Law students today have significantly more technology at their disposal than law students of just 10 years ago. While this may seem a bit overwhelming on the surface, it can help these students become better organized and more efficient as they move through law school and beyond. Here are some ways in which law students are making use of high tech in their careers.

Using the Law Library

Many law schools have impressive computer setups, such as law library computer labs that can take up entire classrooms. These law libraries have dozens and dozens of computers that don?t only have a connection to the Internet, but also to the school?s own reference materials and texts. Naturally, this provides law students with a powerful and efficient way to get information right at their fingertips.

Using the Law School?s LAN

LAN is an acronym that stands for local area network. Many law schools offer their law students access to this local area network, which comes complete with a series of goodies that students can use in their legal-study careers. For instance, LANs will afford students access to personal file storage space, email accounts, learning tools and legal research applications such as Lexis Nexis legal software. These personal storage spaces are private and can only be reached via a student?s username and password.

Using Social Media Counts, Too

Believe it or not, social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook?which some see as a recreational use of time rather than a professional one?are becoming increasingly popular among those in the legal profession. In fact, both experts and law professors are now advising their law students to embrace the social media world in spite of its somewhat non-serious reputation. Based on an American Bar Association report from 2012, more law firms and lawyers now use social media sites like Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook.

These are just some of the ways in which law students are today using high tech to advance their budding law careers. Much has changed in the high tech landscape in just the last 10 years, especially with the rise of social media sites that can now also be used for professional networking. Law students who become adept and comfortable with high tech will enjoy more successful careers.
