Recent events have renewed calls for an early warning system, including a telescope in space dedicated to finding asteroids.?As The Christian Science Monitor reported recently:

"In their hunt to identify such near-Earth objects wider than half a mile across ? potential civilization busters if one were to strike Earth ? astronomers have cataloged about 95 percent of the objects in this size class during the past 15 years.

But they have found less than 1 percent of the objects 100 feet across or larger, a class that includes the asteroid 2012 DA14. This object flitted past Earth Friday afternoon Eastern Standard Time a scant 17,200 miles from Earth ? a record for a known object of its size."

On Friday, Lamar Alexander (R) of Tennessee and chairman of the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee, issued a statement regarding the two events that noted that the committee will hold hearings in the near future to explore ways to improve efforts to detect asteroids as well as to deal with any deemed a potential threat to the planet.

Discussing the recent asteroid flyby and the Russian meteor, Prof. Michio Kaku of City College of New York, told CBS News: "This could be a game changer," in terms of getting government support for better tracking of these objects. "We need an insurance policy. Inevitably, we're going to get hit with a big one. Look at the moon: it's pockmarked ... so we need to have an early warning system."

Twitter's shortened links a little longer now

Twitter users will soon find they have less room than usual to spell out how they're feeling and include a link, as a slight tweak to the social network's link-shortening service reduces the number of characters you can use to as few as 117.

It's a small change, but every character counts in the hyper-condensed messages Twitter is used for. So why the change?

Tweets are limited to 140 characters to begin with, which allowed them originally to be sent within the 160-character limit for texts (the remaining 20 characters were used for system purposes). You can still use all 140 if you're just writing text, but if you like to add links to your tweets, that'll cost you two extra characters.

Twitter's built-in link-shortener, t.co, currently uses 20 characters per link (for example, "http://t.co/pGYmGHu7"), or 21 with https:// links. But they're lengthening it to a maximum of 22 or 23 characters, meaning if you're pasting a link in your tweet, you'll have just 117 left to work with.

Why do they need more space? It's not clear. The original 8-character sequence in t.co links has trillions of combinations of letters and numbers, meaning they can't be running out. NBC News contacted Twitter for an explanation of the character cut, and we will update this post if the company responds.

The update appears to have already gone out, so users should notice the change immediately. Developers were warned of the update back in December, so apps and services should continue to work as normal.

Devin Coldewey is a contributing writer for NBC News Digital. His personal website is coldewey.cc.

Marriage Equality Activists 'Have Never Been More Hopeful'

A number of wins these past few weeks for proponents of same-sex marriage have fueled an unprecedented level of optimism, said Stuart Gaffney, a board member of Marriage Equality USA.

With a marriage bill passing the Illinois Senate, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta's step forward on extending benefits to same-sex military spouses, the president's renewed support for their movement and two pivotal Supreme Court cases pending, Gaffney said supporters "have never been more hopeful."

"We are really hoping that this year will be the greatest year ever for the freedom to marry in the United States," Gaffney told ABC News Friday. "There's so many historic firsts that have been happening, day after day."

Here is a look at what steps forward - and back - proponents of same-sex marriage have taken this week:

President Obama's SOTU Shout-Out to Same-Sex Couples

President Obama gave a brief but noteworthy mention to same-sex couples in his State of the Union address Tuesday night.

"It is our unfinished task to restore the basic bargain that built this country - the idea that if you work hard and meet your responsibilities, you can get ahead no matter where you come from, what you look like or who you love," the president told members of Congress and their guests in Statuary Hall.

That small shout-out was a step back from the level of support he showed in his inaugural address. Obama directly compared the gay rights struggle to such civil rights movements as the women's movement and the fight for racial equality during his swearing-in ceremony.

That speech was considered historic because it was the first time a president included the issue of gay rights in an inaugural address.

Panetta Adds to List of Benefits Available to Same-Sex Military Spouses

While it wasn't a full approval of what activists were asking for, an announcement this week by Panetta significantly increased the resources available to military members' same-sex spouses.

Panetta added 22 new benefits - including access to child care - to the list of those extended to same-sex partners.

The Defense of Marriage Act, which defines marriage as being between one man and one woman and is up for consideration by the Supreme Court this year, precludes same-sex military spouses from receiving many of the additional benefits for which advocates have asked.

One of the unmet demands was burial at Arlington National Cemetery, but a decision from the Veterans' Affairs bureau Thursday could signal changing attitudes towards that policy.

