Dubai, UAE; April 8, 2012: The fifth Gulf Film Festival, commencing from April 10, 2012, at venues in Dubai Festival City, has opened registration for its free industry workshops for students and film professionals.? A two-series workshop on ?The Content Business? and a session on ?Sound & Colour Grading? are being held at the festival led by film industry professionals including Norman B. Schwartz, the first ADR editor to be admitted to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Majid Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Culture & Arts Authority (Dubai Culture), the fifth edition of GFF will be held until April 16 in Dubai, and from April 12 to 14 at the Abu Dhabi Theatre on the corniche. All screenings are free for the public. In all, 155 films from 40 countries are being screened at GFF.
Conducted by TwoFour54, the workshop on ?The Content Business? will be led by Angus Finney, an international film industry specialist who has personally trained more than 300 film producers and entertainment executives since 2005. He is also the manager of Europe?s only annual Production Finance Market hosted by Film London.
?The Content Business? includes two sessions: Production Management and Creative Management in the Film Business. The two-hour workshop on Production Management is designed to examine the key roles during the pre-production and post-production phases in film, television and cross-platform digital products. It will discuss budgets, planning and working with line producers, and is aimed at film, television and web-content producers, creative talent including upcoming writers and directors, and companies working in the writing/creative media space.
The workshop on Creative Management in the Film Business is aimed particularly at mid-level and junior executives, freelance/independent producers and other creative artists. The topics to be discussed include various aspects of the entertainment value chain, film and television development from a management perspective, the creative process of packaging a project, and leading and managing creative tasks from marketing to talent.
New York Film Academy is spearheading the workshop on Sound & Colour Grading, which will be led by Norman B. Schwartz, a retired sound editor and Automated Dialogue Replacement (ADR) director, who currently teaches acting, directing and writing for the New York Film Academy schools in Abu Dhabi, Nigeria, Hungary, France, Spain and Italy.? The contributor to two Oscar winning soundtracks and author of ?Hollywood: Below and Beyond,? Schwartz will be joined by John Kochanczyk, teacher of sound design at New York Film Academy, Abu Dhabi; and Dan Mitre, the head of the video department at Mile Studios, Dubai.
Aimed at filmmakers, editors, sound engineers, visualisers, cinematographers and students who are aspiring for a career in films, the workshop will discuss the art of sound and colour grading using the short film Picnic by Jake Trevakis.

GFF 2012 films are being screened in the in-competition segments - Official Gulf Features & Shorts, Official Gulf Student Shorts and International Shorts - as well as in the festival?s out-of-competition segments: Lights that present diverse perspectives in film-making from around the Arab world; Intersections, a showcase of international films distinguished by their subject matter and narrative approach; Films for Children; Cherries of Kiarostami, a collection of 39 films developed following a master-class led by the veteran filmmaker; and a showcase of avant-garde filmmaker Gerard Courant. Nightly industry discussions and other special events will also be held as part of the week-long festival.
GFF 2012 will be held at the InterContinental Hotel, Crowne Plaza and Grand Festival Cinemas at Dubai Festival City; and from April 12 to 14 at the Abu Dhabi Theatre.
