Archon (Sci-Fi Interest Check)

So this is an idea I've been working on for a long time now, about 2 years actually. I've written stories based off it, and think it could do well as an RP. It's really inspired by series like Battlestar Galactica, Firefly, and Star Trek.

The year is 2505 AD, and the galaxy is at war. The Earth Core Systems has formed an alliance, the Orion Federation, with several other star systems (which are inhabited by diverse intelligent life forms). Meanwhile, a rival group of rather destructive systems, including a separately developed group of humans, have formed their own alliance, the Terisian Alliance. Both sides are locked in conflict, fighting for control of the Milky Way.
Here's the catch: millenia ago, before the Earth humans could even imagine space travel, the galaxy was in a much more brutal and devastating war. Both of the ancient sides, the Anaris and the Vetanari, were hyper-advanced and extremely powerful, possessing weapons that could destroy the galaxy a dozen times over; only the Vetanari were willing to use them to accomplish their goal of subjugating the galaxy. To preserve the galaxy, the Anaris sacrificed much to develop a weapon know as the "archon", which they used to defeat the Vetanari and banish the survivors from the galaxy, Of course, these tales passed into legend.
Now, with the galactic war producing no end, leaders on both sides are turning back to the legends, in hopes of finding technology to win the war. Captain James Smith has never believed such legends, but perhaps he will need to in order to succeed.

It'd be fairly open ended, I have a general direction but nothing specific, and I'm more than open to other ideas and directions. Players would create characters that exist in the Captain's fleet. They wouldn't be limited to simply military-type roles. The fleet is small, but there is certainly room for civilians with good purpose. Of course, antagonist roles are also needed; spies, dissenters, mutineers, etc.

What are your thoughts? Does this sound like something that could work?
