David Hanscom and I recently filmed a 1 hour video on Neworld Web about the ?12 Barriers to Self Development?.? The article below is an overview of that show.? Click Here to view the video!?
12 Barriers to Self Development?
?He who controls others may be powerful, but he who has mastered himself is mightier still.?
~Lao-tzu
Barrier #1 ~ Ignorance
Self-Development is essentially impossible if one is not willing to devote the time to understanding the nature of the mind
Barrier #2 ~ Habit Formation
We tend to get ?stuck? in set behaviours and patterns of thought that do not support our pursuit of worldly success or self-development.
Barrier #3 ~ Destructive Personality Traits
Personality traits are fixed at a young age.? Since most leaders aren?t on a rigorous program of self-discovery, they exhibit the same traits throughout their life.
If you are strong on self-esteem and self-improvement, you will have great self-development.? Self-destruction, self-indulgence and self-pity will have the opposite effect.
Barrier #4 ~ Ego Defense Mechanisms
Typically manifested as fear, guilt, anger, embarrassment, frustration, etc.? Activated by the ?Little things? (a frown from a superior, criticism from the spouse, getting angry at the person who bumped into you etc)
When this barrier is ?activated?, the mind will not process it properly.
Barrier #5 ~ Negative Self-Talk
Thoughts have a great impact on the emotions, feelings or states of mind.? If you think in a negative manner then your outcome will be in direct correlation with that feeling.
Barrier #6 ~ Homeostatis
It?s hard to build new mental or behavioral habits? and very difficult to stop an old habit and substitute it with a new one. One-time bursts of motivation tend to produce little lasting effect.
We usually resist change because of the status quo (homeostasis).
Barrier #7 ~ Arrested Development
When Ego growth has stopped prematurely.
Example: A leader who cannot control their emotions, or an employer who blames others while failing to look at their own personal contribution to the problem.
Barrier #8 ~ Arrested Development Dissonance
(rationalizing irrational behaviour)
Commonly operates as an unconscious mechanism and is difficult to notice. It is associated with buyer?s remorse and purchasers regret when it comes to making important purchases.
Barrier #9 ~ Failure to be ?Aware?
The Ego sits in an isolation bubble of its own creation.? It acts like a king or queen in a throne room, blissfully unaware to what?s happening outside the castle.
Barrier #10 ~ Failure to master Negative Emotions and States of Mind
26% of people fail because they can?t accept feedback
23% of people fail because they?re unable to understand and manage their emotions
17% of people fail because they lack the necessary motivation to excel
15% of people fail because they have the wrong temperament for the task
11% of people fail because they lack the necessary technical skills to reach their goals.
Barrier #11 ~ Poor Attention
In some respects, listening is a terribly difficult thing to do because it requires a great deal of mental energy.? When attention is in sort supply we often miss key facts, concepts and principles.
Barrier #12 ~ Not Understanding our Dreams
Mainstream psychologists believe that dreams have important messages? hidden meanings that the Ego typically ignores