VA Secretary Eric Shinseki decided to allow retired Lt. Col. Linda Campbell to bury the ashes of her wife in a national military cemetery Friday.

Illinois Senate Approves Gay Marriage Bill

In what the Chicago Tribune called a " Valentine's Day victory," the Illinois Senate voted to legalize marriage for same-sex couples Thursday.

If the legislation passes in the House and is signed by Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn, it would make Illinois the 10th state to allow same-sex marriage. But it would not allow residents of Illinois who marry under the law to receive federal benefits, like those available under the Family and Medical Leave Act.

Senators Encourage Obama to End Workplace Discrimination

Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., led a group of 37 senators in sending a letter to President Obama on Valentine's Day, asking him to sign an executive order to protect GLBT workers from discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, the Washington Post reported.

According to the White House website, President Obama believes workplace protection "should be expanded to include sexual orientation and gender identity."

Woman in Army National Guard Seeking Benefits for Spouse Dies

Jeanne Shaheen took to the Senate floor Thursday to tell the story of Charlie Morgan, a New Hampshire woman in the Army National Guard who died of breast cancer Sunday after fighting to get benefits for her wife and their 4-year-old daughter, according to The Associated Press.

Sen. Shaheen, D-N.H., posted a video of her floor speech on Twitter and YouTube.

Morgan's wife, Karen, spoke of hope for marriage equality at her funeral in Portsmouth, N.H.

""I'll be on the courthouse steps with your picture when DOMA goes down," she said, according to the Seacoast Online. "I'll see you there. It's a date."

Shaheen introduced a bill with Sen. Kristen Gillibrand, D-N.Y., in Charlie Morgan's name that would require DOD to recognize same-sex marriages performed in states like New Hampshire where such practices are legal.

Sebi and real estate investors trapped in Sahara mess | Firstpost

The latest action by market regulator Sebi to attach the assets of two Sahara group companies has frozen a large number of real estate projects.

Sahara?s real estate assets were disclosed in an affidavit to the Supreme Court in January 2012 to prove that the group was capable of repaying bondholders in the two companies. The assets have, however, remained on Sahara?s books even though the group claims it has paid off most of its investors as at the end of November 2012.

But Sebi is out to recover nearly Rs 24,000 crore and the frozen real estate assets are probably the best way of doing so. The only problem: many of the properties attached by Sebi have already been pledged as securities with banks and financial institutions, to raise more funds, according to this Times of India report.

In other words, Sebi cannot just sell the group?s real estate assets to recover the money since several third party interests are involved.

d

The market value of Sahara-owned Aamby Valley, a private hill station between Mumbai and Pune, is said to be valued at Rs 40,461 crore.

Sahara is one of the top real estate owners in the country, almost at par with DLF, as it owns close to 27,000 acres of land in the country. The market value of Sahara-owned Aamby Valley,? a private hill station between Mumbai and Pune, is said to be valued at Rs 40,461 crore. And let?s not forget the sweeping 186 acres in Gurgaon, the development rights for which are held by various Sahara group entities. While the market value is not disclosed,? Sahara had paid Rs 1,436 crore to buy this land to be developed as commercial space and residential apartments, including group housing, branded villas, luxury apartments, club and hotels.

The Sebi order of Wednesday has attached between 90 to 95 percent of Sahara projects in 64 towns across India, mostly under the name Sahara City Homes. The development rights in these projects were purchased by various Sahara companies for Rs 1,105 crore, the order points out.

Even though the there is no end to the number of real estate projects the Sahara group has a stake in, it is still not clear? how many of these real estate assets are owned by the group and how many by the two companies that have been asked to refund OFCD money to investors.

Sebi is surely going to have a tough time going through the several shell companies through which the group has routed money to invest in the real estate sector. Pledged properties will only make the matter longer to resolve since it implies litigation which could go on for years.

Since real estate is unregulated, lacks transparency and is the safest haven for black money, Sebi?s job of recovering its dues has just got tougher, especially since the value of these properties is not known.

The real estate investor trap

Apart from doubts over the recovery of funds, it is the middle-class investor who stands to lose since they may have invested in some Sahara projects.

The investor who was earlier? caught between delayed projects, blocked investment, legal hurdles and economic escalation, may now not ever see the competition of the projects since Sebi has attached properties. According to another TOI report, Sahara sold a number of projects in cities like Bangalore, Chennai and Mohali. Customers who invested in these projects are going to be adversely impacted.

What?s worse is that since? Sebi has to sell real estate assets to repay bondholders, the investor money is bound to get stuck in this housing imbroglio. Refund of invested money will take time and the whole approval process can take years, making it more difficult for investors to get their money back.

