Germany says Iran sorry for attack on UK embassy (AP)

BERLIN ? German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle says Iranian foreign minister has expressed regret about the storming of Britain's embassy in Tehran by demonstrators.

The ministry said Sunday that Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi said he "was deeply sorry for what has happened" and vowed "to do everything to prevent such an incident from happening again."

The ministers were holding bilateral talks in Bonn ahead of a global conference on Afghanistan's future starting Monday.

The statement says Westerwelle stressed that an attack on one of the European Union's diplomatic missions "is perceived as being directed against the missions of all EU member states."

It says Westerwelle has also urged Iran to cooperate with the international community to shed light on its controversial nuclear program.

Parker Tatro: Learning So Much (But Not At College)

Ever since I moved to New York City to pursue my hopes and dreams, a lot of them have actually been coming true. In fact, the things that I thought I wouldn't be able to experience until after I had gone through years of school are happening within my first months of moving to the city. I think the most important thing to keep in mind when chasing after a dream is to work hard and never give up. Optimism is also beyond rewarding. One of the first things that I do when I meet someone is ask them what their dream job is, because I want them to think about it and then I want to know what they are doing to head in that direction. I don't think that any dream is too big or far-fetched to reach.

Also, the direction that I saw myself going in life is changing. The one thing that I am learning more and more about every day is myself. Photography is something that I have been passionate about for years now, but the more that I witness and see in the world makes me find new loves and passions. I do not think that is such a bad thing either. The reason that moving away from home was so important to me, was so that I could get away and figure out what I am supposed to spend the rest of my life doing. Of course I will always be making art and making photographs, but maybe there is something else out there that I could be even better at, or have more fun doing.

I have classes on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, and I decided to not waste those four days that I am free every weekend. I started emailing people from every end of the spectrum, from photographers to magazine editors. I actually got tons of emails back from people looking for interns, but there was one of them that stood out from the rest. I took an internship at Cond? Nast International, and loving every second of it.

Cond? Nast is the publishing company that owns the most influential magazines in the media industry. They own Vogue, W, Vanity Fair, Details, Glamour, GQ, The New Yorker, and so many more of the top magazines in the world. Currently I am an International Fashion Intern in their international offices on Third Avenue. Since I started working there about a month ago, I have helped on shoots for GQ Russia, Vogue Japan, and Vogue Italia. I have met some of the coolest photographers in the world, and helped dress some of the top male and female models from around the globe. My boss is also one of the coolest, most laidback people I know. Among the millions of other things that I have learned from him since getting the internship is how fun life can be. His energy is so laidback and he makes everyone feel comfortable. That is probably how he got so far in the industry at such a young age. Working for someone that you respect but also feel relaxed around is such a blessing. I cannot say that you would be able to be picky about who your boss is, but it makes so much of a difference when they are as cool as my boss is.

Success in this industry is all about the people you and the contacts that you make. That is why every person that you meet is so consequential. There are so many talented, fun, and interesting people in this city. The fact that I get to meet them and learn more about where they came from and where they are going is so extraordinary.

New York City has been casually called the "city of dreams," but maybe that title is more accurate than people imagine. For me, this is the place to come and make the things happen that you are passionate about doing. This is the place that I have been able to take the things that I have always wanted to do, and make them a reality. Maybe I could have done it anywhere, but the opportunities here made it accessible immediately. The things that you are passionate about are most likely different than the things that I am. Go where you need to go for your specific aspirations. No matter what people say, or how far out of your comfort zone it may be, you are the one that has to pave your path to your life. Another thing that you have be willing to accept is that it's not your school's fault if you aren't learning everything that you thought you would be learning. It is up to you to give yourself an education, even if it doesn't come from "school."

One of my favorite quotes is from Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe. He once said, "Seize this very minute; What you can do or dream you can, begin it; Boldness has genius, power and magic in it." The sheer fact of you believing in yourself, and actually making the moves necessary to achieve your aspirations, can take you a long way. Actually, it can take you all the way.

"Twilight" film shines again with 3rd box office win (omg!)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The newest "Twilight" vampire movie ruled the domestic box office for a third time with $16.9 million in ticket sales over one of the slowest movie-going weekends of the year, studio estimates released on Sunday showed.

"The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn: Part 1" from independent studio Summit Entertainment beat a pack of family films at U.S. and Canadian theaters. The fourth and second-to-last film in one of Hollywood's most lucrative franchises added $40.2 million at international locations.

After three weekends in theaters, "Breaking Dawn" has soaked up $588.3 million in global ticket sales.

The "Twilight" movies are based on best-selling novels by Stephenie Meyer about a human-vampire-werewolf love triangle.

The third domestic win in a row for "Breaking Dawn" came during the post-Thanksgiving weekend, typically one of the bleakest of the year at movie theaters following big releases a week earlier.

This year, total U.S. and Canadian ticket sales rang up at an estimated $82 million for the weekend, making it the year's second slowest, according to Hollywood.com Box Office. Overall sales only slightly edged the $81.5 million take from the September 9 weekend that followed Labor Day.

With no new films released nationwide, sales also slumped 4.8 percent below the same weekend last year.

After "Breaking Dawn," the rest of the weekend's top five belonged to family fare.

