OPINION ? EVERYTHING was set up for the Cleveland Indians Friday night. They were home to rival Detroit with the weekend series to determine the leader in the American League Central Division.
The stadium was packed with Indians fans ready to celebrate the return of the team to playoff contention. Instead, the Tribe so-called ace Justin Masterson collapsed, the hitting was nonexistent and the Indians were clobbered, 7-0.
As I watched the disgusting display on TV, only one thought came to mind: ?Not ready for prime time!?
It marked the 6th straight loss for the Indians to Detroit which doesn?t bode well if you want to win the division. And it followed on the back of a loss to Kansas City where the Tribe blew a 5-0 lead.
Is the season over? No. But some games certainly define a season and that was one of them. Masterson can pitch well against weaker teams and win 1-0 ballgames. But in the big games he has never proven that he can be a winner or team leader.
The key to every major league team is pitching and Detroit has much better starting pitching than Cleveland. Therefore it will be interesting to see if the Tribe is willing to spend money or make some moves before the trade deadline in a few weeks.
If not, Indians fans won?t be saying, ?Not ready for prime time!? They will be reiterating a common phrase for Cleveland fans concerning their favorite teams: ?Wait until next year!?
? One team that may be ready for prime time is the Cleveland Browns. They made some strong moves in the offseason. But the plight of the Browns, who haven?t won an NFL championships since 1964, was made clear on the SyFy Channel show ?Warehouse 13?.
Although it?s a bit embarrassing, it is funny.
One of the stars of the show is Eddie McClintock, a former wrestler at North Canton (Ohio) High School. During a recent show a woman said she was tired of immortality and wanted to be normal. McClintock?s character Pete Lattimer responded: ?Who wouldn?t want to be immortal? You might even live long enough to see the Browns win a Super Bowl.?
? Speaking of the Cleveland Browns, several former Browns will be here Friday for the Cleveland Browns NFL Alumni Golf Scramble at Tam O?Shanter Golf Course.
The event benefits the Marvel E. Flint Scholarship Fund and is organized by Judson Flint, former Farrell High star and standout defensive back for Cleveland.
Each foursome will be paired with a Browns? alum. A lot of great stars like Greg Pruitt, Hanford Dixon and others have been here in the past to join Judson.