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - South African "Blade Runner" Oscar Pistorius, a double amputee who became one of the biggest names in world athletics, was charged on Thursday with shooting dead his girlfriend at his upscale home in Pretoria.

Police said they opened a murder case after a 30-year-old woman was found dead at the Paralympic and Olympic star's house in the Silverlakes gated complex on the capital's outskirts.

Pistorius, 26, and his girlfriend, model Reeva Steenkamp, had been the only people in the house at the time of the shooting, police brigadier Denise Beukes told reporters, adding witnesses had been interviewed about the early morning incident.

"We are talking about neighbors and people that heard things earlier in the evening and when the shooting took place," Beukes said outside the heavily guarded residential complex.

Police said a 9mm pistol had been found at the scene.

Beukes said police were aware of previous incidents at the Pistorius house. "I can confirm that there has previously been incidents at the home of Mr Oscar Pistorious, of allegations of a domestic nature," she said.

Pistorius, who uses carbon fiber prosthetic blades to run, is due to appear in a Pretoria court on Friday.

"He is doing well but very emotional," his lawyer Kenny Oldwage told SABC TV, but gave no further comment.

A sports icon for triumphing over disability to compete with able-bodied athletes at the Olympics, his sponsorship deals, including one with sports apparel group Nike, are thought to be worth $2 million a year.

South Africa's M-Net cable TV channel said it was pulling adverts featuring Pistorius off air immediately after blanket coverage of the arrest in a country more used to honoring Pistorius as a national hero.

"WE ARE ALL DEVASTATED"

Steenkamp's colleagues in the modeling world were distraught. "We are all devastated. Her family is in shock," her agent, Sarita Tomlinson, tearfully told Reuters. "They did have a good relationship. Nobody actually knows what happened."

Pistorius, who was born without a fibula in both legs, was the first double amputee to run in the Olympics and reached the 400-metre semi-finals in London 2012.

In last year's Paralympics he suffered his first loss over 200 meters in nine years. After the race he questioned the legitimacy of Brazilian winner Alan Oliveira's prosthetic blades, though he was quick to express regret for the comments.

South Africa has some of the world's highest rates of violent crime, and many home owners have weapons to defend themselves against intruders, although Pistorius's complex is surrounded by a three-meter high wall and electric fence.

In 2004, Springbok rugby player Rudi Visagie shot dead his 19-year-old daughter after he mistakenly thought she was a robber trying to steal his car in the middle of the night.

Before the murder charge was announced, Johannesburg's Talk Radio 702 said the athlete may have mistaken Steenkamp for a burglar.

Pistorius was arrested in 2009 for assault after slamming a door on a woman and spent a night in police custody. Family and friends said it was just an accident and charges were dropped.

OLYMPIAN UNDERGOES POLICE TESTS

Steenkamp, a regular on the South African social scene, was reported to have been dating Pistorius for several months.

In the social pages of last weekend's Sunday Independent she described him as having "impeccable" taste. "His gifts are always thoughtful," she was quoted as saying.

Some of her last Twitter postings indicated she was looking forward to Valentine's Day on Thursday. "What do you have up your sleeve for your love tomorrow???" she posted.

Pistorius was on Thursday being processed through the police system. "At this stage he is on his way to a district surgeon for medical examination," the police brigadier said.

"When a person has been accused of a crime like murder they look at things like testing under the finger nails, taking a blood alcohol sample and all kinds of other test that are done. They are standard medical tests," Beukes said.

Pistorius is also sponsored by British telecoms firm BT, sunglasses maker Oakley and French designer Thierry Mugler.

"We are shocked by this terrible, tragic news. We await the outcome of the South African police investigation," a BT spokeswoman said before Pistorius was charged.

A Nike spokesman in London said before hearing of the murder charge that the company was "saddened by the news, but we have no further comment to make at this stage".

Pistorius also has a sponsorship deal with Icelandic prosthetics manufacturer Ossur.

"I can only say that our thoughts and prayers are with Oscar and the families involved in the tragedy," Ossur CEO Jon Sigurdsson told Reuters. "It is completely premature to discuss or speculate on our business relationship with him."

Neighbors expressed shock at the arrest of a "good guy".

"It is difficult to imagine an intruder entering this community, but we live in a country where intruders can get in wherever they want to," said one Silverlakes resident, who did not want to be named.

"Oscar is a good guy, an upstanding neighbor, and if he is innocent I feel for this guy deeply," he said.