Disney's "The Muppets" starring Jason Segel and Amy Adams alongside Kermit, Miss Piggy and their puppet friends, rang up $11.2 million at North American (U.S. and Canadian) theaters. The movie represents a comeback for the Muppet characters, last seen in movie theaters in 1999. Worldwide sales for the new film have reached $60.1 million through Sunday.

"Hugo," a 3D family movie about an orphaned boy who lives in a 1930s Paris train station, moved up to third place from its fifth place finish last weekend after expanding to more theaters. The film pulled in $7.6 million domestically, bringing its total after two weekends to $25.2 million.

Animated 3D movie "Arthur Christmas," which explains how Santa delivers presents around the world in one night, pulled in $7.4 million domestically to finish in fourth place. To date, the movie has brought in $70.6 million worldwide.

In fifth place, dancing penguin sequel "Happy Feet Two" earned $6.0 million at domestic theaters. Total global sales reached $85.8 million after three weekends of release.

Walt Disney Co released "The Muppets." Privately held Summit Entertainment released "Breaking Dawn - Part 1." "Arthur Christmas" was distributed by Sony, and Hugo was released by Paramount, a unit of Viacom Inc.. Time Warner unit Warner Bros. distributed "Happy Feet Two."

Will Windows 8 for ARM tablets cut the cord on desktop mode?

Is it us, or is the dream of a full Windows experience on low-power ARM tablets getting steadily eroded? We've long known that these slates would sacrifice backwards compatibility with legacy software, but now it seems the familiar desktop mode could be getting the chop too. Paul Thurrott from SuperSite for Windows says he has good insider information that this mode will be limited to x86 devices, which would rule out using the traditional keyboard-and-mouse UI on an ARM tablet and force users to stick with the Metro UI at all times. By the sound of it, though, the matter is still being argued over within Microsoft and it's unclear whether the decision will apply to ARM-based notebooks too. All Thurrott could be sure of is that "the people who don't want there to be a desktop mode [in ARM tablets] have apparently won the day." Man, and just when we thought everyone was starting to get along so nicely.

Penn State officials say applications up despite scandal (Reuters)

STATE COLLEGE, Pa (Reuters) ? Penn State officials on Wednesday said applications to attend the university that has been rocked by a sex abuse scandal are ahead of last year and reassured students worried about the school's reputation.

"Prospective students are saying, 'I really want to come to Penn State. I understand this isn't something that represents the whole university,'" Penn State President Rodney Ericksontold more than 400 students in a packed university auditorium who gathered for an evening question and answer session.

Of the 40,000 undergraduate applications received, only eight have withdrawn their applications, Erickson said, adding that applications are about 4 percent ahead of "last year's record rate."

Student questions were polite but often anxious following the shock news on November 5 that Jerry Sandusky, longtime former assistant to legendary Penn State football coach Joe Paterno, had been charged with sexually abusing eight boys over more than a decade.

The allegations forced the firing of Paterno and dismissal of university President Graham Spanier. Athletic Director Tim Curley and finance official Gary Schultz were also charged with perjury by the grand jury, with investigations continuing.

Paterno has not been charged and lawyers for all three accused have said they are innocent of the charges.

On Wednesday none of the students, who were joined by students watching via satellite at Penn State's many branch campuses, mentioned Sandusky, Curley or Schultz by name.

One student asked if there was a "rush to judgment" by the Penn State Board of Administrators in firing Paterno, while another student asked if the school was planning to take down the bronze Paterno statue outside of Beaver Stadium and to rename the library that now bears his name.

Erickson simply said "no" when a student asked if the university was bullied by national media into firing Paterno. There were no plans to remove the statue or change the library name, he said.

But students wondered how the scandal might affect tuition next school year and some worried that state lawmakers would punish Penn State by slashing its state aid.

"A lot of us are worried how the scandal is going to affect us after graduation," one student, a junior, asked Erickson and the seven other school administrators who joined him to answer questions during the two-hour forum.

Damon Sims, Penn State's vice president for student affairs, said students "don't have to worry about that" because many of the school's alumni are "re-emphasizing their commitment" for new graduates.

"Alumni want to open doors for you," Commonwealth Campuses Vice President Madlyn Hanes said. "Employers are still very, very interested in our students. I hope you have solace with that," she said.

"Perhaps this experience will make you a better person; a better employee," said Terrell Jones, PSU's vice provost for educational equity.

Henry Foley, Penn State's dean of graduate school, said the immediate task at hand for the university is to regain student trust and prepare them for the end of the fall semester.

"None of you are guilty," Foley told the students. "You may feel shame, but none of you are guilty of anything."

New Samsung chip has two of everything: two cores, 2GHz, 2560 x 1600 graphics

Sammy's current Cortex A9-based chips are hardly slackers -- the Galaxy Note already proved that to any lingering doubters. Nevertheless, the next-gen Exynos 5250 SoC promises to double that sort of performance, by harnessing two Cortex-A15 chips clocked at 2GHz each, along with a GPU that can output resolutions of up to 2560 x 1600 (WQXGA). It's like big.LITTLE computing, except without the LITTLE. Samsung reckons it'll start mass producing the 5250 for use in high-end tablets by the second quarter of next year, which should be just in time to stop NVIDIA from getting too cocky.
